Mid70's Cat, last night I sent an e-mail to Coach Fox's Administrative Assistant, the one who prepares all the mailers, and information, the same one who would send any LOI's to recruits. Below is the e-mail and Ms. Dena Smiley's response:

Hope this helps.

Amazing how disappointing this blog has gotten. Used to be we talked at least a little about Xs and Os. Now it’s more about attacking people you don’t agree with or apparently don’t like personally or who aren’t 100% correct. I guess that’s why I don’t visit here as often as I used to.
LOL, go back to any year and find a thread where people advocate for a kid with zero offers from FBS schools and tell me how that worked out. I’ve advocated for many SE Ohio kids, bu5 my record v the output speaks for itself. In 20 years on this board I challenge you to find a SE Ohio kid who could play that I’ve disparaged.

LC, you and I have had many private conversations here, when have I totally missed any boat on this topic?

None. You have been mostly accurate about which SE Ohio athletes could play, and which ones couldn't. In particular I recall you pointing out that Johnson was the one to offer Austin Pleasants, and that it was a good decision, while the prior OL coach wasn't interested. As I recall, you also had mixed feelings about the LB from Nelsonville, Edwards, I think, who ended up playing some, but wasn't a star. You were also correct that Roback was an athlete but would never be a QB for Ohio (he ended up at TE, and had one good year, including an important catch in the Spud Bowl, before a back injury ended his career.) You also specifically told me that the Luehrman twins were players (even though they had no other offers), and that, while it would take them extra time to learn to play with their hand on the ground, they would be excellent Tight Ends in a couple years.

FYI, LC: That LB from Nelsonville, a math major, is now Rep. Jay Edwards (R-Nelsonville) in the Ohio House of Representatives, and is slowly climbing up the leadership ladder in the party. He has been very active in sponsoring legislation to fight the opioid drug crisis among other things.

Good to hear. Football is not an end in itself; it's part of a preparation for life after sports. There is no greater credit to a program than to have it's players succeed after sports.

That site is just wrong. Sorry. Lots of other sites out there have the information correct if you look. Billy got it straight from the horse's mouth. If for some reason you don't trust him then why don't you email Valpo yourself? I have a friend with a son who plays there. They are non-scholarship. I think that the Pioneer league being non-scholarship is common knowledge among most college football fans. It isn't exactly hidden information.

Or Valpo's website:

Award amounts vary by sport.

Scholarship renewal abides by NCAA rules. Scholarships are awarded at each coach’s discretion. Notified by Athletic Department.

No, that site isn't wrong. It's just worded in a funny way. It says that they do offer scholarships to football players, and then it clarifies what types of scholarships they do offer. "Need-based and academic scholarships are available for student-athletes."

So, that's it. Yes, football players can earn scholarship, but the scholarships are based on need, or on academic ability, and are not based on football ability.

Let's get to the point. Were you ever offered a D1 scholarship for athletics? Simple question, okay.

I was offered from multiple schools. And there are MANY creative ways a D1 school can recruit and offer a kid to play basketball, football, baseball, etc.

PS You can email Valpo and tell them their website is incorrect.

LC .. you seem to 'get it' Only point I'll disagree a bit on is that they often are offering the scholarship to the kid based on his athletic ability and he happens to also be a decent student. It's in some ways a way to deal with a more complex issue when a school wants to be competitive in a particular sport.

They are not Athletic Scholarships! That was the point of discussion. That website again if you look at it is a scam type site. Bottom line VALPO does NoT give Football Scholarships. And what’s funny, if you look, above I knew exactly where Mid 70’s got his information.

To answer your question, by my junior year I got through school on a football scholarship, I can document that, so yes, I was on a football scholarship. My first 2 years I paid my own way, my last two years I received a tuition waiver and room and board check that came from Mac and Coach Lichtenberg. So, there you go! I also have 4 Varsity letters from OHiO, and am a member of the Varsity O Club.

I found the information on how they don't give out football scholarships on Valpo's site. Unless I am missing something, you provided no information directly from Valpo. Sportsrecruits.com wrote a site on their own about Valpo's football program. It isn't affiliated with Valpo anymore than BobcatAttack is affiliated with Ohio. For instance, here is the webpage on the same site about OUr football program.

https://sportsrecruits.com/athletic-scholarships/mens-foo...

Now, if Valpo is looking at a football player and saying he is very close to meeting the need scholarship and Valpo cheats and breaks its own conference rules and gives some form of aid that they normally wouldn't to that I cannot speak. But it is not a football scholarship. That would be a straight-out clear cheating.

LOL, a kid with a 3.2 who gets a Presidential scholarship is NOT on an athletice scholarship. I answered your question, I have my varsity letters, I also have documentation to my scholarship status. You have a website that does NOT associate itself with VALPO other than a logo, the address is NO VALPO, it is also linked to over 300 other schools. There is a poster, who I don’t even know who’s smart enough to realize this who has a kid who plays, yet your anger has you in denial, reaching for straws and now you are trying to make it about if I was ever on a football scholarship. Well yes, I was, now what are you going to try to change the narrative too? By NCAA rules, VALPO is non-football scholarship, as is every member of their league. Next!

This is the website that Mid70’s claims to be Valpo’s, feel free to check it out, it’s a spam site trying to sell a service. You will find every school on this site. Check it out! And keep in mind Mid70’s also claims it’s Valpo’s site

https://sportsrecruits.com /

And he says I don’t know what it’s about.

It seems you are misunderstanding what I said, so I will clarify it. Even according to the site you linked, Valpo does not offer Football scholarships. It is possible for football players to earn scholarships, but not football scholarships. They can earn need based scholarships, and they can earn academic scholarships. The Ivy league is the same way: there are no football scholarships, only scholarships based on need and based on merit.

Here is the important difference: The awarding of scholarships based on academic merit and need are decisions made in the financial aid office, and the coaches have no input. If the football coaches had input, it would be a clear violation of conference rules. All the link that you cited tells us is that football players are not precluded from earning scholarships - they have the same opportunities as all other students.

Mid 70’s, so far it’s 3 posters to you, all looking at your website that you claim is Valpo’s, it’s NOT! You then call me names, then you try and say since you “don’t think” I had a scholarship that I can’t know anything. Yet, you ignore others who also say you are wrong. Don’t make this personal. I’m ignoring your insults to my intellect or experience, just admit you are wrong here.

Mid70s, 99 percent of the time I agree with your posts. I consider you one of the most sane posters on this website. I guess that might be damning by faint praise! ;-) Seriously, I do think you are one of the most responsible posters on BA. But, this time you are dead wrong. BTC is correct. The link you provided is to a spam site trying to lure in prospective recruits to sign up for their "services" to get a scholarship. It's a very shady operation. I checked thoroughly and BTC is also correct that Valpo only offers academic scholarships for football. Now, it is correct, I'm quite certain, that it is sometimes easier for a promising RB, OL, MLB, etc. to get an academic scholarship than for an equally academically qualified non-athlete. The first college I went to for the first semester of my freshman year was Wittenberg, a Div III school. They had a similar kind of approach. One of my four roommates was a football player, who had an academic scholarship. I had no scholarship, even though I was academically at least on his level if not a little better in terms of my high school grades and SAT scores.
