Of course there won't be much of a university left.

I agree, O.U. doesn't make money on athletics.

But that doesn't mean they shouldn't put out the dumpster fire, that is the
current state of the football program.

I don't see it getting much, if any, better, even with the new DC's.

Does seem odd that, if they were so good, Miami let then get away.

If Albin's lack of success continues through next season, who knows how long
it will take for the program to return to even a semblance of respectability.

I still feel O.U. freeing itself from the albatross would be a good use of a miniscule portion of their budget surplus.

Athletics makes money in form of visitor revenue for the community which I think is part of the reason why Ohio football schedules to have 4 home weekend football games as opposed to the Kent St road warrior type scheduling.

If the OU Foundation is sitting on extra money I would put it toward that convention center hotel at the corner of Richland and the Ridges they've been talking about. Higher end hotel rooms for the region and a couple upscale restaurants. Redevelop the Ridges out buildings for shops as planned. That could in time attract higher end donors to fund that basketball practice facility.

Almost everything left on the 2016 master plan has to go through donors.

-Addition space for the business school (donor)
-New dorms (not needed at this point)
-Renovation of west green HCOM (university bond)
-Basketball Practice Facility (donor)
-Pool & Ice Rink at Ping (student fee)
-Conference center and shops (OU Foundation/Commercial Partnership)

Conference center & shops would pay the dividends.

He has one year under his belt. He will learn and adjust. It’s just not worth paying 500k to change coaches. Some have this idea that if we have a winning team, it somehow elevates the stature of the university. At any cost.

There was a lot of private money that went into the new OU-HCOM building, Heritage Hall. That name didn't come out of nowhere. Did you ever hear of the Ohio Osteopathic Heritage Foundations? Yes, it's plural.

That's not exactly true.

Albin has had 1 season as Head Coach.

But, how many years has he had as OC ?

Last season O.U. had the same staff that's been there for years.

These are players, at least on offense ,that he recruited.

Albin had to know Frank would be retiring soon.

As I've posted ,walking the sidelines Albin looked like a "deer in the head lights" all season.

I would agree that with the way Frank stepped down, there could have been
somewhat of a drop off in the in program.
But our football program fell off a cliff.

Albin seemed totally unprepared to be a Head Coach.

The fact that it doesn't seem any other program ever tried to snatch him away
is telling.

Yes, what it tells you is that he was an assistant coach at a bottom tier FBS school, and that there's not a huge market for assistants of bottom tier FBS schools.

We're not buying out Albin. Most people knew that was never a real possibility, and everybody else came around to the reality months ago. That you keep saying the same things over and over again doesn't make your point any more rational.

The AD negotiated a free out from Albin's contract after next year. That's when we'll move on.

So, Albin was "assistant coach at a bottom tier . . ".

Yet, O.U. was confident enough to make him Head Coach, with a four year contract.

Yes, there is an "out" after next season.

But no guarantee, even if next season is as bad or worse then the last one,
O.U., will exercise it.

You're entitled to your opinion on whether O.U. should have gotten rid of Albin after last season.

I'm entitled to mine.

I've posted why I believe he should have been bought out.

Your rationale seems to be O.U. shouldn't spend the $500 K to buy him out.
That's a legitimate position.

I think, since they have so much in surplus, it would have been money well spent.

It would show potential coaches and recruits that O.U. is serious about their football program.
I think O.U.'s actions demonstrate the opposite.

This has been covered ad nauseam. I understand how important your opinions are to you and how unwilling you are to change them, but there was no opportunity for a national search, as Solich retired shortly before the season. The AD had little choice, no negotiating leverage, and despite the fact that the number 4 appears in the contract, it's made irrelevant by the number 2.

You really should get this by now. It's been explained a dozen times. Nothing about that situation or contract suggests a high level of confidence from the AD.

rpbobcat wrote:

What's your point here? You're arguing that OU should pay for a buyout, but also saying you're unsure they'll exercise the free option next year? How are those two points not in direct conflict with one another?

Maybe a coach looking at an open head coaching job in the MAC will see an Athletic Director firing a coach 1 year into his contract after one losing season as a positive thing. But I have trouble seeing the case for that. I think what you view as indicating "seriousness about football" will read as irrational to the rest of the college football world. A 20 year coach resigns suddenly, the program hires his states successor, and takes a step back on the field. And the AD bails on said successor after 1 season, ignoring the contract and expectations set therein. Feels very irrational.

