L.C. you must have missed that little number by UCF name today (#8). If the committee is willing to rate a G5 team that wasn't even a full 13-0 going into the bowls and from a conference having a mediocre year high enough to qualify for an 8 team playoff then an autobid for the G5 isn't needed.
They were #8 before the game, and with a win, might have moved up to the top 5. Having an undefeated team in the Top 5 that was excluded from the playoffs would seem unfair to a lot of people. With the loss, they will drop out of the Top 10, and have a defeat, so clearly they didn't belong in the playoffs, even a 6 or 8 team playoff.
Not sure how you can conclude that. UCF had it's star QB on the sidelines due to injury. I, for one, think that if he had played UCF would have won. Also, if we go to an eight-team playoff, there will probably be a seat for the highest ranked G5 teams, not necessarily because the "powers-that-be" want it that way, but because of various internal dynamics within the FBS football community, including legal issues. These are the same issues that have lead to the G5 conferences getting money from the current playoff system. The P5 conferences would have kept it all, if they could.
And UCF got beat by a team missing 8 defensive starters and ran out of DB’s, so you really want to play “if’s and but’s”

OCF, UCF couldn’t beat, and the game really was not that close the 4th place team in the SEC, and one that had 8 starters out on defense. They got shredded by a below average offense that struggled v their directional Lousinana schools.

What I'm saying is that, viewed in retrospect, there is no reason now to bother coming up with a bigger playoff system since choosing 4 teams worked fine this year. Had UCF won, people might feel that 4 teams this year wasn't enough, and be more motivated to choose something different in the future.
Bingo! UCF has 25 win streak but it's best to play two top P5 teams and beat them in the same season. Then those two same teams need to be Top 15. So G5s will need to not have a light schedule.

Burrow is sometimes maddening to watch, but I'm not sure I've seen a tougher quarterback in years. Also, he has a knack for missing on four straight throws but when it's third down putting it on the money.
But really I just watch LSU games to listen to Ed Orgeron's interviews with sideline reporters, where it looks and sounds like a grizzly bear was given a purple polo shirt and a pair of khakis and allowed to coach a team of human beings.

Oh, I grade on a curve when it comes to LSU quarterbacks, given how that program has chewed them up and spit them out.
More maddening to me is watching him slam headfirst into 300-pound linemen without sliding.

The push for an expanded playoff will be coming from the B1G and PAC12 that weren't represented. I suspect it'll come hot and heavy. You and I may think it worked out fine this year, but those conferences and many of their fans don't. Heck, I even know some deluded O$U fans who still think their team should have made it, and would have put up a better show than dyslexic OU did against 'Bama.

I don't doubt that they will want to see an expansion, and the Big 12 probably does, too. Six teams will be plenty to satisfy them, allowing one from each of the P5 conferences, and then one additional team, usually an SEC team. Had UCF won, and especially, had they won convincingly, you'd see a push for 8 teams.

Bingo - shame for UCF (and other G5 programs per L.C.) the best, and most critical player on the team was out - e.g., imagine Ohio without O'Rourke in a game against a high-end opponent. Loss of Milton gutted the team.

I don't believe that that's the dynamic in play. We'll just have to wait and see what develops. Last year, if you remember, UCF beat Auburn, another vaunted SEC team with one of those huge OL's, and that Auburn team beat Alabama, the eventual national champion. You can't just take one game -- where neither team had its best players on the field -- and draw the kind of conclusions you are drawing with any kind of certainty.

All I said was that if UCF would have won, the case for including a G5 team would have been stronger. I certainly didn't say that it was a sure thing. If fact, I said the opposite, that it probably still wouldn't have happened. I do believe that with the B1G outside looking in, there is an extremely good chance that this will be the year when the playoff is expanded. Having a strong case for G5 inclusion this year would have been useful.
As for UCF's win last year, memories are short. Had they been able to repeat, the case for including a G5 team would have been stronger, and also fresh in their minds.

I think there are those that won't let them forget. What the announcers said yesterday will have no bearing on how the playoffs are restructured. They did their best to disparage UCF, but in the end it won't matter a whit.

And here I was thinking G5 teams aren't eligible for the national championship.
It turns out, if you just go 26-0 over a two year period, that third year the committee will, you know, think about it.

It’s called character and leadership. His guys know he is one of them, he’s not going to back down. When he got laid out and taunted on that pick 6, I could see in his eyes that UCF just screwed the pooch. And he goes out and has his best college game ever after that. Until LSU when clock management in the 4th, he was on track for a 500yd game.

The PAC12 has no dog in this fight until they actually field a team. OSU has no beef until they quit getting waxed by .500 teams in league play.

Actually they were missing 5 starters and 3 reserves that stepped into those spots (which is still devastating) - just don't want folks to think they trotted 11 guys out there and 8 looked around and said "Oh Sh,,,) - but yes, they were cobbled together). Of course that takes away nothing from the great game young Mr. Burrow played as he was facing a full UCF squad. Curious though as to why the dismissal of UCF - "They are what they are" - as an Ohio fan (I assume) first and foremost , you should be thrilled and excited by the penetration UCF has made as a G5 (albeit, their situation is quite different than OUrs), and disappointed they did not have their star QB this year when taking on the SEC foe (took out Auburn last year). Instead you want to "knock off the love affair" - sounds more like the dismissiveness of a Big11 backer than an Ohio G5er.

I wish these guys thought about being 50 years old and not being able to remember their children's names a little bit more.

Tom Brady: No character and not a leader?
Not sure where you bring Tom Brady into this. But as for character, has he not been suspended for cheating? Hmmm
He slides.
I wish these guys thought about being 50 years old and not being able to remember their children's names a little bit more.
It's why I actually secretly admired Tettleton's final season here. He didn't do stupid things like run into 300-pound men headfirst.
Nope, he just did things like spike footballs on 4th down.
Maybe that's because he didn't slide earlier in his career :)
