Ohio's Schedule Released

ATHENS, Ohio-- The Ohio football team has released its 2019 regular season schedule today in conjunction with the Mid-American Conference office.

The Bobcats' 12-game slate features six home games at Peden Stadium -- including four Saturday dates. Ohio will hold its annual Homecoming celebration on Saturday, Oct. 12, when it takes on Northern Illinois.

An updated 2019 MAC football schedule will be released in June with kick times and a television schedule for the first three weeks of the regular season and midweek games during November. All other game kick times and television will be announced 12 days prior to the scheduled game.

Ohio will be joining the MAC, the NCAA and ESPN in celebrating the 150th anniversary of college football in 2019. The celebration will include social media content and in-game promotions that will tell the story of the great players, coaches and teams that make up the history of Ohio's football program. The campaign will culminate when Ohio takes on archrival Miami in the 'Battle of the Bricks' on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at Peden Stadium in a nationally televised matchup on ESPN2 that will be played on the 150th anniversary of the first-ever college football game. Ohio will look to make history that day with a call to students and fans to create the first-ever sellout of a MAC midweek game.

The 2019 regular season will conclude with the 23rd Marathon MAC Football Championship game on Saturday, Dec. 7 (time/television TBA) from Ford Field in Detroit. This will mark the 16th Marathon MAC Football Championship game at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions, Super Bowl XL and the 2009 NCAA Men's Final Four.

Saturday, Aug. 31: vs. Rhode Island (Peden Stadium; Athens, Ohio)
Band Day
Notable: The Bobcats will be meeting Rhode Island for the first time.

Saturday, Sept. 7: at Pitt (Heinz Field; Pittsburgh, Pa.)
Notable: Ohio will battle Pitt for the first time since Sept. 9, 2005, when Ohio knocked off the Panthers in overtime, 16-10, at Peden Stadium.

Saturday, Sept. 14: at Marshall (Joan C. Edwards; Huntington, W. Va.)
Battle for the Bell
Notable: Ohio is set to renew its "Battle for the Bell" rivalry with Marshall, with the Bobcats and the Thundering Herd squaring off for the first time since Sept. 12, 2015 -- a 21-10 win for Ohio. Ohio last visited Huntington on Sept. 13, 2014. The Bobcats lead the all-time series with Marshall, 33-20-6.

Saturday, Sept. 21: vs. Louisiana (Peden Stadium; Athens, Ohio)
Parents Weekend
Notable: Ohio will be playing Louisiana for the third time and first time since the Bobcats topped the Ragin' Cajuns, 38-31, on Oct. 30, 2010, at Peden Stadium.

Saturday, Oct. 5: at Buffalo (UB Stadium; Amherst, N.Y.)
Notable: Ohio will be seeking its first win in Buffalo since 2009. The Bobcats handed the 2018 MAC East Division champion Bulls their only conference loss of the regular season – a 52-17 blowout at Peden Stadium on Nov. 14.

Saturday, Oct. 12: vs. Northern Illinois (Peden Stadium; Athens, Ohio)
Homecoming
Notable: Northern Illinois is set to visit Peden Stadium for the first time since 2014.

Saturday, Oct. 19: vs. Kent State (Peden Stadium; Athens, Ohio)
Touchdown For Teachers
Notable: Ohio has won the last five meetings against Kent State, including the last two matchups that have been played in Athens.

Saturday, Oct. 26: at Ball State (Scheumann Stadium; Muncie, Ind.)
Notable: Ohio is set to take make its first trip to Muncie, Ind., since 2012, and the Bobcats will be looking for their first road win over Ball State since 2009.

Wednesday, Nov. 6: vs. Miami (Peden Stadium; Athens, Ohio)
Battle of the Bricks
Television: ESPN2
150th Anniversary of College Football Celebration
Let's Make History! First-Ever Sellout of MAC Midweek Game
Notable: The Bobcats have won the last six editions of the 'Battle of the Bricks' that have been played in Athens, including a 45-28 win in the most recent matchup at Peden Stadium on Oct. 31, 2017.

Tuesday, Nov. 12: vs. Western Michigan (Peden Stadium; Athens, Ohio)
Television: ESPN2/ESPNU
Senior Night
Notable: Ohio will square off against Western Michigan for the second year in a row. The Bobcats rolled to a 59-14 victory over the Broncos in Kalamazoo on Nov. 1, marking Ohio's first win over Western Michigan since 2006.

Tuesday, Nov. 19: at Bowling Green (Doyt Perry Stadium; Bowling Green, Ohio)
Television: ESPN2/ESPNU
Notable: The Bobcats have won each of the last three meetings against Bowling Green, including a decisive 49-14 triumph on Homecoming this season.

