I guess it's OK to beat the **** out her then. Sheesh.

Hard to imagine OSU fans blaming the victim.
That's a really ignorant comment.
How is that comment ignorant? Ohio State fans are talking about rumors meant to discredit Mrs. Smith. And so are fans on this site. That would make your comment ignorant, not SBH’s.
1. What fans on this site are discrediting the accuser?

2. The statement was that there are more potential facts coming out about this on both sides and SBH's interpretation of that is it means abuse is OK?

I don't believe that is that is what the original post meant and it was an ignorant comment to jump to that conclusion.

Where did I say there were fans on this site discrediting the accuser? I said there were fans discussing rumors meant to discredit her. So his comment wasn’t ignorant. You may not want to see it from his perspective. But that doesn’t make him or his statement ignorant.

Rumors swirling amongst the Columbus faithful that she is no saint either. Sounds like a dysfunctional relationship on both sides. Will be interesting to see what happens in the next few weeks and who else steps forward.

This is your statement of “potential facts”? Lol
But you aren’t an Ohio State or Urban Meyer fan huh? Riiight.

Trust me. I'm no OSU or Urban fan. I'm trying to look at things very objectively here because I think this could have implications not just for sports, but also the way employer/employee relationships outside of sports are managed.

Yes objectivity is the main issue here, whether one likes/dislikes Urban Meyer etc. This issue could set the stage for years to come on what happens in these situations. Whereas I thought Coach Urban Meyer was gone at the end of last week, with the naming of this Special Panel, along with Urban Meyer's own statement, I am now beginning to think he might keep his job after all.

While we are at it, one more thing that bothers me. Living in Columbus I come across people all the time who are Uber Buckeye fans, have specialized license plates in every manner of form that say Buckeyes or Ohio State. Half the time these people are MAC grads and even Bobcat alums. They haven't been to a Bobcat game since they were students and if their life depended upon it couldn't name a single Bobcat head of any sport since they left campus.

On the other hand, we have individuals who occasionally make their presence known here by attacking people accusing them of being a secret Buckeye fan (as if they were secretly sending stolen data to Havana or Pyongyang,) just because they mention the school up north or reference a breaking news story. Why anyone would let Ohio State fans occupy that much space in their brains is beyond me. We had alumni dead and buried before they dug the foundation for the first campus building in Columbus. They will always get more media attention, ESPN coverage, high quality of recruits etc. We have made tremendous strides since I was in Athens in the 1980s and 1990s. We have discussed ad nauseam what it was like then to get on TV, or get Bobcat apparel once you left Athens. Let's focus on the positive and leave it at that. I will know get off my soap box!

If Meyer gets fired it will because he violated OSU policy (per earlier post) or a clause in his contract (or both). Both violations (of company policy or a contract clause) are, and always have been grounds for termination. I don't see this as setting a new standard or having an impact on the grater business world unless a company adopts a similar policy or adds such clauses to an executive's contract.

If Urban Meyer doesn't get fired, it will be because of the "Working Group" (with former federal judicial officials on it) convened by Ohio State giving him and the university an out which will be a method that will be used by powerful employers from here on out to cover their bases.

It's ESPN's fault . . . you don't believe it? Well just look here:

https://tinyurl.com/yd8ocrmy

Meyer is totally innocent of any wrongdoing. ESPN, the messenger, should be killed. This is despite the fact that the reporter was not working for ESPN; he had been fired. But, facts don't make much difference for some Bucknut fans.

I thought it wouldn't take too long for someone to say something like that and turn the thread into a national political one.  In my mind had several most likely suspects to do that.  You were in my top five! wink

The article you linked to included reference to a sign that said ESPN = Fake News. Is there a way to discuss why that's happening that's apolotitical? It is literally the President's catch phrase these days.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm all for pointing out when Ohio State fans look stupid. So don't let me stop you.

With osu saying that the investigation will be completed within 2 weeks, we can put this thread to bed. It seems pretty clear that they already know the answer they are going to give. They're just trying to come up with the best way to spin it.

Meyer will be on the sidelines for the TCU game....they've got a national championship to win!

C Money if Urban Meyer is back on the sidelines as you and I now feel will take place, the Ohio State "Working Group" I commented on a few posts above your post, will be the future model for all coaches, business leaders etc engulfed in a similar scandal. Bring in retired federal judicial officials to give your coach or business leader some cover and your university or business can wash their hands of it.

That being said, am I the only one shaking my head at ACC, SEC and Big 12 pundits and sportswriters lecturing Urban Meyer and preaching the Gospel of Accountability when many of the programs they cover have hardly been Apostles of Virtue! There are not only books you could write about some of these programs, but extended volumes. Miami and Oklahoma could be a Ken Burns PBS mini-series in and of itself!

