Erica Johnson is having a Lebron game and Barker is stroking it too.

Johnson scored 32 points to help Ohio win 85-79. The Bobcats went up by 17 in the first half and led by 12 in the 4th quarter before Northern Illinois made it a little interesting down the stretch with hot shooting throughout. Huskies were 15 of 29 on 3s, most of them by Woods and Nikitinaite, and they also got 17 points and 17 rebounds from Davis before she fouled out in only 25 minutes. All of that, and the Bobcats still won on the road. Katie Barker's own shooting (5 of 8 on 3s) helped a lot. Burris and Burke both had 12 points, though Burke's shooting struggled again. Beck also did a pretty good job with some extended minutes, scoring 9 points.

This may be getting way ahead of things, but does anyone else think Erica has WNBA potential?

I predicted her freshman year that she'd make the All America team by her senior year, so I'd say yes to your question.

She does have sort of a "WNBA look" to her game. Her versatility is a plus, since she can handle well enough to play point as well as shooting guard. That floater/teardrop shot she continues to develop can defeat a lot of bigs, and her high-arcing threes are not only accurate, but hard to block. Best of all from a pro standpoint, she's an efficient scorer. CMU's Presley Hudson and Buffalo's Cierra Dillard were great MAC players who both got training camp looks last year, but they were both cut, in part because they were seen as volume shooters. If you need to take 20 shots to get 20 points, you're not going to make a WNBA team. Johnson got 32 on just 16 shot attempts last night, which is about as productive as it gets.

Minuses may be that she's on the wrong side of 6' tall, has an injury history, and plays for a mid-major. Very few MAC players have been drafted by the league, and I think only two have made it onto a regular season roster. There are only 144 roster spots in the entire league, and most of those are of course taken by veterans.

If she thinks she has a shot, she might be well served by exploring a graduate transfer option to a P5 school after next season. Proving you can do it at that level would attract more attention than another dominant season in the MAC.

She would need to steadily improve over the next 2.5 seasons and cap with a big senior season. Namely, her outside shot needs to be greater than it already is. She is a treasure to have but keep in mind there are only 12 WNBA teams.

Solid home win today by the women over BGSU. Everyone had a good game. Only negative was a stretch in the second quarter where the defense was lackadaisical. Coach Bolden brought that to their attention, shall we say.

For as much as there is to love about what Bob has brought to this program, I cringe when we go into stall ball/clock burning mode so quickly in the 4th quarter like we did on Saturday. We stopped looking for quality shots and started milking clock with 3-4 minutes to play, and it allowed BG to make some quick buckets and really cut into the lead. Fortunately, Erica made a big 3 to stop the bleeding, but we stopped looking for quality shots to milk clock and we lost a lot of the lead in that stretch. It's happened a lot these past few years and I've never liked it. It nearly cost us against Purdue at home last year.

Home game against Akron tonight. Massey has the Bobcats with an 86% chance of winning, predicted score 75-63. But the Zips are a very experienced team, with five seniors, four of whom start. Ohio will be outsized in the post (as always), as Akron starts 6'2" Haliegh Reinoehl together with 6'1" Caitlyn Vari. Reinoehl is a good 3-point shooter, as is guard Shayna Harmon. The rest of the Zips have not shot the three well in MAC play, but Ohio has not defended it well, giving up an average of 11 made threes in conference. Last season, Akron guard Alyssa Clay came off the bench to score 25 in the Convo, including 5-6 from three. This could be a game if she repeats that performance tonight.

Foul trouble was a big issue in the first half especially but throughout the game really. Amani Burke had her best game in a while. Freshman Peyton Guice got extended minutes because of the foul trouble and scored eight points. Now it's the big rematch with Central Michigan on Saturday in Mount Pleasant. Chippewas are still undefeated in the MAC after beating Buffalo in double OT last night.

That was a lot of adversity to deal with last night. Not just foul trouble but foul trouble to the two most important players on the team. Early deficit. Shots simply not falling for our ladies. Guice really helped keep us in the game in the first half, her minutes off the bench were huge. Solid win, let's keep the train rolling.

Anybody have any idea what words were exchanged between the players on that double technical? Erica is usually pretty level-headed. I'm guessing the other player said something off-the-wall to her, and she reacted out of character. On the replay, I really didn't see them saying anything. Didn't really see their lips move. Must have been kind of under the breath kind of thing, unless I totally missed it.

Whatever was said, if it was words that got the call, it must have been good. The T's came immediately. I was on the other side of the Convo so I have no idea.

