Kirby Hocutt was a great fundraiser too. So what is your point?

He didn't raise enough to salvage the men's track team, did he? A great fundraiser would have been able to do that. He wasn't a great fundraiser in my book.

Kirby "Whole Cut" Hocutt, dumped a bunch of sports while he was here: I believe Men's swimming and diving, men's track and field, lacrosse, and also I think tennis. One of my lacrosse students had just finished a 10 month rehab and given clearance to play just before the season was about to begin, the same day " Whole Cut" dropped the sport. She and the team were devastated. The team could have played that season but chose not to for obvious reasons.

Life happens, and as SBH stated, Kirby did what he was told to do by his bosses. And FYI, tennis was cut over 30+ years ago, I believe 33 years ago to be exact, which makes Kirby even more impressive since he’d have been in high school when he cut tennis.

Kirby also cut men's soccer back in 1980 after players vandalized their own bus.

And that made him a weak AD. He did not have the maturity to chart a course and make a case for it with upper-level administration. He was a complete doofus, and did irreparable harm to OHIO.

For a doofus, he's done quite well. I was president of the Green and White Club when Kirby was here and found him to be communicative and above board in all of our dealings. He actually called me when I was in Dallas as a courtesy to let me know about the impending program cuts before they happened.

As I said earlier, he's the poster child for the Peter Principle.

You never cease to amaze me at your abilities to be aloof. You really think that Kirby cut three teams all on his own? That it was his idea to cut these teams, and he alone pushed the plan and approved it all on his own? The AD is no more than a foot solider to his/her bosses when it comes to these decisions.

I don't get how you see Hocutt as a poster child for the Peter Principle. The Peter Principle says that employees seem to move up the hierarchical ladder until they reach a position that is higher than their competence level after success at a lower level. It does not mean that someone continues to be elevated once they hit that level of incompetence. Their promotions stop once they hit that level of incompetence.

Kirby has been promoted continuously, starting first as AD here at OHIO and then (though same title, much larger budget) AD at Miami (FL), and now AD for more than a decade at Texas Tech. He has held a number of high positions in national committees as well. I'd say he continues to be promoted, so, according to the decision-makers, he has yet to hit his level of incompetence.

If you read what I said earlier, I thought he was a rare exception that reached his level of incompetence at OHIO and still continued to spread his incompetence at higher levels. Take a look at some of the Texas Tech fan sites. You'll see whole threads about why Hocutt should get fired.

Being the poster child for something precludes the use of an asterisk and a whole bunch of qualifiers. So, OCF, you're wrong.

That’s the only logical choice at this juncture, heh?

And why is that - because the other candidate is a "gal?"

Sorry, you missed my satire. You have to have read earlier exchanges between SBH and I.

Sorry Carl, this was your post, the third one in the thread, long before any discussion between you and SBH.

I agree the dude from Marshall appears the best of the lot, and seems more academically oriented. The gal from Louisville would be my second choice, because it looks like she would understand our area and its culture.

Yes, and I stand by that comment, but the proximate context was that I was ribbing SBH over an earlier exchange about various forms of logic. Are you objecting to my use of the word “gal”? I called the Marshall candidate a “dude.” I wasn’t particularly standing on any type of ceremony in my reference to either one. Just being my normal colloquial self.

Really a nice opening statement. As I said earlier in this thread, she was my second choice because she'd understand our area and our culture. That comes through clearly in this statement. She also seemed to have a sincerity in her voice that I liked. Overly, she made a good first impression. Let's hope, as another poster said, that she turns out to be our best president ever!

I'm convinced a crow, dolphin or even an elephant could be trained and be successful at a college presidency these days with all of the executive administrators around to do the work.

To compare the challenge of the OU presidency today to the days of Alden, Ping or the more conteporary ones like Glidden or McDavis when the university was still developing isn't a real comparison. The university has fully renovated at this point with the remaining buildings obligated and has as many scholarship programs as what it could possibly need. Endowment is 5 times what it was when McDavis started and 10-12 times from the level when Glidden arrived. Hardly anything new had been built in 30 years when Glidden first arrived.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

I don't buy that. The challenges are still there and are substantial. From marketing the university to a shrinking number of Ohio high school grads to enhancing out of state recruiting to the need to constantly increase fundraising to keep up with our peers to attempting to manage the 800 pound gorilla up in Columbus along with dealing with a grossly overbuilt state system. There's plenty for the President to do.
