Not a freshman. However #15, Drew Keszei is my fresh face pick to show "impact" as a possession receiver.

While Keszei is a Redshirt Sophomore, but he's new to the position, so he belongs here. We can also look at Redshirt Freshmen, where a number of players will make an impact. The ones we have heard mentioned the most are on offense, where we hear regularly about O'Shaan Allison, Buckner and Hooks. While mentioned less, there are a lot of Redshirt Freshmen on the defensive side, though, in fact a squad of 11 players. Which of these will we see?
DL - McCraken, A. Baker
DE - Stai, Watkins
LB - McCrory, Thompson, Houston, Wood
CB - Birchette, Gregory
S - Collier

If the Depth Chart that just appeared has any accuracy, the Redshirt Freshmen that will make the most impact are Allison, Buckner, and Hooks, who will be starters. Redshirt Freshmen that will be backups include Danneker, Mishler, Wood, and Collier.

I'd be more than happy to be part of an out of state focus group. Asheville in the west, the bsach on the east and a boat load of good stuff in between.

The middle part of the state is on my short list of places to visit. Lots of good medium cities to go along with RD. I've been to Asheville and points local countless times and to OBX and the coast a lot too.

Did some traveling in and around Charlotte and the Piedmont when in the area for business a few years ago. Seems like a nice place to live.

Do all incoming freshman enroll in summer school?

Thanks, allen, That’s why I asked the question. I really had no idea.

That'd be disappointing but it seems to happen to virtually all of the surprise signings who had had really good offers. Arkley said a while back that Ohio hoped he'd be in during the spring but was held up by his international (Bahamas) status.

Getting ready to head to my NC beaches...but before I go doing a fave pastime...watching Bobcat TV videos. Not sure if any of these guys will even lose their redshirt...but if they do I think they could be impact players....no certain order of importance...except the first one.

Denzel Daxson-DT-6’2”-335

Crossing fingers and toes that he shows up healthy and eligible. We have decent returnees at DT....but this guy looks like double team material.

Kurtis Rourke-QB-6’3”-200

Looks to be a better passer than his brother. After spring drills he may be QB number 2. Maybe the reason the Ft. Wayne kid went from QB to WR.

Walter Wilborn-RB-5’10”-215

Probably 3rd best running back on the roster...but maybe only because of inexperience. We all know what can happen to RBs...what was AJ....5th team?

Gary Hoover-OL-6’4”-325

Had trouble with this one since I think we have at least 3 new OL guys who might contribute. Gary as a JUCO is older and plays the left side where we need help.

DeMontre Tuggle-RB-5’9”-185

I hesitated to pick another RB but it’s the position I worry the most about because of possible injury. He’s a scat back who looks to be a decent receiver.

Good choices. RB, OLB, and DT are my biggest concerns so if we can get anyone to make an impact at RB or DT, that will be fantastic.

We will see what Ohio Strength work does to these freshmen. A few years ago a DL recruit was 300+lbs. He now is listed at 265. I expect some of this every year.

Great question.

My take is I'd have to think that the biggest possible opportunities on defense for young players would come from the DL or LB groups just based on possible need. After that, safety. There are a good number of sophomores who are talented and ready which will also make it tough for freshman to see the field on defense.

We are pretty stacked at DE with Evans/Ogun-Semore, Conrad/McKnight, & Chukwu. Same at CB with Hudson, Brooks, Ilyaas Motley, Xavior Motley, and Tariq Drake. So I dont see a ton of opportunities there in close games barring injury unless someone really hits it out of the park in fall camp.

I think we will see at least one or two players get a look at safety with Hagan being in his last year. I'd think by the end of the year a future starter could emerge. I'd have to guess that Alvin Floyd is the top candidate to replace Hagan but Collier surely could be in the mix.

While Popp and and Conner may be the starters going into fall camp, I'd have to say that their names are written in pencil. Tyler Gullett really took over for Conner by conference games so we'll see how Conner does. Popp has been a great special teams guy but the future is not there as he is a senior unless he really shines in fall camp. I think we might see significant time from rFr Houston or Thompson, or T.J. Robinson. Cannon Blauser might be a name to add to the list because he is an early enrollee and has the size to play early.

I think playing time at DL is available for anyone who can stand out in fall camp and if I am Solich I am going deep here in practice to find contributors. Kylen McCracken has the size to get it done as does Jeremiah Burton

If I recall correctly, two redshirt Freshmen are on the 2-Deep on defense, Collier at Safety, and Wood (converted form Safety) at SLB.

No. When I came to Ohio in summer 2002 it was 6 of us. We went to class early that summer to get ahead. Great experience to work with Dontrelle Jackson, Stafford Owens and Keyon Ingram at that time. Was able to learn the route tree (although) my high school playbook had more routes. Back in the Wing Tee Triple Option days of going triple option on 3rd and 15. Man have we came a long way!

Nothing wrong with the option on 3rd and long. Rourke seems to run the lead and the load option on 3rd and long very well. It’s all in the execution and the talent.

In 2002 no, today Frank has the money to do that and right now over 90% of them are on campus in class and the off season program. Times have changed.

LOL, it works better when you have the trigger man and talent to run it. Seem to remember Tom Osborne having the talent, and it worked well for him.

I agree that the option can be effective on third and long, and obviously it works best when you have the right players. My point was a simple extension of that, that when you have the ability to pass effectively, too, the option is even more effective. If the pass is also a threat, the defense can't just stack up to defend the option; they also have to defend against the pass.

Rourke is effective running the option partly because he's good at it, but also partly because he's also an effective passer, so the defense can never line up, and just think "OK, here comes the option". The reverse is true as well. The defense can never just drop back in pass defense, and forget the run on 3rd down.
