Let's be clear about Albin "leaving" Ohio. The situation concerning Albin was he did NOT want to leave Ohio. It was that Ohio did NOT want him back. And by saying "Ohio" didn't want him back, that's directed to the then-leadership of an athletic administrator who is now employed elsewhere. Albin had no intentions of leaving Ohio until it was made very clear to him that his future at Ohio was going to look very differently. Those who know, know. So let's not make Albin's departure out like he won the MACC and then immediately bolted Ohio in search of better things. He did exactly what any of us on here would have done being dealt the same hand. I feel bad for him because he was dealt a crappy hand here after accomplishing something that hadn't been done since 1968 (that not even Frank Solich could do). He was then dealt a not-so-great hand in the Charlotte situation - which he openly took - and sadly I feel his days could be numbered there too.
If only he didn't have a sick dog he could have ridden with the players after the big win. He CHOSE to leave, end of story. And any intelligent coach would have waited until AFTER the regular season ended to start negotiating a new contract.
I just went and re-read my texts from that bus ride. The kids doing karaoke. Oh my! Some day I'll have to show some of these.

I find it hard to believe this take is accurate if what has been said about him being offered more money by us after the MACC win than Charlotte is giving him is true. Even harder to believe knowing that Cromer was likely working on her exit already, why would she care that much.
I think he misplayed his hand. Cromer told him to wait until after the game because she could get him paid more if he won the title, he felt slighted by that and ran his mouth to friends that the university didn’t want him when in reality he should have had some belief in himself and that team. Based on his public speaking skills, I find it hard to believe he would have strong negotiating skills.
There is no world where he gets offered more money by Ohio than he is getting paid at Charlotte and we “didn’t want him here”.
He was offered comparable money the day before the MACC. If you want to blame somebody for delaying the raise, blame Lori Gonzalez. But if you blame her, then also acknowledge the anti-athletics atmosphere in Athens, where the faculty is up in arms over any investment in ICA.

I agree with two statements made or implied here:
1. Cromer didn't treat Albin well.
2. Albin didn't play his hand well.
Those two realities can exist in the same universe.
I don't have a boatload of inside information on what transpired, but I do have a few little tidbits here and there. It's just enough to make me want to know more. I do wish we had some real investigative journalists in this town who would try to turn over some more rocks. Then we might know the full story of what went down. At this juncture it's just real hard to say much more than #1 and #2 above are in all probabiity true.
He went from $700,000 to $400,000 raised to $500,000. He must've been treated pretty poorly to want to take that big of a pay cut moving to a bigger city with a higher cost of living.
I had seen the number $1.5 million floated around for some of Charlotte's candidates. Albin was better than a lot of those candidates so his agent must not be good.

People cheering the firing of the only coach to win a MACC in 50+ years is just sad.
his winning at Ohio does not require me, nor lead me, to accept failure at Charlotte. I wanted him to succeed at Charlotte as much as anyone - I'm probably the only one on this board that has a dog (no pun) in the fight. He has not done so.
It is clear that there are some that are resentful over the way he left and want him to fail. It is also clear that there are those that are thankful or even know him in real life and want him to succeed. I would put myself in the want him to succeed camp mostly because it would take a lot for me to want someone to fail. However, I barely feel emotionally invested in it at all. That doesn't mean that I am not more interested in what is happening than I would be with any other coach at a random FBS team. I think that there are a lot of posters here that are also not all that emotionally invested but still interested.

Certainly not enough to deal with that headache unless you felt the need to leave or felt completely unappreciated.

he received a 42% increase in compensation. he secured more money to compile a staff. He joined university with better NIL opportunities. for whatever reason he left Ohio - but let's stop trying to make it sound like he took a financial hit in doing so. not sure what headache you are referencing, but the current headache in Charlotte is his doing. he owns it.

Im leaning towards the scenario if anything happens to Coach he'll be back in Athens but not as a head coach but coordinator.
I wonder how the board would feel about that?
And yes his sick dog would be welcomed back as well.

