I see that FAU just got Casey Thompson to commit. A starter at both Texas and Nebraska with 47 TD’s and 4800 plus yards. FAU has the top returning production according to ESPN gurus and a new well established coach in Tom Hermann. Should be a really tough match up.

I watched him a bit last year, decent. Fairly accurate. BUT, and I hate to say this, bc it's not always fair... he's not a winner.

Also, He's older than Jalen Hurts. 14 months younger than Joe Burrow.

Some of that experience might pay off for them, I doubt he's easily rattled, but he really hasn't been an impact player at any stop. He's 8-16 as a starter. A lot of bad losses. Lost to Georgia Southern last year in week two. He played for Tom Herman and Sark at UT and he went 4-8 as a starter, so I'm sure he's running a familiar offense.

This game was always a toss-up in my mind, early season game (Kurtis?) going on the road to a team you beat last season...? 10 wins. Target on the back. No sneaking up on teams. Will be tough.

When we played FAU last year, we had NO defense to speak of. They improved big-time by end of the season.

Having Thompson at 100% and the kid from Holy Cross should be HUGE. Torrie Cox, Birchette... think we're gonna be pretty damn good on that side of the ball.

OU hasn't stopped the run since 1972, so that's always a concern.

There are a lot of losses on defense, particularly at Safety and interior defensive line, plus all the depth at LB. I don't expect the defense to be as bad as they were early last year, nor as good as they were late, but we shall see.

SDSU and FAU are road games. They are early in the year and Kurtis might not have gone through many full out practices. I am pretty sure we'll be an underdog in both. I think that if you asked the Vegas oddsmakers right now which games that we would be favored in you'd get the games CFBN picked Ohio plus probably Bowling Green. Buffalo and Miami will be the other teams that could be #1 in the MAC East poll besides Ohio. Buffalo will be a road game. Miami is at home and Kurtis will hopefully have most of his legs and I'd like to think we'd be favored right now. I fell pretty good saying that we would be. NIU is hard to figure. That's on the road and if that team doesn't suffer the same sort of catastrophic injury prone season we'll be in for a much, much tougher game. We MIGHT be favored in that one too but I'm not entirely sure.

I think Toledo is going to be a near unanimous pick to win the MAC then maybe a lot of parity. We have a pretty good chance but need to find a way to win that game at Buffalo.

This is a sloppy know-nothing prediction. They simply put a W down for every home game except ISU, an an "L" down for every road game, except against the hapless Zippers. If they had studied the conference at all they'd know that the Kangaroos are probably going to be one of the most improved teams in the league next year, and BG probably won't be that good. Let's wait to see what Mr. Steele has to say. He really studies G5 teams. CFN, apparently, doesn't any more.

Perhaps you mean the formerly hapless Zippers? By the end of the season last year they were very respectable. In their final three games they lost to EMU by 6, demolished NIU, and then lost to Buffalo by 1. EMU and Buffalo were both 5-3, and tied for the second best regular season record behind Ohio. I expect Akron to be competitive in every game this fall.

Did you miss my sentence were I said that the Kangaroos were probably gong to be one of the most improved teams in the MAC next year? I think in context it's pretty clear I meant hapless in the sense of the perception of the writers of those ridiculous predictions.

Hello, We are new to OU football. We plan to travel to away games as much as possible. Can anyone tell me if there are regulars/groups that are usually at away games. We would love to get plugged in to Bobcat nation.

Agreed. Many are going to be surprised by Akron. Zips had their best HS/JUCO class in a decade and have capped that off with what is probably the best portal class in the MAC. The offense led the league in passing yards and that was with an ineffective run game to keep defenses honest. The deficiencies have seemingly been shored up and the defense was playing as physical as any team in the MAC by the end of last season. Akron’s biggest question mark is pass rush at defensive end. There is talent there, but unproven at this level.

But their quarterbacks are average at best. Looking like they're going to go with Undercuffler, whose arm is sub-optimal. Biggest obstacle is the lack of a winning culture. Also pretty hard to excel when you're playing in front of scores, not thousands, of fans. There is zero engagement between Akron/area citizens and this football program.

Not sure what you mean about average at best QBs? Irons made an All-MAC team in 2022, despite missing 2 full games and substantial parts of others. I agree Undercuffler doesn’t have as big an arm as Irons, but I wouldn’t call it sub-optimal. Zips also just landed Tahj Bullock from Virginia Tech.

You’re right in that a winning culture is an issue, which reared its head in several winnable games last year. It will probably prevent Akron from winning a game or two they should win this year, but the losses will no longer be due to a talent deficiency (outside of Kentucky and Indiana).

I don’t want to flip this thread about Akron, but since it was brought up I thought I’d chime in as I’ve paid close attention to them since Joe Moorhead took over. They have depth and a good chunk of the roster is now made up of former P5 talent.

For road games I believe the local alumni association hosts a bobcat bash that is advertised on the official OU sports website Ohiobobcats.com prior to game day. Also a hospitality village at Peden Stadium on game days.

P5 talent that could flame out after the first half of season like Kent's did last year after almost taking down Georgia.

Is the assumption all P5 talent could flame out because Kent State did last season? Sorry, guess I’m not following what is being conveyed.

I can't believe we've spent this much time talking about a 2-win Akron team.

Their offense in fact did NOT lead the league in passing yards... they were 2nd behind OU, (despite CJ throwing for only 550 yards in 4 games) because they were being blown out in every game and never ran the ball.
(OU: 3,893 yards passing. Akron: 3,396)

Kurtis alone nearly threw for more yards in 10 games than their entire team, so I wouldn't get too excited.

OU used the pass to beat teams to sleep, Akron used the pass to try to get back into games. Little different.

Now back to FAU.

Akron led the league in passing per game both overall and in conference. Ohio played two more games overall and one more game in conference.

Average per game overall:
Akron - 283.3
Ohio - 278.1

Conference
Akron - 299.6
Ohio - 272.7

My point to the original post was the impressive job Akron has done in recruiting since Joe Moorhead’s arrival and taking over an abysmal roster. To me, that would be reason for excitement for Akron fans or MAC fans that enjoy watching competitive football. That being said, I agree, let the Akron topic drop and let the original topic ensue.

Wasn't like their defense was very good with their all league safety. I mean they did get torched for 41 points.

I just saw a tweet that a couple donated $360,000 to a FAU collective. Sounds like they have some money down there.
247 sports says they have 11 P-5 transfers in this year.

I see loading up on P5 players that moved down indiscrimantlely flaming out as the rule not the exception. It happened at other G5's last year and Charlotte is an example of that. Those players are moving down to the G5 for a reason that goes beyond playing time.

The way TA is doing it cherry picking from the portal a guy here or there to address a specific need rather than best available player is more effective over a longer time frame. Certain positions it becomes a depth chart issue and you are hoping to bolster the two deep.