Bobcats lose in OT at Mt. Pleasant, 92-90. Ohio played without Amani Burke, who did not make the trip due to a death in the family. Caitlyn Kroll started in her place. Erica Johnson came off the bench - Deesh Beck started for her. Ohio did a lot of things right, but CMU outshot them by a ton - 39-64 (60.9%) vs. the Bobcats' 36-86 (41.9%).

Halfway through conference play, it's hard to see a path for Ohio to win the conference. They are three full games behind CMU, plus the Chips hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. The battle may already be for the second place bye.

Ohio plays at EMU tonight in a game that may have long term consequences for the second seed. Ohio and Ball State are both 6-3,but Ohio holds the second seed with the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Cardinals. EMU is at 5-4, so if the Eagles win tonight, they will knock Ohio out of the second spot as the winner of the only meeting between the teams.

EMU is probably the only team in the league that matches up well athletically with Ohio. Or at least they do if they have a full roster. Their leading scorer, grad transfer Areanna Combs, was injured in the Eagles' last game, and was on crutches when the game ended. Their second leading scorer, Aaliyah Stanley, has missed the last two games due to injury. And their center, Autumn Hudson, was on the bench at the end of the last game with a hand injury. But the Eagles are also one of the deepest teams in the league, so even if they are missing some players they are likely to be a tough out.

Hmm . . . I would say that CMU matches up pretty well athletically with Ohio. In fact, I would say they are the cream of the crop in the MAC, and the team that everyone else measures themselves by.

Bobcats cruise with EMU's top 2 scorers out, 75-65. Was a blowout until the closed it a bit in the 4th quarter.

Still not shooting well from 3 lately, 8 for 31. That is a lot of threes launched.

Saturday against Kent State will be a big one. A Kent win would put both teams at four losses in MAC play. An Ohio win give the Bobcats a 2 1/2 game lead.

Gabby Burris must have been thrilled to see EMU's starting lineup, which had no one over 5'10". That made her the tallest player on the floor, and she took advantage of her chance to post up shorter players under the basket to the tune of 19 points on 8-13 shooting.

But it's back to reality for Burris against Kent State, when she'll again be staring up at opposing posts. The Flashes start two 6'2" players in Nila Blackford and Lindsey Thall, and although Thall prefers to make a living by shooting deep threes, she can be effective in the paint. Ohio will again be forced to decide if they will sag on the bigs to control their production at the expense of leaving three-point shooters open.

Ohio will need more production from the bench than they got against EMU. Caitlyn Kroll, Edecia Beck, and Peyton Guice have had their moments this season, but none of them came against EMU. The trio combined for zero points in 35 minutes of play against the Eagles. Their lack of production meant that the starters had to rack up heavy minutes in a game that should have been a blowout. Those additional minutes could be felt later on in the season.

Good time for a bye week after Ohio survived Kent 63-57. In the first half, the Flashes were able to run their offense, shot 50%, and took a 37-31 lead into the break. But the Bobcats rediscovered their most potent offensive weapon in the second half - points off turnovers. Steals not only put points on the board, but disrupted Kent's offensive rhythm - they were just 9-31 in the half.

Hopefully the break will get Amani Burke back on track. After making her first shot of the game, she missed her last nine -- many of them bad misses on layup attempts. I don't think Ohio will get very far without her return to double digit scoring form.

Big bounceback game for the bench. Peyton Guice with 9 points, Caitlyn Kroll with 7, and Deesh Beck with 3 fouls in 5 minutes. OK, a bounceback for two out of three.

For long stretches of today's win at Miami, Ohio looked like what they could be - the best team in the MAC. Johnson controlled the game inside and outside from the point, Barker hit threes, and Burris was the toughest player on the floor. Best of all, Amani Burke looked again like an all-MAC player. Playing mostly without Cece Hooks (foul trouble) in the first half, the Bobcats were up by 19 at the half. When Hooks came back in for the third quarter, the lead ballooned to as much as 30 points.

Miami made a run in the fourth quarter to close to 12 on the strength of an 11-0 run, mostly against Ohio's bench, in just over a minute. The starters came back in, Johnson found Hooks with a couple of pretty assists, and the game was over. Final score 84-70.

This is the third straight game in which Hooks has picked up 2 quick fouls to start the game and has had to sit most of the first half. A lot of her fouls are on rebounds, when she tries to go through a player who already has the ball. Edecia Beck helped fill the gap left by Hooks' absence today, making an immediate impact with power rebounding and knocking in 6 points.
