Grobe era was great but the handful of years after that were horrid.

Do not underestimate the subsequent hiring.

Let's say your criteria is: great coach capable of totally solid turnaround of moribund program located in remote area.  And, that coach stays, does not quickly move 'up to a better job.'  Oh, and that coach is pretty much hof the minute after he retires--which we hope is many, many years from now.

We may not see another hire like that anywhere across the land for decades.  We are very, very fortunate.

And it's good to see recognition of that spread through Bobcatland, from fans/alumni/students to prospective players.

And yet last year there were those willing to drive the bus over the staff and proclaiming they would not waste their time watching the bowl game. They are still out in the weeds waiting for the first miscue, bus all warmed up.

I hope our program can get to a point where we don't refer to 6 years of .500 ball as a great era.

Come on... to simplify the Grobe era in such terms shows a complete lack of perspective. What Jim Grobe started with makes the situation Frank walked into look like a dream job. Jim Grobe had no fans, no money, no facilities and had to beg to get a strength coach. All he had was a scheme and a dream. And you'll forgive him his first season in that situation when Ohio was 2-8-1.  In his 2nd season, he was an overtime loss to Ball STate from winning the MAC. YEAR 2!  While we lost momentum under Brian Knorr, we were still a PROGRAM in immensely better shape when Frank took over. The fact that we were a program that could survive 2001-2004 was a testament to the rebuilding job that Jim Grobe did.

I always figured that the job Grobe did and the job Solich did were quite similar. Both are good coaches. The only difference I see, really, is that circumstances were favorable for Solich to remain at Ohio, and remaining for as many years as he has have allowed him to make continued progress. I am sure that had Grobe remained, Ohio would have continued to progress as well.

Believe me, LC, they were different coaches coming into completely different situations. Jim Grobe was tasked with resurrecting us from the dead, and I mean that quite literally, because one more bad hire and the program might not even exist today (sidenote, he was choice 5 out of our 5 finalists, because the first four turned us down). It was bordering on hopeless.

As difficult as the Brian Knorr years were, he recruited pretty well and even beat an SEC team (albeit a bad one). he at least fielded competitive teams in two years, and the fan support that was built up during Grobe's tenure seemed to carry over pretty well under the circumstances. I don't wish to downplay anything Frank Solich has done, but he had WAY more to work with at the start of his tenure.

Does anyone have any Marshall game tickets (September 14th) for sale from a group purchase? If I understand the pricing system it looks like if a group buys 100 reserved tickets they are $12 each. Individual reserved are $35 each. I'm trying to take a couple kids down and just trying to keep the costs in line. It might just be cheaper for me to buy a family plan even if I can't go to all the games.

Grobe was 33-33-1 at Ohio, after 12 seasons at Wake Forrest he is 73-74. I think its safe to say that he's an avg coach that will get avg results, regardless of budget, facilities and conference affiliation.

Seriously?

I think that it's safe to say that he was an above average football coach during his time at Ohio University.

and that is the antithesis of hyperbole.
