This is not a neutral site game, though I think it would be something worth trying for a few years, like Georgia/Florida playing in Jacksonville. WMU doesn't seem interested in this route. This is a home game for CMU who will keep the gate.

For some reason, NIU is playing BYU at the stadium of the Chicago Red Stars women's pro soccer team. It is closer to Chicago (about 12 miles from downtown) but it seats 4,000 fewer than NIU's stadium. Maybe they can charge more for tickets but they'll probably give a piece of the take to the soccer team. I'm sure they'd fill up Huskie Stadium on a Saturday in late October for BYU.

If the administration does not find us a way to play a home game in Columbus at the Columbus Crew stadium, they are silly. With correct marketing, they could get a LOT of people in Columbus to a weekend MACTION game down the line.

Why would we settle for a game in a stadium not much larger than our own?

NIU did this with some games at Soldier Field a decade or so ago, and had great attendance. Shortly thereafter, though, their attendance at home games started falling, even though they were winning. I've always wondered if the two were related. By moving home games to Soldier Field, they took money away from local hotels, restaurants, and bars, and moved it to Chicago. Did that affect the loyalty of their local fans?

I’d rather see Akron, who doesn’t draw anyway, schedule the Bobcats as a home game at Mapfre (Crew) Stadium. They would probably make more money. With three or four home Saturday games I don’t think we should willingly give up another on one.

Man, I am extremely skeptical. I think we'd be lucky to get 2,000 Bobcat fans to show up. I just don't see a 10K caravan from Athens to Columbus for a game against a MAC team in a bad-location-traffic-jam-parking-overrated-stadium. If weather is an issue, forget it. And, while there are tons of loyal Columbus Bobcats, they don't seem to be interested much in Bobcat athletics.... Maybe you'd get some Toledo fans to make the trek. But, nobody else in the MAC can be counted on for fans.... (Boy am I pessimistic today...)

A stadium we hardly fill?

I have been to a few of the XFL games here in DC and they are a party and a blast. soccer specific stadiums bring out the party.

There are a lot of Bobcats in the Columbus area that would come and a lot of football fans in general that would enjoy some MACTION, especially with tO$U off or something.

Bowling Green tried the Crew stadium idea in 2012 for the Black Friday game and got less than 12,000 in the door. I'm not impressed. Maybe give it a shot for a year when there's a home game on Black Friday, but not an October Saturday.

When they build the new Crew stadium downtown in the arena district it will be a good draw!

I already lose multiple Saturdays in Athens to stupid weeknight football. If this adminstration gives away another Saturday to play a home game at a neutral site, I will have words.

No worries, this is just someone with an internet idea, it’s not actually happening.

We played a MAC "home" game at the Horseshoe in Columbus in the 1980s. Did. Not. Work.

I have to agree. Athens is rather close to Columbus, a one hour drive down Rt. 33, maybe slightly longer. It's extremely easy for Columbus alumni to go to an Ohio football game in Athens now as is. If they aren't willing to make that short drive to Athens now for a Saturday game, I highly doubt they're willing to go to a game at Crew Stadium.

Since the bypasses were completed, I am in Franklin County and 55 minutes from my door to Peden. When I wear my Bobcat gear around town , I get comments from fellow Bobcats. I ask them if they go to football games and they say they would but they might miss a Buckeye game. Those are the Columbus Bobcats fans. (I know not all of us)

It wasn’t a MAC game, but you are correct, it didn’t work. Against the Richmond Spiders.

It's actually 4 to 6 thousand less than ours. The luxury boxes are pretty nice though and the catering is way above average.

Nope, because we’d make Tom Boeh in charge of tickets and he’d get 32,000 in there.

If Tommy Boy could get 32 K in there, Jimmy Boy would be able to get 36K.

Sadly as much as most Ohio alumni love their alma mater, it doesn't usually translate into strong support of Bobcat Athletics. If, say years ago, Ohio somehow made it into the Big 10 or another power 5 and was playing on the same stage as OSU, I think there would be a much larger interest/commitment especially football and basketball from students and alumni. Winning the MAC and getting to play in the Dollar General Bowl just doesn't have the sizzle for most.

But overcoming the "second tier" or however you want to describe it perceived status of the athletics program by the average student will be a challenge indefinitely.

Why has everyone assumed a Saturday game? Give up one of those middle of the week November games and make it high school band night showcasing the 110 and play it in Ohio Stadium. Drop the Varsity show in Ohio Theater for this event.

It takes a few years to set up one of these and AOC has promised that November evening temperatures in 2023 will be in the mid 60's with the only worry being Acid Rain.
