Depends on how you define "norm." if it refers to overall record, yes we'd be around 500. If you define "norm" as the coaches from Bill Hess to Brian Knorr, you'd be around 400.

Grobe finished at .500

Burke came within a total of 3 points from finishing .500 (had a tie and a 1 point loss)

Bryant, Lichtenberg, and Knorr were pathetic.

Therefore revert back to norm would appear to be .500 - I refuse to have Bryant, Lichtenberg, and Knorr define us for ever more.

Time to get on the roller coaster.

I'm not sure if you were implying there was some sort of buyout that would have been necessary for Frank to NOT be the coach at Ohio in 2020-21?

There wasn't. His contract was set to expire. This was an extension before it expires.

AD Julie Cromer is in a tough spot. She in NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM can replace Frank unless Frank wants to be replaced. It's that simple to me.

If they didn't renew and Frank publicly said he wasn't done ... that would be a nightmare for her. So she had really no option but to offer him an extension.

Frank will walk away when he wants to walk away .... and I'm not sure that will be anytime soon.

So buckle up for more 7-5, 8-4 (5-3, 4-4) seasons ....

And yes ... I fully agree this absurd panic that as soon as Solich does retire, Ohio automatically goes back to a 1-11 trash heap is ridiculous.

I have faith Cromer will hire a very capable replacement and Frank has left a very strong, solid foundation to build from.

I just wish we'd get to see that building happen sooner than later ...

You're just making my point even more clear, LC. WMU hasn't fallen into some black hole because PJ Fleck took a bigger/higher paying job. If Ohio reverts back to their norm as you call it, it's a .500 football team. Not far from where we are now, is it?

For Ohio, the results have varied greatly for long stretches of time, so it very much depends what period you look at:
1869-2019: 50.5%
1869-2004: 49.0%
1946-2004: 43.2%
1970-2004: 35.0%
1970-1995: 32.8%

If I had to guess which "historical norm" would apply, I'd say anything pre-WWII would probably not relate to current results. Would the Widdoes and Hess years relate? Maybe. Thus, the correct "historical norm" would probably be somewhere between 35% and 49%. Frank's success has done a great deal to improve the image of Ohio football, and the facilities that have been built are much better than before, so I wouldn't expect Ohio to revert to the numbers from 1970-1995 any time soon, and it will probably be closer to 49% than 35%.

That said, even if Ohio wins 49% of its games over the ten years following Frank, it won't be 49% every year. There will be good years and bad, no doubt.

2 year deal, highest paid OHIO Coach, something that Schaus was unwilling to do. Kudos to 5he new AD for taking care of Coach Solich.

I little bird told me that Julie is quite happy with Frank and that having a football coach with his national reputation was a factor in her accepting the job. Not the deciding factor I'm sure, but an important one. She hopes to use that reputation to help build the program further. It'll be interesting to see if that happens.

Definitely a better working relationship than existed in the past. Glad to see this happen.

Hmm . . . 1869 . . . I believe that's the year that General Sherman came to town after the war and coached that first OHIO football team. One to their victories was against Ohio A&M, even though the school wasn't founded until a decade later. When one lives in alternative universe, anything is possible and facts are fungible. In this vein, I had to correct some dufuses on the LSU board who were claiming that Sherman was not only their first president but also their first football coach. His first loyalties were obviously to OHIO, where is step father, Thomas "Whig Forever" Ewing, graduated in the first class.

This is all speculation on my part but what are the chances Jimmy Burrow returns as DC as soon as this season now that he knows Frank is back at least for another 2 years? With his son more likely than not being drafted by the Bengals and now only being 2 1/2 hrs from him and NFL games on Sunday’s it could work.

Sunday is game plan day, coaches work 10 hour days on that day.

I don't think there is a recruit in OHIO, Nebraska, or anywhere else who tells friends and family that OMG "THE Frank Solich" reached out and is recruiting them. His name and integrity may carry cache with HS coaches. Alumni in general appreciate him - but as I have mentioned before, the casual Ohio alumni in the Carolinas that I have spoken with believe that he has already won at least one MAC championship.

Which goes back to my point that the MAC Championship or any conference championship for that matter isn't that important. Nobody can name the last 5 PAC-12 champions but they can tell you who has made the playoff and remember who's made the bigger bowl games. Indiana playing in the Gator Bowl will stick in peoples minds. Its not a sport like baseball where to begin to understand what is going on the first thing you do is check the league standings. They check out the Top 25. internally to an athletic department the conference championship is the end goal. Missouri can win the SEC East but to outsiders it doesn't translate to anything if they end up in the Music City Bowl. Mizzou fans though I'm sure would be quite proud of that SEC East championship.

It sounds that way from the article I read below. When Frank means build he means build facilities. I don't think we'll see a selling out of the FB schedule like Kent for the payday money as that's not Frank's way.

I'm a big Frank defender. However, just like MAC championships are not as important as they once were, you can't compare bowl appearances/wins with past eras. Brian Burke's 1982 team would have had an appearance in the Commodore Computer Bowl or the Chess King Fashion Bowl with today's lower standards.
