But that play, in and of itself didn't necessarily change the outcome of the game. New Orleans could have used more clock,but still needed to score. The odds are against it,but they could have fumbled or ,if they needed to go for a field goal,had it blocked or missed. I can't see the the commissioner doing anything but trying to find a solution for next season. I'd like to see a coach be able to challenge any non call,like the missed pass interference call against the Saints. Despite what some rules experts will tell you, there is clearly no actual standard. On virtually every play in both college and pro football you can see pass interference no calls -- sometimes downright muggings. IMHO, the rules on pass interference need to be drastically changed. This particular case is just getting so much attention because of the magnitude of the game and obvious effect it likely had on the outcome. It happens maybe once or twice a game and from what I've seen winds up calling interference about 75% of the time. As for Goodell invoking the rule, won't happen. The rule says he can change the result or have the game replayed due to an "extraordinary act." The refs screwing up are so commonplace in the NFL that the rule doesn't apply. Here is a good idea, let's require players and coaches to be perfect in a game (after all they are paid very well, they should not make mistakes), like we do officials. Problem solved. If you're wrong,you lose a time out. Last X minutes of game. Booth review. New Orleans has a very legit beef. But New Orleans is just as at fault for losing the game. Even after the non-call New Orleans kicked a field goal to take a 23-20 lead with a little over 1:30 left to play. So New Orleans still had the lead. But then it was the New Orleans defense that allowed the Rams to drive and make a game-tying field goal. Then on overtime, having the ball first, it was New Orleans who committed the turnover and gave the ball to the Rams. So New Orleans still had their chances. They just didn’t capitalize on them. The Rams did. Yes, cheap publicity, but these things are putting a hurting on the finances of State Associations all around the country.