I think you just want a new coach and are ignoring what's rational and clear in aim of that objective. It's fine -- that's your opinion and you're entitled to it. But I don't think you've made a very compelling case at all that it makes sense or is even best for the program. And given that you're suggesting spending a lot of money to make this happen, the onus is on you to make that case very clearly. If the more expensive option is not very obviously the better choice, what sense does it make?

The schedule should be out any day now. AAC, CUSA and MWC have released theirs, although CUSA has included teams that don't plan to be in the conference come fall.

Love all of the buyout talk. I'm not happy where the football team is either. You are looking at a surplus but there have been talk that the surplus will be needed shortly for academic reasons. Plus as an employee here for over 31 years, the thought of not getting a raise again because some people are unhappy with the coach is not amusing. Donate if you want him gone.

There is no buyout needed. Albin will coach this season. If he shows improvement, he'll probably get 2 more years. If not, he's done and there's no buyout.

My opinion on O.U. keeping Albin being a mistake hasn't changed.

But, as the old saying goes, O.U. made their bed . . .

My question is, for the people who were opposed to a buyout, what would you consider enough of an improvement, after last year's 3-9 record, with a loss to an FCS team, for O.U. not to show him the door ?

Non-conference, I'd say we need to be at least 2-2. We're gonna get destroyed by Penn State regardless of who the coach is. Iowa State was quite good last year, and we're gonna lose there too. To show real progress, we need to beat FIU and losing to Fordham would be an embarrassment.

In the MAC, I think the expectation needs to be a winning record. We went 3-5 last year and we were bad, but there were easily two games that could have gone the other way. If we're 5-3 in conference and 7-5 overall with two losses against P5 teams it's hard for me to see how it makes sense to fire the coach. The two teams that went to the conference championship game last year were 6-2, and nobody in the league won more than 9 games.

I've never been opposed to a buyout but, like Ted, I think it's been pretty obvious that the second-year review in the contract pretty much showed that a buyout was not in the cards. I hope that "improvement" must be substantial and measurable. Going from 3-9 to 4-8 overall or from 3-5 to 4-4 in the MAC shouldn't cut it. The minimum should be a winning season overall and in the MAC. Another 0-4 start or even 1-3 with a loss to Fordham should be enough to can him.

Also need to show substantial improvement on both offense and defense. We were in the bottom third nationally in damn near every category. Even in just MAC games, on offense we were 9th in the MAC in scoring, 8th in total offense, and dead last in passing offense. On defense we were 8th in total defense and 11th in pass defense.

There are some intangibles like team discipline that cost us some games last year, but I don't know how you measure that. It goes beyond penalties to things like protecting leads.

Well, it has to be a factor in not attracting KSU like golfers to Athens with the several weeks of better weather in 45701.

All that "free" land on the Ridges so that cost is eliminated and then use the current university course land for something else.

Of course Saturday football attendance would drop because one might as well play 18 and still hear the 110 with the little blows on each down letting the listener know what's happening all the while playing on the most beautiful and beautifully maintained course within 50 miles.

A golf destination!

Funny you mention that. Back in the 80s and early 90s before I joined the Green and White Club, I'd often play 9 at OU listening to the game over the loud speakers. If we had a remote chance, I'd head over for the second half. It was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Precious few real opportunities for the MAC to make noise against "P" teams this season. The most likely are probably Vandy at NIU and Pitt at WMU, both on 9/17. Other interesting games should be MOFO at Kentucky, Buffalo at MD, and Kent at Wash on 9/3, and MOFO at NWern on 9/24. CMU opens at Okla St, which may be a revenge game for the Cowboys since they lost to CMU a few years ago in a game they still claim they won (https://www.espn.com/blog/big12/post/_/id/114685/central-... ).

Thursday, September 1
Central Michigan at Oklahoma State

Friday, September 2
Western Michigan at Michigan State

Saturday, September 3
Ball State at Tennessee
Bowling Green at UCLA
Buffalo at Maryland
Kent State at Washington
Miami at Kentucky

Saturday, September 10
Kent State at Oklahoma
Ohio at Penn State

Saturday, September 17
Akron at Tennessee
Eastern Michigan at Arizona State
Vanderbilt at Northern Illinois
Ohio at Iowa State
Toledo at Ohio State
Pittsburgh at Western Michigan

Saturday, September 24
Bowling Green at Mississippi State
Central Michigan at Penn State
Kent State at Georgia
Miami at Northwestern
Northern Illinois at Kentucky

We will get by.

We will survive.
