This definitely doesn't appear to be your run of the mill tropical storm. Conditions may be absolutely atrocious on Saturday. Is there any chance this game gets moved to Athens? I would assume not, but didn't know if there were any precedence for something like that. I would also assume they would have to make a call like that very early this week.

LOLOLOLOL no way in hell it gets moved to Athens. It will get cancelled before that.

If I had to guess, it will end up like the Notre Dame/NC State game from a couple years ago. Rainy and ugly.

I think officials would not hesitate to cancel this game. I don't think it would get made up, either.

If that happens, I wonder what a two-week layoff does for the team.

I've seen some headlines this past week about Nebraska cancelling their home-opener this season against Akron due to weather.

Nebraska asked Akron to play the game on Sunday rather than Saturday, and Akron declined causing a dispute on weather Akron was owed their guarantee $ for the game.

I didn't bother reading the contract specifics, but it sounded like some legal BS debating "rain-cancellation" vs "lightning-cancellation" in the contract terminology.

...

I don't think there is any chance of that specific situation here (both Virginia and Ohio have Saturday games the following week & it doesn't sound like the weather situation will be any better on Sunday) but I think it's worth highlighting the above situation to point out beyond the football-concerns the powers-that-be will probably be factoring in the contract into their decision about this game and when/where it is played.

I'd guess it's either a rain-soaked affair or cancelled outright.

I've seen crazier things happen.

The folks on the Sabre.com are counting on this win as one of six to make them Bowl Eligible which to a big hit when they lost to Indiana.

Some of the fans are hoping Ohio might reschedule the game at the end of the season. I pointed out that the ESPN scheduled which includes a stint of 4 games in 19 days makes it unlikely Ohio would be excited to do that. I don't know what type of financial arrangement or insurance UVA has in the event of a cancelled game.

My wife is a member of the UVA Alumni Association and just received this email about parking for this Saturday and the rest of the season.

I was not aware of that Nebraska-Akron dispute, but in looking it up, I found this. Looks like Nebraska will not only upset Akron with its decision, but also Nebraska fans: https://www.ticketnews.com/2018/09/nebraska-football-no-r... /

Edit: I'm curious if teams that count on big paydays from sporting event attendance secure event insurance to minimize the financial impact. Losing a event where 80,000-100,000 attend is a real financial hit.

Wow, Akron got $1.17m for the game? Has Ohio ever gotten over $1m for a game? I'm thinking most of Ohio's "money games" are in the $800k range.

I earned my MBA from Ohio U and live in the Richmond area. I have been waiting several years for this game so that I can travel to see my Bobcats. I have my tickets and my wife, son, and me plan on being decked out in Bobcat green! That is if Hurricane Florence doesn't spoil things for us!

Well, being that The Cats won't be leaving for VA till Friday there is amply time to wait to make a decision.
Sunday is certainly a real possibility.

I read something that apparently their contract would give Akron the money if the game was cancelled due to flooding but there was nothing about the game being cancelled by lightning. Sort of like many homeowners' insurance policies in the Gulf Coast area that pay off for hurricane wind damage but not for flooding. Did the wind damage cause the house to sustain flood damage, or would it have flooded anyway?

I am planning on taking a large group of fans but as of today I can’t imagine this game is played.

State of emergency, Evacuations, grass field, 12 inches of rain.

Do not see it.

They ought to negotiate playing the game in Athens, and then playing a game at Virginia in a future year. The only other option would seem to be to move the game to some neutral site further up the East Coast, and the logistics of that would likely be a nightmare.

Pete Nakos suggests there is a legitimate offer on the table to move this game to Athens, Ohio.

Also, can we please stop comparing this to the Akron-Nebraska situation?

That games was cancelled essentially day of due to a midwestern thunderstorm.

This is a major US bound hurricane wth days and days of warnings. I think the situations are entirely different.

I'm guessing IF it gets moved, that the start will be as early as possible to get ahead of the rain.

Here is the relevant contract clause:
https://twitter.com/Pete_Nakos96/status/1039515040578121728

This is pretty clearly a situation within the exemption, as either an act of God or natural disaster.

So it either gets moved or we lose an extra $650,000 of revenue, on top of the declines in season ticket sales.

How bad does UVa want a shot at bowl eligibility?

From what I read, does the decision need to be mutually agreed to?