For those who lust after the big time football be careful of what you wish for because it comes with a big load of imbeciles like these. Not a good look for OSU. I think if you really dig down into it, it's probably not that embarrassing. Less than 200 people out of a football obsessed metro area of almost 2 million. No students, and if you could check, I'd bet few if any alumni. Still, that's not what will get mentioned nationally. Just that there was a rally to support the football coach in front of the stadium.

As for Meyer's fate. I have no idea really. Don't care enough to dig too deep into it. It doesn't seem to be a title ix issue, but he possibly violated his employment contract. If he did let the AD know then who made the final decision? It's not a ped state situation where the highest powers in the university made a conscious decision not to notify authorities. The local police apparently did investigate the issue and didn't press charges. If Meyer gets off, I think that latter point will be the foundation for OSU's reasoning.

Very good crisis management on the part of the OSU admin though. Going dark, suspending Meyer and forming the committee is all some next level shit that other universities will be studying. Big contrast from Gordon Gee running his mouth for the cameras the last time they went through this.

Agreed. I think this is one of the bigger issues that triggered my response to this situation. There seems to be a feeling that the the Urban situation is being rolled into other athletic scandal situations and people have taken on a "mob mentality" to target OSU/Meyer without really stopping to think about this.

On a side note, OSU is really in a no-win position here -- fire Urban and you're likely in a high-profile lawsuit and/or big payout. Keep Urban and the national narrative is that OSU turns it head the other way on issues. Hey, if OU becomes the best college football team in Ohio, I'm all for that.

Plus this is added fodder on the recruiting trail. I'm sure Saban, Harbaugh, Brian Kelly, et al., are eager to look a recruit's Mom in the eye and pontificate how such things don't happen at their institutions.

At Kelly's they're just victims of negligent manslaughter or get pressured into suicide by team members.

I don't understand why rich and powerful people don't use their lawyers. That's why they are there. The second you learn this info, call your lawyer. Ask them what to do next.

Don't go to a life coach. Don't go to a mentor. Don't go to a colleague. You can talk to them later. Go to the person who can tell you what your responsibilities are in that situation.
It's sad that we're at a point in society where calling a lawyer to protect yourself takes precedence over doing the right thing.
It's sad you keep responding to me when I've made it clear I find you reprehensible and don't wish to talk to you.

It seems I've struck a nerve. My intent was to explore a bad take in greater detail, not "talk to you."

Quote:expand_more
Calling his lawyer would've meant Smith was fired within the hour, this woman would've been heard and Meyer would be preparing for his first game of the season rather than on the cusp of being fired.

I disagree entirely. If a lawyer is "following procedure" they have a legal obligation to protect their client. Any process that relies on a lawyer to protect the physical well-being of the victim (or allow her to "be heard") is fundamentally flawed.

I'm not convinced Urban calling his lawyer would've changed a thing.

Quote:expand_more
Doing the right thing is a process. It is not relying on your feelings or gut. There are procedures to follow so that this situation was handled properly.
"Following procedure" for the sake of "following procedure" isn't good enough.

Not all procedures are inherently good. I

I use my brain, not my gut, to evaluate if a procedure goes far enough in "doing the right thing."
I've seen crazier things happen.

Sam Bobcat, how old are you, still a student? Have you read my posts on here? I forget more Bobcat History than you will ever know, been to more games home and away than you can imagine. How many MAC stadiums have you been to, do you know all the teams? Do yourself a favor, when the school year starts go to one of the freshman dorms and try your schtick out on one of them, maybe some geeky freshman who wouldn't know Bill Hess from Bill Belichick or Jim Grobe from Jim Brown might fall for it.

Sam Bobcat's post reminds me of a segment I saw a few years ago on 60 Minutes or one of those news program shows. The segment featured sports shock jocks who got on the air and the minute someone didn't like their views that someone was really a secret fan of the other team or rival. The segment was devastating in that when pressed these shock jocks knew nothing of the history of the various teams they liked and couldn't care less to delve into the nuances of the major stories of the day. My guess is that when I mentioned the legendary Bobcat Coach Bill Hess, Sam had to go to Wikipedia to find out who he was.

Jim Rome was like those shock jocks in his early days, making fun of sports fans who called in giving analogies about something that was five years or more back in time. This sort of behavior was parodied in the TV show Frasier, where the fictional sports anchor at the radio station where Frasier worked, Bulldog Briscoe was always getting himself into some sort of trouble. He always tried to get out of a situation he didn't understand by name calling because he certainly couldn't think or physically fight his way out of any problem.

The thing I have always liked about this message board is the interesting analysis, debate, historical references and give and take that has been the hallmark of this site. Some of the boards for the major conferences have degenerated into a bad Bulldog Briscoe segment which is why they have certain other message boards for serious fans who do what we do, at least most of the time.

SBH I think you're right, the show was firing on all cylinders when some of the side characters like Bulldog Briscoe, the sports show guy, and Gil Chesterton, the station's food critic, were given more time on the show.
