Saul is who he is. He is a laid back personality. I look back at his introductory press conference and I feel like he was definitely putting on a show. He never reached that enthusiasm again. His in-game coaching style was laid back. His interviews were laid back. His relationships with his players appeared laid back just from the way he spoke of them and they spoke of him. He was a nice guy who was laid back. That may have worked in North Dakota and even in Wisconsin but at OU and the MAC and the Midwest, that just didn't cut it. He was laid back in regards to Twitter. He was laid back in regards to player development. It shows in the amount of guys who transferred and it showed in the energy we got in some of the games. I think that he's a nice guy who will find another head coaching job. But it better be somewhere that he can be laid back and relaxed in.

I'm curious - did you ever go to a practice or see him anywhere besides on TV or at a game in person to derive all of these thoughts? I didn't, other than one time randomly, but I think you're making grand assumptions about how laid back he is when it comes to being a competitive or driven person. Coaches don't get to be D1 head coaches if they aren't competitive, driven, and concerned about developing their players. He and his staff just didn't get the results. I think it's that simple.

Also, I think this "it didn't cut it in the MAC or Midwest" regarding his "laid back" personality is wrong. College basketball isn't terribly different regardless of the school's location. Winning and results is really what matters the most. How a coaching staff gets there doesn't matter nearly as much. His personality might not have worked for you personally, or others on here, but I doubt you'd be posting things like this if they'd just won 25 games or got to an NCAA tournament game in the last couple years.

It's absolutely ridiculous to believe that someone can't be laid back and successful as a coach in the midwest. It's almost like you forgot that Brad Stevens took Butler to back-to-back title games and now coaches in the NBA. A guy has a couple of losing seasons and all of a sudden everyone finds their psychology degrees.

There seems to be a lot of talking out of asses here. Did you already forget what Treg shared on here recently? Did you even read it? He made it clear that Saul and staff had a very frank discussion with him that wasn't exactly a hug fest. Seems he found the right tone to get the best out of his player when he needed it. Those of you that think press conference personality always equals locker room personality have never played sports above the elementary school level. This is not a commentary on the coaching change or me saying his personality fits every player. But let me spare you some suspense... Boals won't fit every player either. There will be transfers next year too. Try not to act too shocked.

In my humble opinion, Coach Boals offers an opportunity to recruit upper level MAC talent ala Buffalo, as well as an under the radar P5 talent. I also feel Saul's inability to ever change up defenses(using a zone etc), showed a lack of coaching ability. We had players regress from year to year, and free throw shooting was abysmal. That being said, I want our beloved alma mater to return to an exciting, fun, and talented brand of basketball. I think we'll get that with Jeff.

Accurate reply and you know it. It’s funny in some threads we’ve been told to move on and let go. However, Saul’s defenders keep popping up in the attempt to make rewrite history. This program was pretty much dead and now it has life.

I think we need to do a poll. Who do you love most Saul or Ohio Basketball?

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

Phillips' defensive philosophy of not using zones was because he's part of the Bo Ryan Wisconsin coaching tree. Guess if not using zones makes indicates a "lack of coaching ability", Bo Ryan "lacked coaching ability."

Follow a Dumbass response with a really pathetic follow up. Trending down are we? Or just ensuring we KNOW you are capable of incredible stupidity?

Considering the sources, are you really all that surprised by the responses in either case?

Lay off the saulcohol, stupidity is getting a mediocre coaches name tattooed on your arm and attacking anew coach who is a former Bobcat. The thread is about our future but yet you want to live in the past. Let’s move forward and chill with the insults.

Nobody is attacking the new coach. As far as I can tell all of us are excited about Coach Boals. Geez.

The stupididty is generally coming from a couple sources that like to use the words "saulcohol" or "saulcoholics" as though they are 15 year old boys.

Why are we still talking about Saul, OU Country wants me on a stake over an opinion. He said he was for the coaching change and now he is attacking anybody that suggested that Saul needed to go.

You're the one continuing down the "Saulcohol" path. Say stupid things, expect replies of this nature to happen. And take note, I'm not the only one using this tone with their replies. Is it really that hard to understand? Or have you forgotten about the Malik Zaire thread in the football forum?
