In TMD's five thoughts, the big topic was about which team was the best in the MAC. Ohio is the only undefeated and has the win over Penn State. But NIU is blowing out everyone right now, Toledo just beat a very good Cincy team and Kent State is the underdog that can't be beat. The nice thing to me is that there is all but an official semifinal format this year with NIU playing Toledo and the Bobcats going to Kent State. Those winners should meet in Detroit to settle this.

I don't think BG and BS should be ignored in this conversation. They both are very good teams, too.

Kent State at BG Should be a great game. I'm hoping BG is pissed they lost to us the week before and knocks off Kent.

What is the first tiebreaker if, hypothetically, Keny loses to BG but beats us and we end up tied for the East?

Record against the West, I think.

I think the first tie-breaker should two teams have the same conference record is head-to-head, so under your scenario a 7-1 Kent (with the win over us) would leave us out in the cold if we're also 7-1 (with the aforementioned loss to Kent)

We would not win a three-way tie, based on that link. So we better just keep winning.

Just keep winning! As long as we're undefeated, we'll remain the best in the MAC. It only gets tougher from here, though. Expect battles from Miami, BG, Ball State and Kent.

Don't forget EMU, they are now on a one-game winning streak.  Even when they lose they score a ton of points.

I'm not sure you can say who's best right now.  They all have their strengths and weaknesses.  They've all looked really good and really bad this season, even in wins.  Toledo got the marquee win, but that was in front of a boisterous home crowd.  How does that compare with a road win before 90,000+ hostile fans on a very emotional day?  Or wins vs. two AQ schools?  Then there's NIU's loss to Iowa, a team CMU beat.  Kent lost badly at Kentucky and four of their wins are against a 1AA school and teams that are a combined 3-19.  And Ohio has had close wins vs. the bottom feeders of the MAC East, but has a defense that's riddled with injuries.  I guess the best MAC team is the one that wins in Detroit the week after Thanksgiving.

Think "what have you done for me lately?"

NIU- obliterating opponents we squeaked by.  Not the same team that lost to Iowa.

Toledo- Showing very well lately, even if it were at home.

Kent-  looked impressive lately, even if it is against lower tier opponents.  Beat BG 41-27.

To me, the best teams are NIU and Toledo.  If we met Kent Saturday, I think Kent would get it.  But since we play them later on this season, it's a toss up.

Strange.  Mainly because they haven't played  yet.  November 17th in BG.

If the conversation is "Who are the MAC's better teams" then I would agree with you.  Neither BG or BSU have any business being in "The Best" conversation.

As of today, I think it's something like...

#1 Toledo/ N. ILL(Hard to say which is better but they both look extremely tough)
#3 Ohio
#4 Kent St.(Although they are closer to Ohio than people think)

That's as of now and I think a lot of it has to do with our injuries on D. If we can get some key guys back and start playing like we did vs. Penn St, we will be fine.

1. Ohio- did NOT lose a game they should have won.
2. Toledo- DID lose a game they should have won.
2. NIU- DID lose a game they should have won.
2. KSU- DID lose a game they should have won.

The best teams find a way to win. period.

I have to agree with Chuck_IV.  I think the question is better asked, who's the MAC's best team RIGHT NOW?  RIGHT NOW Toledo and Northern Illinois are playing better football than Ohio is.  We will only know after the season's over, but who's peaking now or hitting their stride?  Did Ohio peak with the Penn State and New Mexico State wins?  The season's long-like Ohio's Sweet 16 basketball team-it's best to peak when it counts at the latter part of the year and not the beginning.

Given the injuries that's swept through Ohio team, Ohio may have unfortunately peaked the first two weeks of the year.  But thankfully the games are played on the field and not on messageboards, so hopefully I'm wrong.

Some of you are ridiculous. Good teams find a way to win. It almost seems as though you guys are afraid of saying that Ohio is the best team in the MAC in fear of a let down.

Sure, we haven't been playing our best football as of late but in my opinion, we have the best win of the season in the MAC so far (Penn State) and are the only undefeated team.

I believe our offense is just as good as NIU's or Toledo's. The Rockets have some problems on defense just like us as we saw against EMU. NIU has been playing very well blowing out MAC teams but they lost to Iowa. Granted Iowa is in the Big 10 but C'mon. Have you seen them play? That is a game that NIU had to win for me to put them ahead of Ohio.

Kent is playing great as well but when you get blown out by Kentucky, there is no way I'm going to rank them ahead of Ohio.

It comes down to, you play to win the game. Ohio is the only team in the MAC yet to lose a game, have the best win in the MAC and is in the top 25. For those reasons, Ohio is currently the best team in the MAC.

It might change during the course of the season and we might not finish as the best team in the MAC but for god sakes people, start appreciating your Bobcats and talking them up! We have never had this opportunity to be this proud of our team and be able to talk proudly about OU football and a lot of you seem very reluctant to do so!

The only way you can gave a true best team is to be far and away the best of the conference and win all your conference games.  Otherwise it is all up for arguement and thus no one answer is correct.

For instance looking at the past wouldn't you say that Ball State was the best team in the MAC even though Buffalo beat them in the MACC back in I think 2008?  They were the better team all year, but Buffalo happened to peak at the right time and beat them when it counted, thus Buffalo can say they were the best in the MAC and have the trophy to prove it.  And Just like last year for basketball Akron probably believes they were the best in the MAC, but we had more overall wins, we won the Tournament Championship and made it to the Sweet 16.  But if you only look at MAC regular season play then yes Akron was the best team in the MAC and we peaked at the right time to just barely beat them in the tournament.

If you asked me who the most clutch team in the conference is the only right answer is OHIO.  But for the question of best it is really tight between OHIO, Toledo, and NIU and the arguements are all valid.  Hopefully the next 5 games will play out such that OHIO proves they are the best team in the MAC.

I live in Cleveland, OH.  I'm used to 50 years of having a great season only to wind up heartbroken so of course I'm afraid to say Ohio is the best team, its in my DNA! (insert rim-shot here)

Seriously though, of course you're right.  And believe me, after suffering throught the dark years, i.e. the pre-Solich years, I appreciate all the good vibes the team's receiving now, every single accolade they're getting is well deserved and earned.  I don't think I can talk the Bobcats up any more than I have, everybody within earshot of where I live and work knows that Ohio's been in Sports Illustrated for two straight weeks, is ranked, etc.  And I'm pretty sure Chuck_IV and everyone else who's said NIU and Toledo are playing better right now have said the same thing about the Bobcats and are really proud of them.

But the season doesn't end at 7 games.  No one in the world outside of Ohio fans cares who's in the BCS Top 25 after week 7.  For me, the question really is who will be the hot team to finish the year.

I only have to go back to the prior basketball season as an example.  For the first part of the MAC season, Akron was the consensus top MAC b-ball team.  Were they the best team?  They'd tell you that.  I don't really care if they were or weren't, all I know is Ohio was the best team when it mattered.

So yes what Ohio has done so far is great, super, throw in any positive adjective you want and I'd agree.  And I'm enjoying it a lot (please believe me when I say that as I'm surrounded by a sea of scarlet and gray).  But, the only thing that matters in the end is where Ohio finishes.

Edit: dang, Sargentfan beat me with the basketball analogy-props to you Sargentfan!  :)

I'm fine if some blogger doesn't think we are the best team in the conference. Just win, baby. Plus, it makes good bulletin board material.

Ohio will have to win 6 more before they can claim to be the best in the MAC. At this point they can only claim to be the one with the eyepatch.

For the past two weeks I have read comments and articles about how OHIO is not one of the three best teams in the MAC and certainly does not deserve a top 25 ranking. I have now accepted the hate and have learned to welcome it. The people who hate on our close games do not watch us get up early in them( not counting the UMASS game) and allow our 2nd and 3rd string to coast to the win.

Some where Frank Solich is grinning and getting ready to blow the doors off Fiami. You have to believe from everything we have seen this year from the team and coaching staff that everything is under control and they are right where they want to be. Until I see our first team really be handled and pushed to the wire I will not worry. If a team thinks we are not the best in the MAC then beat us!!
