8 and 8, this is somewhat concerning to me.

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

The author was tweeting at the game last night and said he was making a difference everywhere but the scoring column last night. His teammate Kyle Matoszkia was picking up the slack. Great players make an impact even when not scoring. Sounds like he did that last night in a big spot.

Kyle is a 6'5" Forward too. Kinda wondering what he's gonna grow into as a player.

Also, FWIW, in the district final loss to the same team last year, Jason almost recorded a triple-double with 20 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocked shots. So, scoring isn't everything. He was the WHOLE team last year in that game.

Love reading this. Carter didn't score much but was effective in other areas. Sounds like a classic Saul kind of player.

Love the high/low action too. Would love to see some of that with passing big men at Ohio.

Finally had a chance to see Jason in person vs. a scrappy, tough DeSales team.

He appears to be an honest 6'7". He does have some muscle on him. He might add a few pounds as he matures but he doesn't need much. There is nothing awkward about him. Moves well and has agility. Excellent, I mean excellent jumping ability. Highlight of the game was his block under the basket of 6'8" Caden Sanchez' attempt to power a layup in high off the backboard.

Jason was obviously the best player on the floor. He's got all the skills. Can move well with/without the ball. Sees the court very well. Good passer. OK shooter right now. Can work it inside. Looks like he can create shots.

But...but...

Needs to be in the gym shooting free throws! I think he was something like 5-9. He does not dominate (or at least didn't last nite) the way someone with his skills should. Of course, a lot of that is dictated by what offense they're running, the defense they're facing, etc. The Johnnies aren't the NBA...they don't run sets where Jason gets the ball and everyone else clears out. I would have liked to have seen him a bit more active on the defensive boards.

In fact, he's one of those kids who you look at and say, "Gosh, he's really good, but it looks like he can be a lot better." He has a nice shot, but it can be better. He can rebound, but he can do more on the boards. He can shoot free throws better. Maybe develop an attitude of, OK fellas, follow me, I'm taking over this game. I'm being a bit tough here, and again it's based only on what I saw last nite.

His value was clear last nite. Johnnies were up about 4 with 6 mins to go in the third qtr when Jason picked up his third foul and went to the bench. I believe they were down 10 when he came back in at the start of the fourth. Note to coach: You needed to get him back in earlier and have faith that he could avoid fouling out. The game was pretty much decided by the time he came back.

Ended with either 19 or 21 points, 8-10 rebounds. Even with missing time with fouls, coulda been more...

Overall, Carter looks like the type of kid Saul loves. He's a darn good player right now, but if he works hard to improve/refine his skills I think he could develop into a first team all MAC player and maybe POY. The potential is definitely there.

Nice article and video on Carter who came up one assist shy of a triple-double last night.

Man I love this quote from Jason.

Johnstown has recently been on a 13-game winning streak and then he drops this:

"Obviously we have been good, but we could be a lot better," he said. "Our defense has really started to click, and we need to keep getting better on the offensive end. We have to keep this going."

Dude just wants to keep getting better. Love it.

Jason now holds the school record for points in a career.

was able to spend a few minutes talking to him last week. He is really humble and sincere. Good thoughts on continued development and goals. Locked in on the program and his role. Sounds like his pops spends a lot of time with him in skills development and motivation. I like the pick up even more. Looked about the same height as Gavin when they were standing together.

Johnstown-Monroe got the #2 seed in the upcoming OHSAA tournament. Their first matchup is against Sparta Highland on 2/22 in their home gym. Future sites TBD.

According to this it looks like they were almost slated to be playing in the Athens District of the tournament. That would have been a dream come true for Jason and Ohio.

Okay, color me confused. How is Johnstown-Monroe the #2 seed yet the #13 seed Granville gets the bye?

Not all teams desire a bye. Our girls team is ranked #1 in the state in D4, is the #1 seed and chose not to take a bye. The coach likes to play in the 1st round to get tourney jitters out of the way.
