I have a hard time buying the whole, “anyone would have gone to Illinois for that money” – “family setup forever… blah blah blah”.

Anyone with an ounce of fiscal insight can make $325K work very well in Athens, Ohio. Coaches take these jobs because of ego and desire to be a Krzyzewski someday.

No question ego is there. They all think they will be successful at their next stop. But its more than that.

"Yes coach, we know you like Athens. And I'm sure you're financially smart enough to probably be set for life. With this contract, your assistants can be set for life. Your kids will be set for life. College - paid for. First house - paid for. Retirement - paid fo. Same can go for your grandkids - college, house, retirement. That's a nice legacy with a swipe of pen... isn't it. Oh and we know you are a great tournament coach. Much better chance to make the dance in the Big 10 than in the one-bid MAC."

And yes prestige, facilities and that next contract.

I've never faulted Groce for taking the job - he had to. I dislike him for taking the the Akron job. Shows Athens is not some special place in his heart - just a stop along the way.

How many MAC coaches that have grasped at the brass ring haven't landed safely even if they failed in doing so?

Groce - Akron
Christian - Us and BC
Heath - USF
McCallum - Detroit
Nee - Duquesne

I can't think offhand of other coaches that have left for bigger jobs other than Dakich's WVU disaster.

Thought of another one, Herb Sendek. He followed his stint at Miami with 10 years at NC State and 9 years at Arizona State (replaced by Bobby Hurley) and is currently in his 5th season at Santa Clara.

I didn't include TOS in this group because his brass ring wasn't money attached to a bigger job.

I 100% agree on Groce. I'd have taken the Illinois job, too.

Not to mention that we're a board full of Ohio alums, the vast majority of us posting from not Athens, Ohio, yet insisting that others should view the opportunity to live in Athens forever as one they can't turn down.

I loved by time in Athens. It's not the sort of town I would be interested in living in long-term.

My point wasn't that Athens is a magical place to everyone and Groce should have stayed. The point was that maybe more money from Ohio would not have made any difference in his decision.

I fear that Boals will also be lured away soon. Other than the Gonzaga-like schools it's nearly impossible to attract long-term successful coaches into our small market scene. We either settle into the young, hot coach carrousel or find a Solich type who is done with that.

Regardless, let's enjoy the ride. Go Bobcats.
Peace and be well, friends.

If the weather was better, I would love to live in Athens. And I did for a few years. I find it underrated to live in as a non-student.

You never know how it is with alumni. Sometimes money and "a step up" isn't that big of a lure when you're at your alma mater. Larry Hunter was here for 12 seasons and likely would've stayed longer if it had been up to him. I don't know what Boals's ambitions are, but I imagine he won't leave Ohio for just any old "P" school.

Yeah, I can see that. But for me personally, I value things larger cities offer quite a bit. Pre-Covid, I traveled a lot for both work and leisure, so access to a large international airport is important. I also like having pro sports nearby, particularly the NBA and MLB. Not to mention, a larger selection of restaurants that aren't mainly geared towards college palates/budgets.

Columbus is accessible enough that I felt I could go there for said big city stuff.

That said, I now live in one of the largest cities in the country.

Dennis Gates has got to be in the mix. Cleveland State is such a great story, he took over a mess.

From HoopDirt today:

Kevin Sutton is out as an assistant at URI. The veteran assistant had been on the Rams staff for the past three seasons, and has also had stops at Pitt, Georgetown, George Washington, James Madison and Old Dominion. The most interesting name that I’ve heard as a possible replacement here is former Boston College head coach Jim Christian (he played for Tom Penders at URI in the late 1980’s).
