So far, at the combine he's 7th overall in lane agility (10.82 sec) and 11th overall in the shuttle run (3.08 sec). He's also 24th overall in the three-quarter sprint (3.13 sec), 25th overall in standing vertical leap (30.5 in.), and 20th overall in max vertical leap (38.5 in.).

We will get by.
We will get by.

There's no question the kid has the skills needed for the NBA.

My question is,is he currently physically able to take the "pounding" of going up against some of the monsters in the NBA night after night.

I don't think his stock would drop if he stayed in college and put some more
"meat" on his frame.

Jalen Green’s listed at 6’6” 180 pounds and he’s projected as the #2 or #3 overall pick in most mock drafts. I don’t think Jason’s size will be considered detrimental.

I have to think if he's told he's a first rounder, Jason leaves. If he's told 2nd round, it comes down to does he come back and work on his game to try to get into Round 1 or does he roll the dice? There's no way to know what's going on inside the tiger's head. We don't have the technology.

The ball moves so much better when JP is running point, compared to the ORU guy

My guess is ... if a team really likes him, and says they will give him a guaranteed contract as a 2nd round pick, he might jump at it.

2nd round NBA picks are not locked in for guarantee $$$ like first rounders.

Short of that, might as well wrap up that degree and have one last dance with his boys!!!

The way he performed this week, I think he's top half of the second round at worst. That does not come with a guaranteed contract necessarily, but 90% of players chosen that high do get a couple years guaranteed. More and more, I'm thinking he won't be back at Ohio. He had a typical Preston game today with 14 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds.

From SI.com (June 24):

https://www.si.com/nba/2021/06/25/nba-combine-notebook-po...

Jason Preston, Ohio

Preston was the standout in the day’s second game, putting together an exceptional stretch of play in the second half and standing out as the best passer on any of the four combine teams. He finished with 10 points and just one assist, but played a huge role in facilitating for his team, and his unselfishness was contagious. This year’s draft class is relatively thin on quality point guards, and Preston’s maturity and pass-first approach was a real separator from most of the other guards we saw take the floor Thursday.

It’s been a positive few days at the combine for Preston overall, as he’s flashed underrated athletic ability, played active defense, and shot the ball better than some teams expected in drills. He thinks the game a step or two ahead of his peers, and has the size and skill level to profile pretty cleanly as a capable NBA backup. There’s some untapped upside if his shot and thin frame continue to improve. Preston is likely playing his way into a Top 40 selection at this rate, and will draw interest in the late first round.

I think Jason gets drafted and goes to the NBA. That's what my gut says now. But here's my question. What if he hears from draft experts that he's got a lot of intangibles, but they want to see him perform against top talent all year long? Could they encourage him to transfer to a Power school? Could the NBA scouts use their connections to arrange that, making a trip by Preston into the portal quite brief? It's likely all about what advice he's getting right now as he goes through the process and I think it's quite possible he's getting lots of different perspectives.

NBA Scout: You're likely at top 50 pick right now. Maybe a year of development gets you into the top 30. However, I think a year of grinding through an ACC season could move you possibly into the lottery.

If he hears something like that, wouldn't he be a fool not to listen?

From ESPN. Preston is mentioned about 2/3 into the article and it's all positive. States that he's played himself into early or mid-2nd round:

https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/story/_/id/31721274/nba-...

Everything I've read this week is that he's improved his stock. He's likely to get drafted. He's likely to get some guaranteed money. This is a confident, selfless kid who would be an asset to any NBA team.

My gut...Thanks for the run as a Bobcat Jason. It was a pleasure to have you a part of the program.

I've called this scenario out a few times on other threads. Seems like a very realistic situation to me and would put everybody in an uncomfortable position.

Boals on one hand wants the best for JP but will undoubtedly recruit him to stay with the pitch "you can still develop into a first round pick in Athens." We've seen how that plays out.

JP will have a very difficult decision to make regardless, unless he sneaks into the first round or first few picks in the second round.

#43 to New Orleans......he gone.

He's got a fan for life here. What an ambassador for the university. Incredible recruiting tool for Coach Boals moving forward.

Excited to see what Sears will do for this team moving forward. Now the question....does Boals bring in another PG this summer out of the portal?

Anybody assuming the promise of a second round pick will automatically result in Preston leaving is a little bit naive to the realities of the NBA. Looking at a sample of data between 2003-2013:

26.1% of second round picks never play a minute in the NBA. Only 16.7% are on an NBA roster for 3 full seasons.

2nd round salaries aren't guaranteed, and though you can negotiate guarantees it's far from certain. Once you're drafted, your rights are owned by a single team, and your negotiating leverage is all but gone. They don't want to give you 3 years guaranteed, where are you going to go? Europe?

To leave, Preston should either have a 1st round promise, or a promise of multiple guaranteed years.

If he wants to transfer, he’d have to be in the portal by EOB Thursday, right? (At least if the article i read, stating a transfer deadline of July 1st for this year, is still correct)

What also needs considered is that the draft is not some queue where once this year's group move on, the line simply moves forward. There is zero guarantee that Preston will improve his standing. In the meantime, more and more 2nd round picks are receiving guaranteed money - many for multiple years if drafted in the first half of the 2nd round (45 or better).

https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/11/2020-nba-draft-pick-s...

And the trend had been around for years from 2013 to 2018 - Of the 72 college players selected between 31st and 45th, 65 of them (90%) — received a guaranteed contract from an NBA team. Many for multiple years.

A single year guaranteed contract pays over $800,000. If Preston is drafted in the top half of the 2nd round and only plays in the G league next year, two things are certain. He will get at least a single year guaranteed money (and most likely two years) and he will be a better player at the end of the year than if he stayed and played in Athens.

All indications are he has played himself into the top half of the 2nd round. If that holds true, he's gone... he will and should move on.

If many believe that players are exploited by only getting an education from their college playing days, wouldn't transferring to another institution simply allow the player to be exploited for another year? "Go on---take the money and run".

Serious question ....

Can somebody compare OSU's Duane WAshington to JPreston for me as both seem to be 2nd round point guards likely being measured by the same teams. I despise the Blackeyes and know very little about them.

In the scenario outlined above, there's only guaranteed money if he goes to the ACC.

I don't think you're making the point you think you're making.

Jason has earned this so I hope he chooses to go. It is his time and he will shine! Then Boals can go about the business of getting us an athletic Huerter type of guy. Big with 3 point shooting! We have bigs and guards. We need 6 foot 6 or bigger who can shoot. I am sure there are some in portal waiting.
