Think about these few facts and all should agree with my assessment;
1) We lost too many offensive players from last year to replace.
2) We lost some defensive line man from last year.
3) The media all picked us to have a great year, why, because we had the best QB in the league.
4) We all wanted to believe all the hype, however, now reality has sent in.

WE AREN'T AS GOOD AS WE THOUGHT WE WERE! PERIOD.

We can all dissect the stats all we want but in the end points #1-3 tells the story.
We are at the precipice of a make or break season. The next game is on the road against a tuff team. We need this week off to right the ship, couldn't come at a better time.
Going backwards after all the good success these past 10 or so years will be a hard pill to swallow for the team and the coaching staff not to mention the university and alumni.
Will we or can we rebound from this poor start?

I disagree about your assessment of the impact on getting to Detroit. The opposing coaches will see our weaknesses and vulnerabilities and plan accordingly. That impacts future games and results.

I’ll continue to say that all games matter-that’s why they publish records. They count, these weren’t some kind of exhibition games. Do you somehow think that people pay money and spend time going to games that don’t matter . Rubbish. I simply don’t get it. Frank says becoming a perennial winning team that is ranked is one of his objectives for Ohio football. Losing all 3 non conference FBS games keeps us from doing that. I’m with him, win the games to give Ohio a higher national profile.

Although there may be other reasons, in addition to their own play for their effectiveness, I seem to remember Mr. Croutch and Mr. Gullett doing pretty well on the defensive side of the ball too.

The defense has a long way to go to be as good as I thought they could be, yet, they are ahead of where last year's defense was at this point, especially in pass defense. Last year the defense was simply awful at the start of the season, but they improved substantially as the season went on, and by the bowl game, they were dominant. I think that if the center of the defensive line can continue to improve the defense will be fine. I could add that the DE need to get some pass rush, but I think that they are being asked to pay more attention to the run, and if they center of the line improves, we'll see more pass run from outside, too.

The offense, on the other hand, is another story. It has been bad, and Rourke looks like he's pressing, trying to carry the team, and the result of pressing is rarely good. The receivers aren't helping him, either, as they have dropped too many, and the running game has been a disappointment, thus far. I don't envision this offense turning into what we saw last year, but if they can improve the running some, the passing lanes will open up, and they can get some points.

So, IF the defensive line can stop the run, and IF the running game can generate some offense, this team can turn things around, and be playing much better by the end of the year. If the defensive line can't stop the run, it's going to be a long season. If the running game continues to struggle, it's going to be a long season. Both need to happen.

I haven't given up hope on the Bobcats MAC East title chances yet.

I agree that it looks bad with the 1-3 record and the Jekyll-Hyde defense the last few weeks.

I was hoping the record would be better but I had the 'Cats possibly being 1-3 in non-conference.

The three non-conference losses were against top 50 FBS teams. One was by two points on the road. One was by ten points on the road to a team that will be ranked in the top 25 within two weeks, a team we played with a sick quarterback.

The the ULL game is the kind of rotten egg Ohio teams lay a few times a year. See the Miami game, first half, last year. Glad they got one of them out of the way in a non-conference game. As bad as the offense was in the first half and the defense was in the second half, Ohio was still in the game at the end of the third, 31-24.

Ohio's offense has had some growing pains, no doubt. If we get our center back and a few of our RBs, we will be good. With Cam, Tyler, Hooks, cox and Luehrman, we got enough passing weapons.
