Our backcourt next year will be Jaya and Yaya. The band could come up with some fun routines off of that. How about a takeoff on Lee Dorsey's "sitting in lala waiting for my yaya".

Yep!

Checking women's scores today, the G.W.Carver College Cougars (you earn a star if you ever heard of them) lose to Georgia State 133-15. But they did come on strong in the second half by tripling their first half score of 60-5. I was curious to see how they've fared in other games but the website does not provide their schedule, but it does report the men are currently 0-20. Go Cougars!

There's an indirect connection of this college with Athens. The full name of the College is George Washington Carver College, named for the head the agricultural department at Tuskegee Institute. Tuskegee Institute (now University) was started by Booker T. Washington and his second wife, Olivia Davidson, who was a major fundraiser for the start up of Tuskegee Institute, which likely would not have survived without her work in establishing the financial foundation for the fledgling school . Olivia's family moved from the South to southeastern Ohio -- first to Ironton and Gallipolis, and then to Albany, on the western edge of Athens County (Lee Township). In 1886 she married Washington in the City of Athens. There is an historical marker in front of the house on Washington Street where the marriage took place. Previously, Olivia's role in the founding of Tuskegee Institute was downplayed and forgotten because of her gender; recently historians have put her pivotal role in a more accurate perspective.

Couple of corrections, it was Georgia Southern that beat Carver Cougars
Would be awfully hard for this school that is knows as the Carver Cougars to be founded by Booker T Washington, since he passed away in 1915, and Carver College Cougars (as named when it was founded) was not established until 1943 as the Carver Bible Institute. Yes the college was named after G.W. Carver, but that is about as far as your story goes in regards to the school. Of interesting note, at one time the Men's team and the Women's team were coached by the same person. Today, this is still a seminary school with a full time enrollment of 150 students.

I didn't say Carver College was founded by BTW. I said that Carver College was named after the head of the agricultural department (GW Carver) at BTW's school (Tuskegee Institute).

With a short bench, ladies play tough at Minnesota, losing 99-93. Only 5 players score, all in double digits. Johnson with 21, Hooks nets 20.

And, they were down big early and stormed back to come within 3 points with under a minute left. There's lots of fight and heart on this team. I think they'll do well this year.

Sometimes there are bad losses and sometimes good losses. This was a good loss, playing even against a Big 10 team on their home court with not much of a bench. Bodes well for what they can accomplish in the MAC. Go OHIO!

Funny on the mens side, we lose to traditional power in the SEC Kentucky and it’s gloom and doom, lack of depth, LSU, it’s all these players are killing us. Yet on the women’s side it’s nothing but back slaps and hand shakes. Why the double standard. Why is the expectation lower?

Until you can point to the same person making these inverse points, your comparison is ineffectual. But I would say the doom and gloom high standard (dare I say bandwagoners) fans don't pay attention to the women's team at all, let alone comment on them.

The women won't have the luxury of playing in a down MAC. Its going to take a good effort to win most of their conference games. A lot of the team seems to be out and in a lot of cases we don't know why. There isn't much depth. They haven't had any luck since winning 30 games a few years ago.

There really isn't anything wrong with the top half of te MAC on the men's side. The top 6 looks pretty normal. It is the bottom half that usually stands out with respect to other conferences. It looks awful. 12-6 often won the MAC outright. It might take 17-3 or 16-4.

That's very interesting defensive numbers. We force a lot of turnovers, but not a lot of bad shots apparently.

I thought so too. I haven’t watched many womens games this year, so this is a total guess. Maybe they have the most streaks and turn overs because they play aggressive and give up some easy baskets when they miss?

It looks like six players are out right now. Ohio would seem to be down Kroll, Guice, K. Hale, J. Hale, Garnett, and Pope. I think we know Kroll and Guice would be playing a lot and probably starting if they were able to go. Neither has played but that isn't surprising. There are so few bigs that Garnett and Pope would have to be getting minutes, at least one of them, if they could go. Antonova did play today but only 2 minutes and it seems Garnett and Pope are ahead in the rotation. If neither one played it is reasonable to assume that both cannot go. I am not sure if we have seen either Hale sister this season and if we have it has been quite a while. I don't think there has been any indication of what might be wrong with either and with so few journalists covering Ohio sports right now nobody is asking about injury status of women's basketball players.

Pretty bizarre to have our shooting guard lead the conference in assists far ahead of our point guard.

#1 in offense and not so great in defense passes the eye test for me. My impression from last year into this year is the D sells out for steals too much and often gets burnt. We are forcing a high turnover rate at the expense of giving up a high point per possession.

Cruising today behind stiffling defense, 14 steals!

I see the FIU games yesterday and today were cancelled. Was there supposed to be a 3rd game for Ohio tomorrow or was this all that was planned from the get go?

No, for some reason there were four teams invited and each team only played two. Nor was it an actual tournament. This isn't a final between the two winners yesterday. We were schedules to play UML and Binghamton. FIU set it up that way. If we were healthy I don't think hardly any mid-majors would want to play us. Maybe that had something to do with it.

I assume that with this being in Miami, there seeming to be no webcast, and with the men playing concurrently that nobody saw any of this. It seems that they played good pressure defense. The shooting was pretty bad. They were 7 of 32 from three. 17 or 29 from the line is ugly. It also seems that only 7 players played today. It has to be tough to play back-to-back games with such a short bench. If Ohio women's basketball has an all time starting 5 Hooks and Johnson might both be on it. As long as they have them and 4th year starter in Burris healthy with 4 or 5 other scholarship players and stay out of foul trouble they are going to have a shot in all the MAC games. Here is hoping to some recovry in the second half and better luck with this in 22-23.
