This was Solich’s team. This team was not good from the beginning and wouldn’t be if Frank was still here.

Frank saw the summer and fall practice and was like "nahhhh."

Sorry GoCats…it’s all coaching at this level.

If Frank was still coach this might not have been his best team. It might have been a rebuilding year, but no way we are 1-6 with Frank at the helm. For one thing, Frank has never lost to an FCS team. My best guess is we be at worst 3-3 with Frank.

Oh I agree with that for sure, but I also don't think the talent is there to overcome any coaching failures that we currently have.

The truth is that an incompetent board of trustees hired an incompetent university president, who hired an incompetent athletic director, who hired an incompetent football coach. There's plenty blame to go around. A new AD should hire the next football coach.

Kindly point out where Cromer is incompetent. This board has degenerated to a bunch of pathetic losers who have no life. My wife laughed at most of the posts post-game today.

I think President Sherman should hire the next football coach, just the way President McDavis hired Solich. Don't believe Tom Boeh; he had nothing to do with the hire.

Poor preparation of Peden for opening game, poor contract negotiation for head coach, outrageous payout to FCS school, and poor media production. Is someone else responsible for those things?

So, you think Nellis was competent and hired the best possible candidate for athletic director, and that she made the best possible choice for head coach and negotitated the best possible contract? I believe that there is at least a kernel of truth in what Felix said, whether or not he's the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, or Mom and Pop grocery store.

Who would you hire in July OCF? What choices you got? You seem to know all the problems, but I’ve yet to see you offer what the alternative was! So please enlighten us.

Wasn’t one possibility to make Albin interim head coach. It seemed Frank’s retirement came out of the blue and there wasn’t time for a complete upheaval seeing the season start was imminent. A safe play could have been give Albin the interim tag and evaluate his performance over this season. I get the impact on recruits, etc. but in todays world of transfer portals, recruiting is always in flux, and you can mask that by bringing in transfers, it works both ways. It’s not like Frank’s assistants have been in high demand over the last decade or so. Albin wasn’t going anywhere or he would have been long gone years ago with Frank’s blessing. This just has the look of a loyalty Peter Principle hire.

Well stated BobcatSports. Because of the short time before the season you offer the "interim" tag to Albin. If he passes, he is gone and you go to the next coach on Frank's staff. Their choice is either take the job or leave. You tell the new coach he has a year to show that he can handle the job, then you will sit down and talk something long term. None of the current staff was going anywhere, especially Albin because if he or any of them were such hot commodities they would have been gone a long time ago. As for hurting recruiting or the program in general it could not be any worse then where we are now. Bottom line, you suffer through one year and then bring in a new HC and his staff. However, you do not give someone a raise to become the highest paid coach in our history and give him a guaranteed two years on a four year K.

BTC, there are alternatives if one does some creative thinking; the one ou79 outlines should have received serious consideration.

No, you clearly stated to clean house. That was July. Where are you getting 10 coaches in July? You getting a list of retired teachers from STRS who used to coach in SE Ohio? Again, you say you know the problems, but where is your solution? "creative thinking", without saying what that is, is not an answer. But I am used to that from you! As for OU79 and his "alternatives", he says Albin should have a year to show what he can do. That is a given. 7 weeks prior to the season is NOT getting a year! If he wanted to change anything, he got NO spring ball and no time to make changes. However, you fail to actually understand this.

If Solich was all that, and recruited all these great players, where are the MAC banners? You can’t run a guy out of town because he got 7 weeks to establish his identity as a coach. Simply not fair!

Ohio did what I described above BTC. In June of 1978 then HC Bill Hess died and Robert Kappes was named as his successor. Kappes lasted one year (1978) and was replaced when Ohio brought in Brian Burke as the new HC. Kappes was hired as the HC in June/July 1978 and guided the program through the '78 season only to be replaced by a new HC at the end of the same season. Just like Albin who came with Frank when he was hired, so too Bob Kappes came to Athens in 1958 with Bill Hess. So Bob Kappes was given way less than 12 months as HC. However, just like Kappes who had been on Hess' staff from the beginning, so too Albin has been on Frank's staff from the beginning and therefore not only knows the system but also knows the players intimately. He helped recruit, train and develop every single player currently in an Ohio uniform.

BTC, where did I say we should "clean house"? Please find this statement of mine to help out this old, feeble, decrepit mind. All I can remember saying is that we should fire Albin -- and the sooner the better. That was after game three or four. I don't recall ever using the term "clean house." And, I don't believe that I ever said anything about the hire, per se, until I'd seen a few games and it became clear that he wasn't up to the job. As I recall my attitude when he was hired was kind of "wait and see." I do remember being less than impressed with his first press conference, but I don't think I voiced that on this board, though others did. I did comment on the poor video with the even poorer audio that was used for his introduction. Yes, ou79's ideas seem, in retrospect, like something we should have done.

Difference is, Bob never wanted the head coaching job and did what he was asked to do in a very difficult time as Coach Hess passed away. Coach Kappes also stayed on staff through Burke, Cleve and Lichtenberg. Was a different time.

At the end of a 1-10 season, Bobcatsquared and I were enjoying a cold beverage at the OU Inn when Lichtenberg and Kappes walked into the bar.

'Squared asked Kappes, "How is this year's recruiting class?" Kappes responded, "Ask me in four years."

After Kappes left, 'Squared replied, "Nice job four years ago, coach."

Kappes was a good man, and very loyal Bobcat. After he retired, he stayed in town and was active in supporting Ohio athletics and the university. I've often wondered what he could have done if he'd been given more than that one year stint. I think he was a much better coach than that one year as head man would indicate. As BTC says, he never sought the head coaching job, but once he accepted it he gave it his all in a very difficult situation. Personally, I don't see any comparison between his situtaion and the one we have now with Coach Albin. I see that some could disagree with that, but to me Coach K's situation was completely different.

We have no business buying out any coaches contract. None. It still ticks me off that Larry Hunter was bought out of his final year because of Tom Boeh's unrealistic expectations. He wasn't even making that much at the time. Maybe this is karma.

With all due respect, Larry Hunter was never over his head. This is a mission of mercy. Albin is clearly over his head and drowning.

I have never been the person to scream "Fire the Coach!," because I am not a coach and know I am not am expert on the subject. I also understand that this program is part of a school of higher learning and, unlike the NFL, doesn't exist solely to satisfy the fans. So, I am still not going to utter those words.

I was also one of the few, if not the only, person to project a losing season this year because I understood that the non-conference schedule was a little more difficult than usual and that the late coaching change was a lot to suddenly deal with. I also understand that the athletic department had no choice but to hire Albin and give him something akin to the contract they gave him. I am doing the best I can to take all that into account.

I know BTC knows a lot more about coaching football than I and is more familiar with the internal state of the program than I. I respect his opinion.

Having said all that, I find it difficult, as an extremely analytic person who is doing his best to be as unemotional as possible, to not lay a lot of the blame for this year's debacle at the feet of Albin. In 2001, when Knorr took over for Grobe, we had the most returning starters in all of FBS and somehow managed to to lose 7 more games than we did the prior year with the same players. I could only place that blame on what HAD changed which was the coaching staff. This year is similar. Most G5 teams have most of their teams back. And while we really don't know how good Ohio was last year there are a lot of other things we can look at. The oddsmakers expected us not to fall off. We went off as favorites to beat Syracuse. We beat BGSU 52-10 last year. Will we even be favored to even win this year? While we have improved a little of late I still think we are about 20 points worse than realistic preseason expectations. While the picture is somewhat blurry, the head coach is the main thing that chanced and I find it difficult to not lay a lot of the blame for this on him.
