Since basketball is a team game not an individual sport, and since team chemistry and how each man (or woman) interacts on the court with fellow teammates is what wins or loses games, I'll just name the starting five on OHIO's best team ever -- the Elite Eight squad of 1964: Jerry Jackson, Chad Gill Sr., Mike Haley, Don Hilt and Paul Storey. Next up would be the starting five on the 2012 Sweet 16 team. Well, at least that's another way to look at the question. Just trying to add a different perspective. Feel free to disagree.

Did he produce? His points per game went down every year. EMU had a .500 record in the MAC in his 4 seasons with only one season above .500. He wasn't even that good of a shot blocker. His best season he was 5th in the MAC. Keep in mind that that is in the West. I can think of 25 guys who played in the last 10 years I would put ahead of him. He was so easy to take out of a game by good teams. Here are his MAC tournament games from his Junior and Senior seasons:

Sr - Ball State 40min, 4 pts, 9 reb, 0 asst
Jr - Toledo 26min, 8 pts, 5 reb, 0 asst
Jr - Akron 27min, 5 pts, 2 reb, 0 asst

He could have been great, he wasn't.

That's fine, and you give fair points. Name 2-3 of those guys you'd take. I can name one: Tony Campbell.

All but Chad Gill are in OU's Athletics Hall of Fame.

Hmm. . . wonder why he's not. Seems like he should be.

Brandon Hunter, Leon Williams, Jerome Tillman just to name Ohio bigs. Maybe I'm hard on IV because he came in with such hype but was only dominate in short stretches. Zeke Marshall was a similar player and came in with similar hype and while he wasn't as strong early in his career he got better every year. I would have like to have seen what IV could have done with a coach who could instill some kind of discipline.

I always thought IV was ill suited for the program he was in. I think it became a case of a kid with immense potential talent that never quite achieved that talent. It almost became comical at how quickly he could be baited and essentially take himself out of games thru stupid fouls, etc

If you consider advanced stats, Leon Williams looks very good.

I suppose that's possible, as they have made that a requirement. I guess I had just assumed he had graduated, but you know what they say about ASS-U-ME! ;-)

And Nate Thurmond out of Bowling Green? Great collegiate and NBA player and even better person off the court.

Edit: Sorry Buckeye to Bobcat, I see you had Thurmond in your Top 5. Totally agree. NT doesn’t get enough love. And a NE Ohio native to boot.

Has your State Rep graduated from Ohio?

Agreed - he was immensely talented, but the lack of discipline, really in the whole program, set him back. Same issue could be said about Ray Lee, and a few others.

I like Leon as an All-MAC 5. I also don't view him as having been a great defender and/or potential shot blocker. Offensively, he was as dominant as there was. Frankly, I think if Ohio would have had better PG play in all four of Leon's years, he would have had even better numbers.

BS in mathematics. Probably could teach you a thing or two about the calculus of variations.

Speaking of advanced stats, I sometimes wonder had Tony Campbell not been hurt if he would have won back-to-back MAC POYs. He was ranked second in the nation in Hollinger's PER at one point.