Tuesday, Nov. 26: at Akron (InfoCision Stadium; Akron, Ohio)
Television: ESPNU/ESPN3 or ESPN+
Notable: Ohio has come away with wins in four of its last five trips to Akron.

Good schedule.
Even if they don't win against Pitt and Marshall, which I think they can do - the MAC schedule looks favorable. Having Northern and Western at home helps. This could be a 10-2 team. 8-4 at the worst. 4 home Saturdays. This HAS to be the year Frank gets the MAC.

Frank on the overall win total list is going to make this interesting. One more win and he will have 107 all time at the school, 1 shy of Bill Hess to tie for #2 on the chart which he can do with a win at Pittsburgh. That would have Solich with his first and 108th both against Pitt. Next up is Don Peden himself at 121 wins and Frank should be getting close as the season progresses. He could very well be sitting at 115-118 career wins at Ohio by the time the season is done.

I know BG hasn't been good, but that late trip up there is gonna suck. It's probably either gonna be that one or Ball State where we trip up for no reason at all.

As long as ESPN/CBS Sports TV have control the Bobcats will probably never get November Saturday games. If you want Saturday games in November attend Ball State or Kent games. Nobody who is a fan of Ohio home games prefers games in November starting at 7 pm on a week night, but unless the Bobcats start losing a bunch they will always be selected to be on TV during the week. The down side is if Ohio were 3-9 or 4-8 every season they would play more Saturday games later in the season. Does anyone want that?

That is funny. And I think the +1200 is waaaaaaay low! Even if they pay people ... there will be 6000 people there tops. I'd set the line at more +50000000 that it's a sellout

Seriously? Outside of Temple in 2011 when was any other midweek game well attended? That game claims 17k ... not sure how accurate that really is. I was there ... was a good weeknight crowd, but not sure it was 17k.

Those numbers they produce are so incredibly over-inflated for weeknights. I was there for UB in 2016 ... in a cruddy rainstorm and there wasn't 2000 there and they claimed it to be 17k.

Weeknight football does not draw. Period. It just doesn't.

I don't care if Ohio is 9-0 and nationally ranked ... they will NOT draw a true 20k for that game.

I think, on paper, they can be better than 8-4. But I think 8-4 is an absolute possibility with what we've seen over the years.

The thing I like about this schedule is that Ohio has only one short week, that being the WMU game. That game, however, is at Ohio, and the week before is also a home game. With no travel for either game, the short week is less stressful. In 2018 Ohio also had only one short week game, Miami, but it was a road game, and preceded by a road game, so there was travel on both ends of it, which doesn't help at all.

This schedule is also incredibly favorable for another reason. If I was going to pick the four weakest MAC teams on Ohio's schedule, it would be Kent, Akron, BG, and Ball State. All but Kent are road games. Meanwhile, the four hardest games are probably NIU, WMU, Miami, and Buffalo, and all but Buffalo are home games.

This schedule has MACC written all over it.

Is it because we have Kent St. visiting Athens that Saturday?

Not sure what the final record will be, but guessing the team from Oxford will leave Athens with a loss. Much like Akron this season, this will be pay back time.

What could really suck is playing at Akron on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and winding up on ESPN+ instead of ESPNU. The other MAC game that night is WMU-NIU, which could be for the West title. Unless they do a doubleheader, with games at 6:00 and 9:30, one of the games will likely wind up on the pay service. At least we get ten days before the MACCG.

It's always funny to read the same script year after year where the same posters overrate Ohio's returning team vs. underrate the league's returning teams. OU has significant losses on offense to the line, running back and receiver. Rourke has to become a more accurate passer while being surrounded by a lot of unproven players. OU is not at a level where you can simply overlook these holes and call for a MAC championship squad. A 6-8 win season and watching another team win the MAC championship is the most likely outcome.

To be clear, I'm not forecasting an "improved team for next year". I expect the offense to drop, and the defense to improve. The net result will be mostly sideways, but slightly down. If the team improves as the year goes on, which the last couple teams did, by the end of the year it could be very good, very comparable to last year.

I see a much more favorable schedule, however, and I see other teams that were competitive at the top dropping significantly more, particularly Buffalo, which lost a large number of it's best players to transfer. Akron has a new coach, and that generally means an off year. Miami lost their QB, but otherwise will be comparable to last year, but will play at Ohio this year. I don't seen Kent or BG ready to compete for the top of the East yet, but both will improve.

In the West, I see Toledo, EMU, and NIU all slipping slightly, and WMU, Ball State, and CMU all improving significantly. The result will be more parity in the West than there has been for a long time.
