The Few, The Proud, The Bobcats!

And for the record, I hate tOSU, and Ricordati and Torgerson are DB's.

Huge if/when HCOM can raise the $25 million matching funds for scholarships.

The universities providing the most in scholarship $ will win/survive long term. Just about every dime raised should be going towards scholarships (or endowing faculty lines), no?

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

I sometimes look at scholarships as a discount on an inflated price. Perhaps if expenses could be reduced, there wouldn't be such a great need for bigger scholarships. The ease of getting "financial aid" more than anything has driven up the cost of higher education more than any other single factor in the last 50 years.

In an educational organization, the largest expenditure is personnel cost. Cutting that spending would do what to the local budget and tax base? Fewer jobs by the largest employer would t be a good thing I wouldn’t think.

This is great pub for the university being in the dispatch. With HCOM though the classes will have no difficulty staying full since its medicine so while the scholarship pledge is nice it doesn't move the needle that much. There are only so many medical school out there.

If Ohio could land a big scholarship fund donation for its business college in my estimation that would do the most for competing against the top in-state schools. The rankings of many business programs are already there but its a cost competitive environment. Poets&Quants had the undergrad business school ranked #72 which is impressive when there are 8,200 accredited colleges in the country and basically all of them have a business college. Miami BTW was ranked #46 in the country for business by the publication. They have Ohio State at #80 but with an average entering GPA of 3.95 for its business college.

Unlike BL who wants a strategic athletic partnership with Miami I don't view athletics as a gateway to a more valuable degree/higher student demand. The athletic department under Schaus calculated the ESPN exposure to be worth from the marketing side of things equal to spending 20 million in marketing value. That is helped by making the MACC and making a bowl game. Better broadcast slots from winning and scheduling better. The ROI however doesn't compare to having a more competitive price tag for attracting students.

I actually agree with this, Alan. It's kind of a vicious cycle. However, as mentioned by the former Green Jinx, this is not really the case in terms of the medical school. There are many other factors that are driving up the cost of medical education, and reducing student debt can be very helpful in providing better and more efficient health care. For instance, the greater the percentage graduates who have less debt, the more medical school graduates who can afford to go into new paradigms such as direct care. This also then creates a certain level of competition with the more regulated and bureaucratic, government-orient health care that today has become the standard. The competition can lead to more efficiencies in the latter. In terms of this large donation from the Ohio Osteopathic Foundations, please note that the bulk of it is going to the "translational" (whatever that means) research to improve health care and health education.

Not really. I think most comments were in regard to higher ed in general not this specific situation. When we came to OU in 1979, you could fit OU's higher administration in a pew at the Presbyterian Church. Today you'd need to rent Joel Olsteen's church.

Facts. Want to cut the university finances in half? Go to the bureaucratic heads and assistant deans.....
