The writer's best point in that piece is that OU admins jumped high before anyone asked them, and that a party has nothing to do with race-based decision making. As I stated before, I really don't think this was a necessary reaction to the federal government statements. But otherwise the dramatization is thick. Reaching to suggest they'll change the name of Templeton-Blackburn and saying "black alumni are no longer welcome on campus." Come on. As part of her childish rants she even says "OU needs to hear from and see alumni of all races..." does she realize the irony in her statement?

Acting like this somehow means the right is against freedom is predictable. Public officials dictating the actions of public institutions is NOT a contradiction to the personal freedom the right champions. Just like when they claimed a years long narrative that the right was "banning books" when in reality they just didn't want inappropriate content included in public school libraries and no one ever suggested banning them. To suggest any of this is an attack of minority groups right to assemble in their personal lives is way off base.

greencat - You're so clearly closed off and unstable regarding politics it is hard to even know where to begin. The statement "All supporters of trump support him blindly and unquestioningly" is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard, and everything that is wrong with political discourse. But you already declared yourself the winner, so I guess that is it. Congratulations.

DCF - If white people are invited, great...I really don't care. It is still called the Black Alumni Reunion and seems to be a bizarre thing for the University to put on. Imagine if your High School did it, wouldn't it be weird? Should your kid's preschool have a black kids only day? I just think it's all weird and counterproductive.

Actually, many white people are invited and included in these events. Speaking from experience. And unlike your meetings, people are actually invited and not forced to attend the bonfire.

Trump supporters agreeing with everything he does or says is true. I’ve experienced it many times in conversations. Look no further than what Marco Rubio has said about Trump in the past and what he says now. It’s like he has a muzzle. He was asked recently if Trump won the 2020 election and he danced around it. Look it up.

Again, any group can gather for whatever reason they feel binds them together. But a public institution making those decisions and distinctions is not something I like to see happen. You've asked who is harmed...no there is no tangible direct harm on the event taking place.

Think it's worth noting that you don't actually feel anybody is harmed here. Particularly in light of your first post in this thread:

Andrew Ruck wrote:
Dividing us by skin color is not something to be celebrated or protected. That's the opposite of Diversity and Inclusion.

I think you're right to call out others here for "dramatization". Alan, Greencat, and others have veered off in weird directions and tried to make this choice representative of all sorts of other things that you'd have to squint super, super hard to form a connection to.

But, for what it's worth, I think you're doing a bit of the same. To a lesser degree. There's no direct harm in holding a Black Alumni weekend, there's nobody directly discriminated against, but here you are still trying to act like it's reflective of some ambiguous, amorphous societal ill. Just doesn't seem particularly helpful.

Andrew Ruck wrote:

To get into the details of this decision, I actually think it is another case of "malicious compliance" where they strive to create the headline to make the legislation look bad and induce rage (mission accomplished).

What gain is there from this "rage"? If confronted with two possibilities:

1) OU did all of this for headlines and rage
2) The federal government provided less that clear guidance on how public universities should operationalize a court decision

I know which I'm going with. I spend a lot of time in my line of work trying to interpret court decisions and understand what that means from a policy standpoint. The government -- at basically every level -- is very bad at this. It's the key reason I'm quite sympathetic to "small government" folks on the right.

And from my standpoint here, it seems downright silly that any policy anywhere should shape a completely harmless alumni weekend.

Andrew Ruck wrote:

I personally took the spirit of the directive from the federal government to be centered on admissions, scholarships, aid and other direct benefits. I highly doubt social gatherings would have jeopardized anything, but I suppose time will tell.

I think you're probably right, but this administration is now communicating to private companies that they have to drop DEI policies. It's far from clear how they intend to govern here, and I don't think it's some massive overreaction (and certainly not "malicious compliance to create rage") to choose to be particularly risk-averse here.

What percentage of those white supremacists and neo-nazis voted for Kamala Harris?

Just a ballpark estimation would work.

Please, keep calling your opposition Nazis and Klan members. It has worked out so well for you guys as more and more minorities shift to the right.

2020 to 2024:

+27 Hispanic
+17 Black
+11 Asian
+3 White

The only demographic to shift to the left was old white guys so at least you got that going for you.

Please also keep putting the burden of every single position on every Trump voter, another great strategy working well for you. Rubio is a politician, they ALL do this crap. I'm talking voters, there many millions that voted for Trump but do not blindly support everything he does.

Sure, but I've made the point that although the event itself isn't a directly harmful thing, I find the existence and prevalence of these types of events counterproductive to race relations and harmful in the long run.

You may be right there was not malicious intent, but I don't think it has to be all #1 or #2 in the list of options and think it can be both. I think a distaste in the administration can cause a dramatic and emotional response, and even if only subconsciously, they run to the sad choice where they can use someone they dislike as a scapegoat. They probably thought they could just blame Trump and everyone accept it and direct their rage on them, and it isn't really working out entirely that way.

Every time either party wins in any sort of race, there's a big rush to assume that voter shifts are permanent. The reality is that both parties are absolutely nonsense right now, and nobody is happy with how either governs. Presidential approval rates are always underwater, congressional approval rates are always under water, and the best thing you can be from a popularity standpoint is out of power.

Think it's a fool's errand to try and apply any of this to political strategy, and there's a ton of cognitive bias to try and ascribe it to a thing you don't like that Billy just did. We all dislike a whole bunch of things Billy does. I don't know that many of them are the reason that voter sentiment shifted last presidential cycle.

I'm not really following. Didn't the (OU) administration make the choice the Trump admin would likely support here? It's a little odd to me that you think this is a way of sticking it to the Trump admin, and not kissing the ring.

The entire tech industry has met with the admin and then -- in a massive coincidence -- removes reference to DEI publicly and states their intent to move back to "merit based hiring." Seems like working the refs to me, and I wouldn't be to fast to assume that's not what OU is doing here, too.

To go one further, Rubio has years of tape being anti Russian. Now he's breaking out the lipstick for the rainbow kiss.

My dislike for Trump has nothing to do with politics. I’ve voted for more republicans than democrats in my voting history. I vote for the person, not the party. When I began reading about his business failures about 30 years ago, I formed my opinion of him. He has convinced his backers that the government has their hands in our pockets, but based on his slimy business history I believe he has his hands in ours. Some day it will see the light of day. The following will find out soon enough he is not for the little guy.

Black people had much to overcome. If we can have an event that celebrates their success I’m for it.

trump has now declared that NOT buying a tesla is illegal despite the Supreme Court ruling that boycotts largely fall under the domain of free speech.

One more thing his sheep won't condemn.

Yeah they still coming. Many already paid for rooms and can’t get out of it. Doesn’t mean the sting ain’t any worse that their university pulled the rug from them.

Huge anti-trump and anti-musk protest on East State Street right now. Hundreds of folks during Mom's weekend. Traffic is backed up to Village Bakery like the good old days when East State was a two lane street.

Great to hear, Alan.

Also a (surprisingly) nice crowd for the Hands Off protest in Newark, the county seat of right-leaning Licking County.
