I heard that Carbone was responsible for the failed US Government response to hurricane Katrina.

Uh...what?  This is not my understanding at all.

I will add renovated campus to that list of Bobcat accomplishments in recent years. The new dorm plan is going to eliminate half of South Green and increasing the amount of suite-style housing to 35% from the 6% it stands at.  From the graduate program standpoint, the one that is most important in building a reputation among academia, the school has failed by cutting its MBA program to save a couple of bucks and was unable to get that PhD in Computer Science approved by the state. Its not like there is little interest in an MBA or PhD. C.S. programs in Athens. There are liberal arts PhD programs that were offered at Ohio in the 70's that are no longer available. The only options you have at OHIO in the liberal arts field is a PhD in History or English Lit. If the state really wanted to improve its economic circumstances it would increase the number of Phd's granted instead of beefing up the community college enrollments.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

A female friend of mine got assigned to the baseball team for athletic training stuff a few years back, and he generally felt the same way about having women in his dugout.

I REALLY have a bad feeling that the extra year will allow him to basically hand select his replacement. It's not like Athletics will stop him if he wants to do so.

Yeah, I really believe that reinstating an underperforming MBA and a bunch of worthless PhD programs will revitalize the state of Ohio's economy.

Oh, and by the way, Carbone was pushed.  Hard.

Here are some ideas for a successor:

Brian Brewer - Head coach at Marietta College. Great deal of success with trips to the D3 college world series.

Matt Englander - Head coach at Case Western. Took Case Western to the D3 tournament this year. Has built a decent program.

Josh Sorge - Former Bobcat. Success at the high school level. Success as an assistant at the college ranks. Well respected.

Brad Bohannon - Asst Coach at Kentucky. Long shot but great reputation. Would be a solid hire.

Assistant coach from a big 10 school? I dont think anyone from OSU would be a fit.

Steve Swisher is a former Major League All Star, an OU alum and lives 30 miles away in Parkersburg.  He used to coach minor league ball and now runs a successful baseball coaching clinic year round in town and has a pretty good success story (his son Nick) playing for the Yankees.  He has been away from OU baseball for too long because a falling out with Carbone.  He might at least be worth interviewing.

Swisher would be great. I would actually be surprised if any of the old timers came back to coach because of Carbones estranged relationship with just about everyone. They might come back if he has no affiliation with the program but my guess is he will still be around every once in a while, like Wren was.

One could only imagine how great Joe's retirement dinner could be. Think of all who should be in attendance:
past presidents, athletic directors, baseball teammates, players, other famous Ohio coaches and players etc etc. I'd like a ticket to this one, or at least the DVD.

Suprised to hear this comment from you. I think you would also be suprised to learn that graduates with the PhD in the liberal arts field earn approximately double working in industry after graduation over those with Bachelor's Degrees. Placement rate by graduation in either academia or industry is 73% (Higher rate than what it is for Engineering PhDs).

Any truth that Mike Schmidt has expressed interest in being involved in the selection process?

Like the retirement, hate the coming back for 2012, terrified at the hand pick replacement possibilities.

Hah...it will be a cold day in you-know-where before Schmidt has anything to do with Ohio Baseball. Sad, but true.

He was supposed to come to a game this year for the dedication of a scholarship in his name (paid for by someone else, though). Schmidt supposedly said he was "just too busy". There's now a scholarship in his name that he had absolutely nothing to do with.

Love or hate Carbone, at least he's loyal to the program. Despite his success, Schmidt has never given a dime to Ohio University and has distanced himself entirely from his alma mater.

Correction to the "lay person". Money has been given in Schmidts name, but not from his pocket. However there are plaques on the wall with him as the donor.

And FYI, my post you quoted was a young in cheek to feed the trolls.

I'm really hoping Schmidt will become more involved (or at least not so distant) with Carbone out of the picture.
