MAC Media Preseason Poll has OHIO winning the MACCG over NIU.

It would be nice to exorcise those demons from the 2011 MACCG that I have no memory of happening whatsoever nope Northern Illinois won the championship that year but we sure didn't completely blow the whole second half of that game because it never happened.

Ohio was picked by 21 of 24 voters to win the East and 13 of 24 to win the overall title.

As I recall, in 2012 we were the consensus (or damn near) pick to win it all. Solich made the comment that we had to avoid winding up in a ditch like the guy in the DirecTV commercial. We started out great, beating Penn St on our way to 7-0 and a national ranking. Then, the ditch opened up and we finished 8-4, 4-4. Since then, I've been wary when someone says we're a lock to even win the division.

This year is the most favored Ohio has been in the preseason poll to win the conference overall. In 2012, Ohio got every vote to win the East but only five of 11 votes for the championship.

In my opinion, the wildcard will be injuries. Twice before Ohio has has good teams, and been crushed with injuries. The 2008 team was good enough to lead Ohio State going into the fourth quarter, but after crushing injuries, limped to a 4-8 finish. Eight of 22 starters, including some of their best players, were lost for the season that year, Michael Mitchell, Andrew Mooney, Theo Scott, Mitchell Morsillo, Julian Posey, Eric Kenkle, Garry Schussler, and Michael Brown. They also lost six backups for the season.

The 2012 team had it worse, losing nine of 22 Starters for the season: Ryan McGrath, Vince Carlotta, Landon Smith, Mario Dovell, Carl Jones, Neal Huynh, Tremayne Scott, Travis Carrie, and Xavier Hughes. They also lost ten backups that year.

The flip side is that there have also been years with very few injuries, and those teams have done even better than expected. In 2006, the only starter lost was Bush (LG), and that helped the team exceed expectations. In 2011, no players at all were lost for the season, according to my records. In 2016, there was only one season ending injury, OUellette.

Normal seems to be to lose 3-5 losses. You lose less than that, the team will exceed expectations. You lose more than that, it gets rough, and then you find out what sort of depth you have. I think Ohio has pretty good depth this year, but I prefer not to find out.

That Ohio was one of the top scoring teams in the country last year and is projected to possibly lead the NCAA this year the program is finally "there". 15 years ago the best the fans thought Ohio could ever do is have a 2006 type season where the offense didn't make mistakes and the team lucked into a spot in the MAC title game and won it. I thought it was theoretically possible to have a high performing team and not just a hard working overachieving one, the Grobe formula at Ohio. As a fan its time to put the worries and concerns aside and just expect to do well. If Solich can win 11 this year he sets a school record for victories. He wins 10 and the MAC Championship that will be very good too.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

So, before the preseason picks for 2019 start coming out, how did the prognosticators do for 2018? Here were their picks:
http://www.stassen.com/preseason/consensus/2018.html#mac

And, here are the grades:
http://www.stassen.com/preseason/prediction-accuracy/2018...

Winner for the MAC last year was the Gold Sheet, who nailed the West, and was close on the East. Second place goes to the Conference Media polls with solid picks on both sides of the Conference. As for others, College Football News had the best picks for the East, but struggled in the West. Everyone's favorite, Phil Steele, had solid picks in the MAC West, but not quite at good in the East.

Over the longer term, here are the five year accuracy results, where Athlon is leading the pack:
