We will be lucky, at best, to be 2-2 after the 1st 4 games. This game would be one of those 2 wins.

We'll be lucky to be 1-3. Heck Florida Atlantic had a real grown-up Spring game with uniforms and helmets.

After last season, it's hard to tell how much was Albin and how much was just a bad roster.

I would pin at least the Duquesne, Buffalo, Toledo and BG losses directly on Albin, or at least the coaching staff. We led Duquesne 13-0 in the first quarter and had to rally in the fourth quarter to even make it close. Had a 21-0 lead at Buffalo in the first quarter and got one FG after that (the safety was an unforced error by Buffalo). Those games were poorly coached because we didn't have a response to the other team's adjustments. We made progress vs EMU and MOFO, but regressed vs Toledo and BG. That's poor coaching.

Given last year I don't see an easy game on our schedule this season. Hell, we even trailed Akron in the third quarter last year before waking up and turning the game into a rout. But even Akron might be a better team this year. Unless we suddenly get some imagination in our offense it might another long season.

BGSU was lost due to a non-dressed player being selfish. The team and coaches deserved better that day.

Yep, stupidest move I ever seen an Ohio player make, and I've seen some stupid moves in my day.

Wasn't that the CMU game where we were about to get the ball back with about three minutes to go when someone on the sidelines who wasn't suited up mouthed off to the ref and got an unsportsmanlike penalty that gave CMU a first down? They then ran out the clock. As I recall, BG just flat-out shut us down most of the day, a lot like Syracuse did.

Edit: Actually, vs CMU we had a 4th & 2 coming up at our own 33 and probably would've gone for it when the unsportsmanlike pushed us back to our 17 and forced a punt.

That's the game I'm talking about. Forgot who it was against. As I recall it was a female ref he mouthed off to. Just insane.

Why does it matter that it was a female ref?

I was completely confused, given I was at the BG game like a crazy person and was racking my brain for any plainclothes player getting a penalty.

I noticed that. Thought that maybe they should have waited until after next season to give him a chance to redeem himself. Not sure exactly what message the award at this time sends to the rest of the team, but I can't imagine that it's a good one.

The individuals selected for the Medal of Excellence have distinguished themselves academically, athletically, and through demonstrated service and leadership

Ohio:
Julian Ross, Football, Masters in Sport Administration, 4.0 GPA

The incident on the field was not good, but I imagine we all do some stupid things in our lives. I did a few on Court Street back in the day. I blame mine on the CI.

The incident in question did not show sterling leadership, good role modeling, or good performance on the athletic filed (or in this case on the sidelines). I’m very impressed with his 4.0. And, I think he deserves recognition. I’m just questioning the timing. Obviously, the powers-that-be don’t agree with me, and maybe the majority on this board don’t either, but to me there’s a big disconnect in the timing.

Certainly possible, but impossible for the average fan to know. If that's the case they are probably betting that the average fan doesn't know he was the one who mouthed off at the ref and caused that crucial penalty. They are probably right as the average BAer is not the average fan!

Julian Ross does TONS of off the field work in the Community and Beyond with AIA Athletes In Action and he has his Master's Degree.
I see nothing wrong with honoring him with this award.

Thanks for that information. I did not know any of that. I suspect that most fans don’t know it either. I just hope he keeps his mouth in check going forward.

To clarity, I’m very impressed with the work you cite that he has done. It is very impressive. Nothing I said earlier was meant to say anything negative about his character, just that the memory is still fresh of this outrageous penalty. It’s one of the very few times in my fan life that I’ve seen a penalty called against a guy on the bench.