I'm with you. Clearly the administration has some credibility issues with me. Albin won (30) games in 3 years and raked the Red Clowns over glass for a MACC Title. Something I did not think I would see while above ground. And then we have this little Brian Smith thing. I certainly wish he would have made the bus ride back with his boys. The fact we have faculty being against ICA (seemingly forever) has always been a joke to me.

I'm with you on this, and would support such a move if his tenure at UNCC plays out the way it appears that it is going to. He's a good man, but made one rash move. I'd be less than honest if I didn't admit that I've made rash moves that I later regretted.

Congrats OCF on being made Chief of Paduke. Such a high honor where I'm from. Did not know you were a Murray State Racer. That's awesome. So you know how good the fishing is down in my area. And I agree with you, I made a rash decision to quit during practice because of Coach Knorr's action but was welcomed back by my teammates with open arms because they knew my frustration was not with the team, just the coach and his 3rd and 15 run up the middle plays. Regardless of what anyone says or thinks, he beat our rival in a MAC Title game. It gets no better than that and it was the first time an old East vs East team played in the championship. It's history and you can never take that away from him.

after a 4 hour weather delay charlotte got out played by App St. and a late pick 6 made the final score close. but effort should quiet the wolves a little. still needs to pick up some wins before the ECU game. October schedule is kind.

I watched the last half, after seeing Lane get his comeuppance. It looked to me like they had a pulse. Nice rally at the end that fell short. Some improvement from previous games this year and last that I saw.

Out of ICU but still in the hospital. two tough games coming up (louisiana and Memphis) before getting a few games in october against teams currently with losing records (though misleading since many of the opponent losses are against legit P4s). charlotte currently projected as double digit dogs in all games up to and including ECU. will see if they can grab a win or two. going into a home game against ECU winless would make the stands full of ECU fans who travel very very well.

Difficult day on the field and in the program's PR room. Got thumped by Louisiana. Didn't score an offensive TD. Has folks wondering why Albin - "thought he was an offensive guy".
Unfortunately it was a beautiful Carolina day. Stadium had a great crowd - but they were booing by the end. Also had over 70 recruits on campus. Not the best show for them. Next week is homecoming against Memphis (super tough homecoming opponent). Need a good showing for alums.
Natives feel paralyzed. Know 3rd coach in 5 years is not a good recipe, but see no hope with Albin. Program is just in a bad place. Don't completely blame Albin, but don't see him as the solution.

It is one of their tougher games this week. They have shown some minor improvement but still look pretty awful. This is a home game but it against one of their toughest opponents. I think they have maybe an 8% chance or so here. This, as I stated earlier in the thread is a theme. All four of their toughest conference games by preseason rank are at home and the weaker predicted opponents are on the road. This would be great if you were trying to win the conference but it is a disaster if you are just trying to win a game or two. The result of that is there is no game that you look and and think that they are a decent chance but none that look nearly impossible. Probably every game is literally between 6 or 7% and around 20%. North Texas had to replace their coach and their whole team and were picked 10th. They are probably looking better than that and @UNT is arguably the hardest looking game although there are several candidates. I think with what we see so far @UAB might be the easiest game. They arguably look like the 2nd worst team in the American.
I still think that they are a clear and obvious underdog in every game and going winless is very plausible. But the stat guy in me knows that if you have 8 games at that low but far from impossible chance, the odds of somehow, someway, pulling at least one out are still probably better than 50/50. He has a new AD probably working against him. But the fact that there are several years left on his contract and they just bought out a contract two years ago work for him. I know nothing about the environment there but I'd think that he probably has to win AT LEAST two games. If he doesn't, even though I am sure that the AD, President, and board of regents hate the idea of buying out another contract, I think they will find the money to do it from somewhere if they only win zero or one. I think that the odds of catching a team twice look a lot bleaker than getting one and if he has to win three I'd put that down around 5%. And if he gets to 0-9 or 0-10 my guess, although I don't know anything about Charlotte, just how these thing usually work, is that he'd be relieved before the season even ends.

They fired Will Healy in mid-season.
He was 10-14 in C-USA at the time.
He took them to a bowl in his first season
Healy would record the program's first win over a Power 5 opponent with a 31 to 28 win over Duke
To retain Albin after this season if it tanks would the the height of hypocrisy.
