...to explain to me why the last few games we are typically playing opposing team's wide outs 7-10 yards off the line of scrimmage.  For the last three games, we have had only one of our cover guys playing at the line of scrimmage with the others from 5-10 yards off, sometimes farther, and the MAC teams are looking far more potent against us than PSU did week one.

I watched the Penn State game again last night, and more often than not we were jamming Penn State's receivers at the line of scrimmage.  The results that day were pretty darn good, more so than how we have fared on D the last few weeks.  Granted Penn State was new at implementing the BOB scheme, but that is supposedly Big Tweleven talent that our guys were able to keep in check most of the afternoon.

Not seconding guessing our defensive scheme, just don't understand what seems to be a huge shift in scheme from week one.  Thanks in advance for the insight.

And for the record, I hate tOSU, and Ricordati and Torgerson are DB's.

My guess is that because of all the injuries in the defensive backfield they have been playing more zone and less man for man, but that's just a guess based on what I've seen. They don't usually give you shots on TV that really help see exactly what coverage is doing, particularly on the small internet picture.

Matt Mcgloin of Penn State is a decent QB, but his receivers are not real deep threats so it was easier to jam their receivers at the line without being as worried about the deep ball.  I really don't recall them throwing many deep passes on us  as their longest pass completion was for about 20 yards. While I don't think we had any sacks against Penn State, we did a pretty good job of putting some pressure and forcing him out of the pocket.

I'd bet that the staff didn't think much of the accuracy of the talent throwing the passes.  Did the UMass QB have a career day against Ohio?  Look at how lousy his stats were this past Saturday--which is more in character.  Buffalo QB has been way off on his passing.  Akron much better than the two prior mentioned but perhaps still not viewed as one who can always put it on the money.

So why not back off a little and let the backs support better against the run?  I'd bet the zone also leads to more picks. With this weekend's opponent ZD, I'd expect more up on the receivers because of the talent tossing the brick and the lack of the run.  We will see.

When you bring up the corners you're relying on your safeties to help deep. Without Moore and Hughes, my guess is Burrow is worried about blown deep coverages and is playing a more bend-but-don't-break style than he was earlier in the year.
