The whole discussion of cutting Boals pay is driven by pettiness. There isn't a movement afoot to reduce coaching pay either at mid majors with many paying more than ever. Saint Louis is the top mid major and they are paying their coach 2 million and probably spending at least 3 million on NIL.
Pettiness? What's petty about what I said, exactly? We have a limited budget. Some of it now goes to players. There's less money for coaching salaries than there was before. Seems logical, not petty.
We also basically have nothing in common with St. Louis. City school, no football, bigger conference, better tv deal.
On the other hand, we've got a lot in common with MAC schools. How does Boals' pay compare to MAC schools?
The MAC makes more on its TV deal than the A10 and the NCAA income is about the same at this point. Big East that is a different story they make 7.7 million a year. They apply that money toward their 8 million dollar rosters. Obviously they dwarf the MAC in a couple of ther areas like ticket sales and credit income from the NCAA tournament.

The top schools in the A10 are only doing 3 million in NIL + Revshare. Ohio could get their by third party deals, transfering basketball related revenue and/or outright institutional spending. Absolutely without a contribution the administration could spend 3 million on the players if it wanted to do but it doesn't.
The spending Ohio is doing on NIL/rev is what they deem adequate to compete in the MAC. In some cases they'll need to spend a little more or less depending upon position or individual. They need to keep up but I'm telling you it isn't really an arms race when the revenues aren't there at the A10, MVC etc. to put pressure on the player marketplace. Its leveled off quickly because there is hardly any money outside of the power conferences at least for basketball.
Going back to the idea of a gift, naming rights Ohio could turn around and use that money to push up the player budget to a degree relative to MAC peers if they believed an advantage could be obtained by it. 3 million spent on the roster could be something to aspire to.

What numbers are you seeing for the A10 tv deal? I see a $6m figure for 2022, and reports that the new deal increases the amount by 40%.
If those are right, that's a better deal than the MACs by a whole lot. What am I missing?

Impressive second half in front of a hostile crowd of 3 people at UMASS.
The season can’t end soon enough.

That A10 deal is 6 million for the entire conference. Divided by 14 that is 428k. The MAC's old TV deal paid 10 million signed back in 2014 and is looking to multiply that value with the new one in 2027. The A10 has no money and the Big East is really only able to do what its doing becaue of its TV deal.

He'll get two more years as the highest paid University employee to complete his demolition of Ohio basketball. Many in the outside community are sick of Boals and his and his players' antics, and many will think twice before renewing their tickets for next year. They just don't have any confidence in Boals, and Ohio basketball has ceased to be entertaining.

The MAC deal is football and basketball. The A10 is just basketball. A10 basketball programs are getting more of the $6m than MAC basketball teams are getting of the $10m. Even if the per school money were just divided equally between football and men's basketball, which it isn't, the take for basketball would still be lower then the A10 deal.
For reference, the 2023 men's basketball budget showed $38k in media rights revenue. We're way behind the A10.

Either way you slice it, he’s sub .500 this season. Last nights loss sucked the life out this team. We’re looking at 15-17 and 9-10 in MAC if you want to include the inevitable first round exit on Thursday.
We win last night, there’s at least momentum and optimism in that locker room.

To add to this, OUr guys played their a$$es off but I watched as Boals was shellshocked and froze at key moments. He whined and cried all night and didn't coach the guys up. He just isn't the guy, plain and simple. Outside of a MAC Title saving him I cannot see a world where he is a Bobcat next year. He even looks bored at times.

St. Bonnie is planning to pay its next coach less and allocate more towards NIL roster building. Time to follow suit.

There's just no chance we pay the buyout. Never happening.
I would not be so cocksure.
Yea, I mean, what’s really the point of a lame duck Boals year? Pavs and Hadaway are gone. No way Simmons stick around with an unproven roster of underclass talent.
The AD who hired him is gone and there’s just no way Boals does enough via portal and next season that will lead to an extension. He’s proven he just isn’t that good enough of a coach.
I’m not even sure Boals is that unaware to not see that writing on the wall. I wonder if a round 1 MAC exit and losing record has him consider stepping down rather than continue to bury the program into irrelevancy. Take a severance, remain involved, spin it around the new landscape of college sports.

St. Bonnie is planning to pay its next coach less and allocate more towards NIL roster building. Time to follow suit.

Interesting. It does go to show there is no money in the A10 if they need to cut coaching salaries to afford a high mid major roster. Eventually the MAC will be paying about same as the A10 with UMass raising the bar.

Jeff finishes the 2025-2026 regular season at 13-16.
We don’t count the two scrimmages against non-division-one schools.
If Miami gets to count 4 games against non D1 opponents on their way to 31-0, then we get 2.
Either way you slice it, he’s sub .500 this season. Last nights loss sucked the life out this team. We’re looking at 15-17 and 9-10 in MAC if you want to include the inevitable first round exit on Thursday.

If Boals salary is 25% of current basketball revenue and Boals buyout is even larger than his salary how does that work? It doesn't help the current AD has accomplished nothing so far aside from running off the football coach and eliminating the contribution carry over on tickets & parking.

He could learn from a guy like you on how not to fold under pressure. I’m sure your steady hand would have guided use team to a 15pt win.

I don't think he's saying he could do, just that he's observed other coaches in similar pressure situations rise better to the occasion. Growing up I observed Jim Snyder, who as a real cool cucumber in pressure situations. I admired immensely his ability to win close games. That doesn't mean that I could ever have coached a college team myself. If I now observe a coach with less ability, and I remark on that observation, that's not saying that I could step in and do the job.

How long have I been saying that Boals checked out a long time ago? I will go back to what I brought up last month. Boals needs to get with AD and take less of a buyout and walk now. Go become top assistant at a top 40 program. Being a head coach in this era of college hoops isn’t for him. Boals is not cut out for it and I truly believe he doesn’t want to do it anymore.
Zero fire.

With the obscure names being mentioned for the St. Bonaventure job, wouldn't Hurley be a lock for that one if he wants it? Boals is even a bigger name than some of what is being rumored out there for the Bonnies.
