I wouldn't have thought of UT-Arlington as a MVC fit but I guess it makes sense thinking about it more ($)

I doubt we'd be involved because of football, but maybe worth filing a public records request just to be on the safe side lol

I've seen crazier things happen.

It's the WAC that needs to expand. Talk about a shadow of it's former self.

Dixie State College? Terlingstone University?

Not exactly Boise State or BYU anymore. They shouldn't have had an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament this last time. Did you see Grand Canyon's (cough-cough) "strength" of schedule?

They'll expand once they get their footing again.

I'm sure you know it's Tarleton State....did you know that Billy Gillispie is their new head basketball coach? Hope his tenure there is less difficult than in other places he's landed.

How would a person know what the heck the correct spelling is for whoever they are? I asked a person where "Dixie State College" was and he tried to tell me it was in either Idaho or Utah. Can that even be possible?

Grand Canyon played "Bethesda College" (twice!) and it turns out that not only is Bethesda NOT in Maryland, it's in an office building somewhere in California and is not in the NCAA, the NAIA, or any other known commodity of athletics. The "team" photo looked like a bunch of guys rounded up from the local YMCA.

Dixie State is located in St. George, UT. I have 2 brothers that used to live outside St. George at different times. Always enjoyed flying in to Vegas and driving 2 hours up I-5 into southwest Utah, where St. George is located and one of the most beautiful parts of OUr country. Within 1 to 3-hour drives of Zion, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, etc. . .

I believe Ohio's own Terren Harbut played there back when it was a junior college.

You won't need to remember Dixie State much longer. The state passed a law to require it changed.

Grand Canyon also played some bigtime schools like Arizona State, Colorado, etc. And I hear you about Bethesda, but these types of weird scheduling were COVID related. Quite a few mid and low majors in the south were playing multiple games against teams like Carver Bible College and St. Louis School of Pharmacy-- just to get games against somebody.

Just looked it up. The name Dixie State does not refer to the Old Confederacy. Apparently, Bingham Young once referred to SW Utah as the "Dixie of Utah," and the name stuck. In my mind, that context puts the whole name thing in a different perspective, but they've made their decision and are going to change the name. I must admit when I saw that name I assumed it was somewhere in a rural section of Alabama or Mississippi. At least the name change will prevent those of us ignorant of Utah history from making that kind of geographical error in the future.

With the WAC it reminds me of the days when schools would "shuffle up" with the hope of getting into a better conference situation. You are seeing more on the lower end of the division 1 spectrum these days as the high mid major ranks have become more set. WAC was a major conference at time so it has a rep factor going for it to appeal for new members.

MAC has rep for having academic standards for joining which appealed to some in its backyard. Akron wanted to move up to be part of it rather than a DII conference.
