I'm guessing this is a feeling out move by him and I'll be shocked if he stays in the draft.

Smart move and get the grade that will tell him to put on 15-20 pounds...learn how to get out of double-teams 35 feet away from the basket and improve the jumper. Get the grade JP and work on these things and you'll become a first round pick in 2022. Looking forward to having JP back for one more season.

Look at our recruiting page and I think it's pretty clear that Boals feels he'll be back.

Would be interesting to see what would happen if he gets his grade and one of the pieces of advice is to face stiffer competition. If he gets that, does he look to play next year in a larger conference?

Brought this up on another thread after we got knocked out of the tourney.

I believe that will most definitely be brought up and can still see a transfer situation unfold.

When is the transfer deadline?

I don't think lack of higher quality competition is his downfall, and I think a transfer "up" is more likely to hurt his stock than help it. His strengths are strong against anyone in the country, but his weaknesses are weak against anyone in the country. He could stand to gain another 10 lbs, he could stand to add a step back jumper to his repertoire, his on ball defense needs a lot of work. He can work on all of those at Ohio.

Absolutely right. The tough thing for mid-major guys is getting their names out there and getting recognition. He was able to do that with the Illinois game, his MAC Tourney and then the NCAA Tourney. If he goes somewhere else he's just point guard Jason Preston along with these other 5 start guys. At OU, he's The Jason Preston and if he can take the team to the next level (Sweet 16) then he will get even more run. Now, if he is told he will make money somewhere, anywhere, I can see this young man leaving and he will be supported by me 100 percent. If he transfers, I will still like the kid, but I won't root for him wearing someone else's jersey. I also guess I'm not as worried as I was when Jaaron left because we had NO ONE behind him. We have Mark Sears baby!

Let's hope our other Jason can give him some "grass-isn't-always-greener" advice.

His performance last season put him "on the radar".
His presence will be enhanced by who he has gets to meet by declaring.

I would think that, if people NBA think he has NBA potential, they will be following his performance, where ever he's playing.

I have to think someone is going to see his potential and snag him in the second round. Good for him.

Since 2nd round picks in the NBA don't have guaranteed beyond their first season, if he projects in round 2, he'll come back.

This was explored in an earlier thread - If he can get into the top half of the 2nd round, the money is often guaranteed and for multiple years.

Agree - I think it's also safe to say that in 2020-21, if there is a player that has NBA potential, he's on the radar regardless of the league he's in, or the success of his team in the NCAA tournament. That didn't hurt his cause for sure, but NBA scouts knew about him before the Illinois game, the MAC Tournament, and March Madness. That's what they are paid to do.

"Transferring up" only works if the player goes to a program where he would actually fill a need. Jaaron Simmons thought it would help him get to the NBA. But Michigan had a pro-quality guard, so he spent his one year there (2017-18) mostly sitting the bench. He didn't get a call from the NBA and spent a year in Switzerland. In 2019 he was back at Mich as its graduate manager and is now its video analyst.

I think we may be using the word guaranteed differently. First rounders are guaranteed at least three years.

While some second round picks are able to negotiate longer deals before signing, nothing's guaranteed.

On same page. Point for Jason is that if he can get drafted in the top half of the second round recent years show he will most likely get a contract with at least two years guaranteed. It is not set be the collective bargaining, but recent trends. The challenge is to get a team to assure him they'll take him. A tough challenge, but can't evaluate without first declaring,

Glad he's going through the draft circuit. Basically is free coaching from NBA coaches, going up against better players, and ultimately can show off what he can do. And as already mentioned, he maintains his eligibility. If he finds out that a team really wants him in the draft, he'll stay in. If not, gets free advice on what he needs to do and gets a chance to bulk up and go again.

And if he transfers, he transfers. It happens. But if we get him back.....mother of god

Jason certainly isn't a first rounder at this point in time. A lot of his flaws were exposed in Indy. That being said, there's a ton of upside there. The LaMelo Ball comparisons exist for a reason.

He absolutely needs to add 10-15 lbs. Needs to figure out how to split a double team and get the first step to turn the corner against bigger faster defenders he'll see every night in NBA. Needs to work on his shot (3 and FT) and adding a step back midrange option to his floater would be deadly. Definitely needs work on his on ball defense as well.

Real question is, does an NBA team like the upside enough to deal with the shortcomings. Next year will be a developmental year for JP one way or the other. Either he has too much to work on and he'll come back to OU to try to improve on it or some NBA team takes a 2nd round flier on him and uses his rookie year as a redshirt thinking they can fix/mold those deficiencies better in house than from college. That would require a 2 year commitment from them though. One year to develop and then year two to "show me". Again, all depends on if they like the upside enough to take a 2 year gamble.

Yup - If I'm an NBA team I'm strongly considering this. Give him a two year commitment. Have him train under my staff and work with my strength and conditioning program - all the while letting him play in the G-league. Very affordable investment.

Main reason? He has a trait you can't teach - he makes his teammates better.

I’m just glad we have Sears on the team(I hope), because he can step right in. He’s a good one.
I would expect Preston to came back, but nowadays who really knows what will happen. Regardless of where Jason ends up, he’s brought some excitement back to men’s basketball.

What kind of contract are we talking about based on recent years/examples? I'm simply not familiar with the NBA enough to know.

This is what keeps running through my head. Even without Preston, this team will be very good. With him...what you said. :)

Last year, CJ Elleby was drafted by Portland 46th overall - 16th in the 2nd round (halfway through). He signed a 2 year / $2,416,291 - all of it guaranteed. Two foreign players drafted ahead of him in the round did not sign (drafted for their rights). Two American players drafted above him in the round did not get any guarantee. The other 12 players drafted ahead of him signed more lucrative contracts with guaranteed money. Most drafted after him did not receive contracts with guaranteed money.

Obviously, if Preston can get that kind of money, he's most likely gone - and no one would fault him. But needs to be assured to be drafted by the midpoint of the 2nd round to make it worthwhile. Have not seen him in top 46, so he has to catch someone's eye. But as they say, only need one to want you. Agree with most, he is simply taking advantage of the process at this point... but who knows.
