I'm not sure all what all the activity this year in the transfer portal has been, but I ran into this article, with NIU losing three starters in one day:
https://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/05/12/nort... /

This is yet another area that Ohio is not being hurt in compared to many other MAC schools in the last couple years. Ohio isn't losing all-conference players to the transfer portal like some have and are, and there are some schools trying to rebuild that keep losing players to it, which is a hurdle they are having a hard time clearing because they can't get their depth and numbers on even par. Ohio has been pretty much unphased by it, but there are several schools in the MAC who have been hammered by it.

i thought i'll add this here.

the canadian college football season has been cancelled. it plays in fall (i thought i'd add this as canadian pro football plays summer and fall)..

anyway, now two elite canadian players have transferred to ole miss. ESPN has an article on one.

three players that come to mind that teams should target: 1) waterloo, a lesser team historically, has a simply amazing quarterback Tre Ford, 2) calgary has twin brother TB/WR the Philpotts. their father was long-time CFL tailback

probably many other worthwhile names to target......... calgary, western, laval and montreal are the perennial top teams.

i think we will see alot of transfers........... will ucla, usc, michigan etc. even play this season?........ of course, maybe players won't want to burn a season of eligibility on this fiasco?

i think also it will affect recruiting...... players stay closer to home. good for LA teams. and my guess is it's a semi-permanent effect.. i realize somewhat contradiction of first paragraph but i think there are 2 effects.

It is a VERY bad sign for the NIU program. They also lost RB Tre Harbison, in addition to the other three, and Tre was third-team all-MAC in a conference LOADED with RB talent. How much of the exodus relates to the new coaching staff/head coach is an interesting question for NIU fans but undoubtedly a program red flag.

And the Loss of DT Jack Heflin was a major blow-not replaceable. The MAC, as a whole, is arguably position weakest at defensive tackle (maybe all conferences are, relatively speaking) and to lose a major talent at DT sucks for that squad. There are serious defensive implications there....

I’m breaking my 6 month silence here, but DeVante Mitchell tweeted that he was in the transfer portal a day ago. Tweet seems to have been shortly after taken down.

Tweet is still up there. Interesting move but I'm sure he is doing what's best for him and whatever situation he may be in.

Who will fill the void that he may have taken this season?

Ourlads has him backing up Hampton at SS.

In relation to Harbison, I think it's important to point out that not only is he transferring from NIU, but he also transferred to NIU as well. He was at Virginia before he transferred to NIU. This seems to be a young man who can't seem to find the proper fit for himself (maybe both on and off the field), and the fact that he's going to Charlotte to be closer to home speaks to that. As for Heflin, a big loss no doubt, but this is the kind of thing many other G5 schools are facing now. When Gehrig Dieter left BG a few years ago for Alabama, I knew this was the beginning of something not good for the MAC. It's yet another obstacle for the MAC. Typically when a P5 guy transfers to the G5, it's because he's behind guys on the depth chart and wants to go somewhere he can play. Typically when you see a guy from the G5 go to a P5 program, the G5 school is losing a guy who really developed into an all-conference caliber player, and instead of being rewarded with a proven senior - or sometimes a proven junior and senior - that difference-making year or two is wiped away and used at another school. It's yet another uphill battle that G5 schools are facing, and this is something Ohio is very fortunate to not be experiencing while many of our MAC peers are or have over the past several years.

Good points here. I think kids who transfer once are likely to do so again and the Harbison transfer may speak more to that than about the team.

If football is cancelled, this year would count as the sit out year, recruiting will be unknown and poaching at all levels maybe a better strategy than recruiting the unknown.

Speaking of transfers... looks like Ohio is interested in QB Armani Rogers from UNLV who just announced he is entering the portal on July 6. Since then he's started following 7 of our staff members

Looks like he's a redshirt senior, probably a grad transfer. He started most games as a redshirt freshman and was Mountain West freshman of the year. He only played nine games in the last two years. Not sure if that was injury or benching. He's a good runner but has struggled passing. Ran for 780 yards as a freshman and has 1472 rushing yards in 19 career games. He's only completed 50% of his career passes for 2233 yards, 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Maybe not. There's a ton of gambling going on in Athens right now in the bars and at house parties.

Right now the house is winning and the young customers are getting a lesson.

If there is no football this fall, then what? I presume that everyone loses a year of eligibility, and his Senior season just vanishes? That isn't really fair, but I don't see another alternative. If you gave everyone an extra year, you'd have to increase the scholarship limit from 85 to something like 105 for a few years to get everyone through the system, and that would add even more expense at a time when athletic departments are already hurting financially.

They gave extra eligibility to spring sports athletes. It allows schools to exceed scholarship limits for any athlete who would have been in their final year. Schools also may offer a roster spot but no financial aid. Of course, many players will decline the opportunity because they've graduated any are moving on. They'd have to remain students and still meet eligibility requirements, probably workin on grad degrees. One Division II softball player I talked to already had finished her master's degree, so remaining another year to play softball wouldn't have made a lot of sense.

CMU just lost its All-MAC TE Tony Poljan to Virginia. Another big loss for a MAC peer. I don’t think many Ohio fans realize or appreciate how fortunate the Bobcats have been when compared to other MAC schools when it comes to losing All-MAC players to the Power Five schools through the grad transfer route. It’s pretty amazing when you think about it actually, seeing what other MAC schools have lost via the grad transfer over the past several years to P5 schools while Ohio has not.

Would love to see the transfer outside vs the transfers in.....during the Solich years compared to rest of the MAC. We hardly lose big time players....

I do think that having a stable coaching situation has benefits.

yes, i do think people undervalue stability in CFB recruiting......

too many programs seem to fire HC's fairly quickly and then end up with the same or lesser record with the next HC..... i think the AD's and the Boards of Governors need to step back and analyze their program at a higher level.
