Guys I know we are all caught up in the emotion of today but I seriously doubt we'll be seeing a field naming at Syracuse game. I would expect something more strategic if that were to occur like homecoming of next year after he recovers and possibly tied to gift. He is going to be staying on as a special advisor. In the press conference he says Julie has more facility ideas.

Frank retirement press conference:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJmBY5m4c-4

Solich is still working for the athletic department his contract though was set to expire at the conclusion of this season.

https://www.ohio.edu/news/2020/01/ohio-athletics-announce...

I suspect this was a decision by Frank to retire for a while a here. The press release was timed to be after the 4th of July. This could be something that was coming for 6 months and he decided he would complete spring ball first.

Frank says at towards the end of the press conference that he doesn't care too much about having the field named after him but he is arm-wrestling (negotiating) with Julie over possible facility gift.

My bet is no field naming but maybe a facility gift forthcoming at some point. Also he said a lot of work in Peden Tower was launched by friends from Nebraska so I wouldn't rule that out as a continuing factor in raising money.

I never knew this about Albin - As head coach at NAIA Northwest Oklahoma State, he improved their record in each of his three years, including a 13-0 national championship year in 1999.

Not only did Albin win a national championship in 1999, but many probably didn't know that from 2017-2019, the Bobcats offense was ranked 9th, 12th and 20th in the nation scoring. He was also named National RB Coach of the Year in 2018. This program is in good hands.

Now that my own heart has restarted, wish him nothing but the best in the years to come. He can truly take pride in what he's accomplished here, not just on the field but off as well. Not only has he helped mold some fantastic players, but nearly all are good, upstanding people. I hope he stays in Athens, but if he doesn't I hope he finds the place of his dreams.

T2 is an interesting hire. If he can get Rogers's completion percentage near his own 62%, we'll have a really dangerous pair of QBs, assuming Rourke heals up from last year's injury.

Guessing that Albin will call the offense from the sideline, at least for the first few games.

Coincidentally, Nebraska named a new AD today, it's fourth since joining the B10 in 2011.

As many have speculated before, the football field will probably be named after Coach Solich. I am not sure of the timing, but wouldn't discount it being done in the very near future. Coach Solich probably won't want all that attention, but is certainly well deserved.

I'm not trying to be condescending here, but the word tragic? Really? It sucks that its happening this close to the season and sucks even more that he's having a health issue. But its not exactly a tragedy. Everything will work itself out.

That's putting mildly.

The guy has a bad reputation, including cutting sports.

The wrestling boards are exploding over the hire.

They all say he has a history of mediocrity .

Frank was my grade school gym teacher at Omaha Holy Name, his first job out of college. It wasn't until some time later I realized he had been on the cover of Sports Illustrated the year before.

One of my biggest sports thrills was attending the 2000 Nebraska at Notre Dame game, nicknamed the "Husker Home Game" because there was so much red in the stands. Eventual Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch scored a touchdown in overtime to win it.

I also got to talk to Frank briefly after an Ohio game. Needless to say, I was shocked when he didn't remember who I was. ;-) But a nice chat nonetheless.

I was hoping Frank could finish with a normal season, but such is life. I hope he has a wonderful retirement.

Frank is a big time guy that never acts like one. Quiet confidence based on his accomplishments.
Before the Minnesota game a few years back he had breakfast with his family in the team hotel.
later as he walked by my table in the same restaurant wearing my Bobcat gear he stopped and thanked me for coming to the game.
I had the privilege of traveling with the team a few times to away games. First off the team would make us proud of their behavior on the plane and at the hotel. For most road games that I attended there would be a line of former players and teammates of 20-30 people to say hello early morning in the hotel lobby. He took the time to chat it up to one and all.
He is a very special person who would be the first to deny that he was anything special.

He was a massive douchebag when he was on ESPN before that as well. He was on with Mark May and Mark May wasn’t the bad guy. That’s hard to do

I was shocked to see this news cross the wire this morning. Did not know Frank was having health issues. I thank him for EVERYTHING. We have been so incredibly lucky to have him for the last decade plus. It won't be the same without him.

Thank you, Frank!

What a day at the Convo.....Wow!

In Coach Solich's press conference, he mentioned one of his favorite memories from the past 16 years came in his first season when Dion Byrum thanked him for "making the team feel like they were really a part of D1 college football". I've got to say, that completely encapsulates how us fans felt too! 😆

There’s a good newspaper column to be written about finding a place that may not be in the spotlight and building something sustainable and being content to teach others without the applause or scrutiny of the highest level.

I think most coaches see that as a lack of ambition. I’ll guess Frank Solich was more fulfilled in Athens than 95 percent of the rest of college football’s coaching fraternity. He never seemed to be part of the rat race.

I do wish the best for Coach Solich. I hope and pray he lives a long, healthy life and can enjoy watching successful Bobcat football seasons from one of his mentees.

It seems to me that there must have been some succession plan should something like what occured come to fruition. There are lots of schools of thoughts on this, but let's face it, financially we are not where we once were. Alums like us on this message board are not the typical alumnus, our views and passion don't reflect those of most students, let alone the faculty. I wish Coach Albin well, but what is to come with not only staff changes but student interest and administration support both vocal and financial, remains to be seen. In 2005 we kinda knew what was in the future, we can't say the same now.

I think we hit the perfect storm of a quality coach who knew that job offers would be scarce at age 60, tremendous support from the administration (at least in the early days and maybe later) for what he wanted to do, and a fan base that is highly appreciative of the progress made through the years, despite the frustration -- shared by the coaches and players -- that the ultimate goal hasn't been achieved. After what happened at Nebraska following a nine-win season, he was looking for some place that would appreciate at least being competitive in the conference year after year. There are few places in the "P" conferences, and really not a great percentage of G5 teams, where that happens. Ohio was, and still is, one. That's the sole advantage of being down so long prior to 2005. The one thing Athens didn't have that he wanted -- a major airport -- was something he grew to live without.

Few coaches who have been to the mountaintop would have that desire to put appreciation ahead of glory and big bucks. Bob Davie is one, I think. I got the impression Terry Bowden was using Akron as a stopover to get back to a "P" team. It takes a special kind of coach and a special set of circumstances.

I think signing Albin to a 4 year deal was smart. Makes for a smooth transition, Albin is a good coach, more than likely you won't lose some of the players they are already in on and 4 year deal is a good time to see if he cuts it or not while Tettleton is on staff to possibly take over one day 🤞🤞

I posted that before I watched the press conference. After watching the press conference it sounds like he's going to handle the heart problem like a chronic condition rather than require immediate surgery.

Given the nature of MAC football in this day and age where coaches are shuffled in and out of jobs, what is the likelihood that Frank's MAC wins record stands for a long time?

I'm guessing this one might never be broken, unless some school does the same thing Ohio did and gets an older coach just looking to stay in the game rather than move up the ladder.

Frank doesn't have the record, right? Isn't that held by Herb Deromedi?
