Homecoming charity event

College Book Store is donating 10% of our profits from Homecoming Weekend to Good Works -- the only organization providing relief to the homeless of Athens County. More info is available here.

Clarified that for you. Good Works serves the homeless in nine counties comprising SEO. It operates the only homeless shelter in those nine counties. And as the economy has worsened, the need for help has overwhelmed Good Works' ability to provide it. More than ever, help is needed. I worked for them for two years, something I'm still amazed I'm able to say. If anyone has any questions, I'd be more than happy to answer.

Also, I heard the non-traveling players slept in tents on College Green to raise awareness and funds for GW while the team was at either UMass or Marshall. A big thank you to those gentlemen.

That is a great story I am sorry to only be hearing now.

Thanks for expounding! I knew it to be beyond Athens County but didn't know the exact area and didn't want to over-state it.

Given the way mistakes have been covered (regardless of opinion on whether that covereage was warranted), horns need to be tooted.

Good Works has been around for many years - great project. I have spent $ at College Book Store on gear (for myself and son) every game this year when made the trip down from C Bus. Complained that I was spending too much $ on gear for him last week. I guess he gets another browse through the store this weekend now too - and a learning opportunity/explanation "why"!

While Southeastern Ohio is larger than nine counties, JSF's basic point is well taken. My wife has volunteered there every week for a number of years. Last week she actually doubled her normal volunteer time to help work on a special project. They are actually more than just a homeless shelter. For instance, they have a program where low-income folks can volunteer at the shelter in various capacities and earn "credits" for their time. Some of these volunteers have earned enough credits to purchase home appliances and even automobiles. It's an extremely good charity, and I would encourage those so inclined to put Good Works on their donor list for regular contributions.

They also have a B&B on their property. It seems to be a no-frills kinda place, but the price is right. Has anyone stayed there before and can provide a review?

I have to correct you on this point: Transformation Station volunteers do not volunteer at the Timothy House (unless there is a specific project to be done while the house is closed). In most cases, they are out on Neighbors Helping Neighbors sites or at the Good Works Luhrig Road Property. It is Good Works policy to respect the privacy of Timothy House residents as much as possible and part of that means not subjecting them to a lot of random people coming through their temporary home.

Your wife does a great job and her help is greatly appreciated, I know that.
