Why is he getting screwed. He committed, Ohio paid for his summer school and apartment and he bailed. Why should there not be a penalty.

In many cases, I believe the athletes get hosed by many things the NCAA does but this is not one of them.

When Coach Groce or Jim Schaus or Rod McDavis or their counterparts across the country have to sit out a year before working at another NCAA institution, I'll agree with you.

He showed up.  He didn't like it.  He left before the school year started and enrolled elsewhere.  Let him play and get on with his life.

He did not get screwed. He held up a slot that somebody else wanted. He left us one guy short. he bailed on his teamates. I wish him well but the NCAA has this right.

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

There's only 2-3 sports where kids must sit out.

I have found no sound reasoning for such inequitable treatment.

As for him having bailed on his teamates.  Well, I sure was happy when Bubba Walther "bailed" on Akron.  Too much comings and goings for me to think of it that way anymore.

I'm now more interested in this "replacement" for him.   Why is this board so silent on this?  Surely someone knows who it is.  Maybe I need to start a topic for that....

I can't agree with Ohio69 on this point.  If the NCAA did not have these kind of rules, recruiting would be even more a cut throat game than it is now.  Schools would continually be raiding other schools.

He showed up, he had out of state tuition paid by the athletic department, he had housing and meals paid by the athletic department, he got a Pell check check for living expenses that comes out of Ohio coffers. He did not like it. What is the penalty and what is his fiduciary obligation?

If Groce or Shauz or any of those broke their contract, in most cases there is a clause in there that handles that situation and the monetary loss suffered by Ohio. WHether or not the next institution picks that up is moot as long as Ohio gets it's due.

No mystery . It is quid pro quo and Joe did not provide anything to the U in return for the monetary gain and credits, housing, food and spending money he received.

Jeff, would it be akin to conferences raiding other conferences for teams as now is going on? I cannot see the "logic" in making a kid sit out a year yet there is no repercussion for schools who bail on their conference partners with the blessings of their BD of Regents/Univ. Presidents, etc., all in the name of the almighty dollar. It's all about as "illogical" as the One and Done rule in Men'sBBall. Oh yea, it's all in the name of "protecting" the student athlete.

To me those are just the costs of doing business.  But, I'll admit most likely will not agree with that view.  (Although I may never forgive Jeff Mckinney for so publicly disagreeing.  Et Tu?....)

The absolute key point.  Schools could sit back and raid players after they had a good year - can you imagine the number of schools that would have come after Lattimore at S. Carolina after last year?  And who would get hurt the most?  mid majors and other non "high profile schools."

So 69, or anyone else who thinks players should not sit out when transferring - you would have no problem with name schools recruiting DJ away? kid emerges as a big time player and... "Hello DJ.  Bill Self here...."

No reprecussion?  It isn't like those schools are moving tomorrow... they're serving out the remainder of their contracts before moving, and paying exit fees.

The analogy is good, actually.  Even with everything going on in the conference shake-up, the schools are honoring their contracts and the stipulations in them for exiting.  Why should a student-athlete who is compensated be any different?

I'd be seriously bummed.  But, a swimmer could do it.  Why can't a basketball player?

Many or most non revenue sports are allowed to split schollys and give partials out. Basketball and football are not allowed to do this. They give one full scholly per player and have stipulations on how they do that that do not exist on the partials given by baseball, volley. swimming etc.

There is not much raiding going on in those other sports. We have had players offered through back channels following the NCAA run, to make the jump resulting in mid to  Major conference transfers. Fact. GOod point up there.

My understanding is that scholarships are just year by year.

Why should a kid have to sit out if the scholarship is not guaranteed over 4 years?

If a coach can pull a scholarship after the season, then doesn't that make every student athlete a free agent after each season?

Alright, now you're talking.  I think the transfer rule is important but I'd be much more interested in a plan that protects student athletes from being "massaged" out of a program just to make room for a better player.
