I have a different perspective. With all the guards we've signed -- Mitchell, Brogan & D'Augustino -- I think he saw himself sliding further down the bench. When he was recruited, it probably looked like he'd be getting significant playing time his freshman year. Now, not so much. I think that this de-commit is a good sign. It shows that we've recruited guys a cut above what we were recruiting just a few short months ago. I think Boals & Co. have upped their game, and it's time for those who can't measure up to our new standards to either resign themselves to benchwarming for at least a year or two or to seek other venues in which to apply their basketball talents.

I don’t disagree with this assessment. Of course, the big unknown is while we believe Boals and Co. have upped their recruiting game, we won’t truly know until we see these guys perform in Bobcat uniforms.

So I guess signing a letter of intent in 2026 basically means nothing then right?

Someone please explain.

Unfortunately, I believe you are exactly correct. These types of contracts are totally unenforceable under U.S law. They would be enforceable in many other countries, but not here. Years ago the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that this type of "performance contract" was a violation of the prohibition against indentured servitude in the 13th Amendment. The same is true for a coach's contract. The buyout provisions apply to the hiring institution not to the coach, notwithstanding the court case against Geno Ford, which revolved around different pivotal issues and not the 13th Ammendments prohibition of indentured servitude.
