One of my hobbies is Drum Corps.
Yesterday one of my friends told me I should check out OSU's marching band's show from last Sat. against Nebraska.
Its a salute to vieo games. It  was a bit "cheesy",but  still pretty good.

I guess their new band director is trying to loosen things up.

I couldn't get a link to work, but if you google "Ohio State Marching Band Video game" its all over the place.

It's good to have two of the best bands in the nation in the state of Ohio.  That show at the Nebraska game was epic.  Really showed off what they're good at.

Entertaining but appears to have been plagiarized...Should this really surprise anyone though?

Ohio State has a very good band.  Their major problem is that they've always been so boring.  Boring uniforms, boring shows, boring music, boring marching style, and on and on.  Plus, they're very tradition oriented which has caused them to do things which are bad, just because they're a tradition.  Take the Script Ohio for example.  The first time you see it, you say, "That's great!'  The second time, "That's Good."  But the third time, and the fourth, and the fifth.... you say, "I'm going to get a hot dog."  And then there's the God-awful Hang on Sloopy and that stupid dance they do to it, it makes you want to hurl.  It's too bad, because they play very well, their diagonals are really straight, and they work very hard.  Loosening up will help them tremendously.

They FINALLY get someone on staff with some creativity, even if it might've been copied.

The 110 is still the best around though!

I think both bands do an outstanding job of entertaining their constituencies.  110 plays to the student stands with music of their generation; O$U to the masses of old, young, rich, richer, tatoo parlors, and auto envelope distributors.

The Nebraska Show at halftime really let the student marchers shine vs halftime with the Flintstones when Ohio played at the Shoe last.

as good as their band is you'd think eventually they would figure out how to spell out the rest of their name.

I saw that Cal show on Youtube years ago...needless to say it's almost a carbon copy as far as music goes, and I preferred the Cal version

Saw the video and thought it was great, expecially coming from what is normally very stoic OSU halftime shows. Regardless of what show they are playing though, their musicality is always spectacular. Whether you care for their style or not, musically they can play, given credit where credit is due.

Back in the day, ABC would actually show at least a portion of the halftime show.  That was before someone decided it was better to give us the same old highlights from other games and the same old talking heads, spouting the same inane views about the top teams that are discussed ad nauseam through the week and especially on game day.  Maybe it's because highlights were scarce back then because not every game in the country was televised.  Anyway, I digress.  Back then, it became obvious that bands didn't deviate much from standard routines.  SEC bands always marched in concentric circles and did some kind of kaleidoscope pattern.  Others rarely marched and played at the same time.  They would march to a spot, then stand and play; march to the next spot, stand and play.  I still cringe thinking about the WMU band playing "Whistle While You Work" between formations in the late '70s.  That's what makes the 110, Grambling and a few others so entertaining.  They give you something different every time.

I couldn't agree more, Pataskala!  The TV networks need to go back to showing the bands at halftime instead of the incessant talking heads they have!!

I agree, I watched that OSU clip and thought it was fantastic.  Obviously they have a different style than the 110 (and let's be clear, the Marching 110 are still the best!) but the OSU band is great at what they do; that routine they did took umteen hours of practice I'm sure and it was really cool to watch.

Interesting little sidenote:  the Marching 110's style is filtering down to the high school level-I'm not sure if that's good or bad.  My daughter's in the high school band and they were one of the bands that performed in Hudson, OH over this past weekend at a marching band show.  Several of the marching bands tried to use the same dancing style the 110 performs.  While the high school kids did a great job and the kids did  their best at the dancing part, it just didn't come off as authentic or as well rehearsed  as the 110's; kids were dancing in no real unison and it just didn't come off as good as the 110's.  My point?  There's a lot more work and preparation that the 110 uses in doing their what appears to be an impromptu dance than people give them credit for, and if a band doesn't practice a dancing routine as much as the 110 does, it just doesn't come off as entertaining to the crowd.

I think much of that is due to the number of 110 alumni who are band directors at various Ohio high schools.

I think that used to be more true than it is now. I've seen bands in my area (TN) begin to "groove" a bit on the field, and the directors are not OU alums. It seems to be a general trend.

The best high school band I've watched is Washington Court House.  Easily.  My guess is that their director is an OU alum, because they do the same student oriented shows as we do, their band plays great, and even their announcer introduces them EXACTLY like ours introduces the 110 (which is kind of annoying, but hey whatever floats the boats in Fayette County)

When I was in high school (summer of 1998 to be exact) our HS marching band went to the OHIO dance style. Our director wasn't an alum, but he hired a half dozen 110 members to come in and install the system over a week or so. We were pretty good that year and the next, but then we got a new director. Even though he wanted to continue the system, he didn't really "get" it. I think had we hired 110 members to come in periodically (once every 2-3 years) and reinforce/reinstall the lessons it would have worked wonders.

Even the A&M band's YouTube success reflects well on the 110, according to The Dispatch

Do you think the marching band at Texas Christian calls itself "The Best Saved Band in the Land"?

Yes...their director, Matt Stanley, marched at Ohio in early 90's.  He's done real well with that band.  My sister's family goes to WCH and she remembers when they hired Matt about 15 years ago.  At the time, their band was very bad and it was very unpopular to be in their band.  Her in-laws scoffed at the idea of their kids being in the band.  She told her in-laws to expect great things.  Now, it seems to be pretty cool band to be in.

There have been some good high school bands that mimic the 110 since at least the '80s and have fed their students into the 110.  Graham High School, Dover High School and Conneaut High School come to mind. I'm sure the list is growing with the recent success on youtube and I imagine there are non-110 directors trying to incorporate the concept with mixed results.  Word is out with the youtube videos and football team success, as the 110 had nearly 300 tryout this year and had to make about 50 alternates/cuts.

It is fun to see some of the success of 110 alumni.  At least three that I marched with are now Division I marching band directors at Southern Illinois, Temple and Duke.  It was funny last year when the LFMAO dance went viral and some Temple fan posting on the MAC boards "I don't see what the big deal is, Temple's band has done dancing the last couple of years."   I'm then providing him a little background information on his band director and the 110.
