I think only time will answer your question. If he is a successful head coach, he will be looked on as a successful assistant who rose in the ranks and was worthy of the promotion. If he's not successful as a head coach folks will say he was never cut out to be a head coach and will question whether he just got the job because of connections. Hindsight is always perfect in these kinds of matters.

I'm reminded of my own tangential involvement in the hiring of Cleve Bryant. I was one of the first to suggest to the AD that we had this alumnus who had been a fabulous football player for OHIO, was now a great assistant coach at North Carolina, where he was credited with several recruiting coups, and would be one of the first black head coaches in Division 1 (second or third, if memory serves). I could see no downside to hiring this man as our head football coach. Well, hindsight paints a far different picture. If Cleve had, indeed, been a great head coach and OHIO had won championships with him at the helm (and he hadn't had off-the-field issues), I would have been a coach scouting genius. As it is, I belong in the Hall of Shame for Alumni Stupidity. [Let me ad, that the AD was smart enough to ignore my phone calls and memos and personal discussion and to recommend the hiring to Glenn Mason, only to be overruled by President Ping.)

Sounds like your involvement in destroying Ohio football for a generation was more than merely tangential. Perhaps you were really working on behalf your beloved Herd? Was the Killarney Bowl your idea, BTW? Still sore about that one.

That's a huge jump after one year as a head coach at a .500 D2 school.

All seriousness aside, as Steve Allen used to say, I too was signed up for the Irish Potato Famine Bowl (or whatever it was to be called). I will say to this day I'm grateful to President Ping for refunding our deposit from private university funds (not state dollars) even though they got nothing back from the huckster who had promoted the concept. My wife and I took the refund and scheduled a trip to Germany instead. We've yet to make it Ireland, one of my ancestral homes. I would personally be much sorer about it if the university hadn't refunded our money.

Can't say I've ever heard of this. Some sort of fraudulent football game to be played in Ireland?

A sad, embarrassing tale of malpractice by the OU Alumni Association and Ohio Athletics during the reign of Hank McElhaney - an AD who had a huge Duke University banner on the wall of his office in the Convo.

We were to play Ball State in Killarney, Ireland. Multiple participants warned that the promoter was not fulfilling his responsibilities after accepting our payments yet both universities ignored the warnings. Eight days from departure they learned he had run off with the money and had never even put deposits on the flights and hotel. A Ball State alum died of a massive stroke when he was informed of the news by telephone.

I finally did make it to Ireland two years ago - what an unbelievable place. If the Orange Menace somehow gets re-elected, I'm going to move there.

It is hard to deny that Will Ryan's name played a big role in getting this job. But given it is at a UW branch school, it is a reasonable argument that it is a smart move for both them and Will. More power to them both.

Still no details on the scandals involved, and how the scam artist was able to pull this off. As I recall, the university was never able to recovery any money from him. Perhaps they did years later, and I missed that followup story.

I still have the t-shirt from that bowl---didn't choose to go but a friend working a summer job found a trove of them squirreled away a year or so later.

It would have been nice if they had at least sent the victims a t-shirt. I would have saved it for posterity.

Following the trip cancellation, I left several messages for Harold McElhaney but received no reply. So a few weeks later, after the 'Cats had lost in embarrassing fashion at Youngstown State, I tracked him down outside the stadium and really lit into him. He later sent me a note of apology. I and other alums had been warning the AD and Alumni Assn that the promoter was not properly crediting our payments and had not provided travel documents. They told us not to worry about it - they were monitoring the situation very closely. Obviously not true. A lot of amateurs in Athens back then.

I am very, very disappointed that this story had not been told earlier on this board. At the time disappointing, I’m sure. With time, pretty hilarious.

And a South Florida promoter during the tail end of the Miami Vice cocaine days. What could possibly go wrong?
