Yesterday Mark Wagoner of Maumee became the first in Ohio to die from covid-19. For one season - my soph year, his senior - we were football teammates at Shelby High School.

Mark went on to earn bachelor and J.D. degrees at Ohio Northern where he played football. On the field he combined superior speed with strength. SHS won Northern Ohio League titles in both Mark's junior and senior seasons.

He contracted the virus while in California and died soon after returning to Ohio. At this moment, I don't know where Mark was in California.

Coincidentally, I just returned from California on the 11th. Where I was - Newport Beach and Santa Catalina Island - there had been no reported cases. Not sure if there have been since I returned.

Sorry for your loss

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes
