Rourke's 6 touchdowns lead Ohio past Miami, 45-28

Sophomore QB runs for 3, passes for 3, totals 348 yards

ATHENS – Nathan Rourke’s six total touchdowns were the most in the NCAA this year and led Ohio to a 45-28 victory against Miami in the Battle of the Bricks on Tuesday night at Peden Stadium.

Rourke threw for three touchdowns and ran for three more, giving him 29 total on the season, including 16 on the ground.

After Miami (3-6, 2-3 Mid-American Conference) tied the game at 28 with 3:15 left in the third quarter, Rourke’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Jarrid Marhefka put Ohio (7-2, 4-1 MAC) up for good. It was followed by a 1-yard Rourke touchdown run with 10:42 left, and Louis Zervos put the game out of reach with a 36-yard field goal with 6:48 left.

Rourke had a 3-yard touchdown run and a 40-yard touchdown pass to Brendan Cope to give the Bobcats an early 14-0 lead, but Miami answered back with Billy Bahl throwing a 14-yard touchdown pass to James Gardner and then Alonzo Smith scoring from 16 yards out to tie the game at 14 by the end of the first quarter.

Rourke ran for a 7-yard touchdown and then threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Papi White to give Ohio a 14-point advantage again, but Gardner caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Bahl with 17 seconds left in the first half and then tied it again on a 25-yard touchdown catch from Bahl.

Rourke finished the game 21-of-33 passing for 294 yards and ran 10 times for 54 yards. A.J. Ouellette had 20 carries for 80 yards, Cope caught five passes for 89 yards, and White had five receptions for 80 yards.

Bahl was 28-of-51 passing for 350 yards and three touchdown passes to Gardner, but Bahl was picked off twice. Gardner racked up 166 yards on 10 catches, while Smith carried 10 times for 81 yards. Sam Martin had five receptions for 81 yards.

Ohio plays its final home game at a time to be announced Wednesday against Toledo at Peden Stadium.
