Not really sure if it is retiring or forced out (not trying to state rumors, just unsure on the specifics), but whatever. Gave a lot to the university I'll give him that. Great fundraiser. Everything else, no comment.

I plead that we hire outside the current staff. This will be a sought after job. Best field/weather in the MAC. Nice history. Great school. IPF on the way. Get a young gun to turn the ship around.

1. Congratulations to Coach Carbone on a solid career in the Green and White. The last few seasons have been tough, but I applaud his decision to let the University move in another decision. (If only a certain golf coach had the smarts to make a similar decision....). I wish Joe the best in his future endeavors.

2. If ever a team could rally around their outgoing leader, now would be the time.

3. This program needs to go a COMPLETELY different direction with the next hire. I trust Jim Schaus implicitly on this next move. He's been at Wichita State and knows the value of a strong baseball program. I think we'll be clapping his next move for years to come. I really believe that.

4. I guess I have to un-follow the fake Carbone on twitter, yes?

This sounds like the good ol' WWF with Vinnie Mac stipulations. How many times have we seen wrestlers "retire" only to keep coming back? I wonder how many one-year contracts will be paid out... if you smellllllllllllalalala, what I'm cooking....

I don't endorse the furry lifestyle, but when the Bobkitten is involved things can change mighty quickly...

Him and Schaus in a Loser-Leaves-Town match? Maybe they suspend his stirrups high above the ring for a good ol' fashioned slobberknocker ladder match with Schaus? Maybe a battle royale to see who succeeds him? A leather strap match? An anything goes match with Eastons, Metal Spikes, Pitching machines, and the like?

Why doesn't he just shut it down already?

I think it's interesting how the media reports Carbone as the winningest coach in Ohio history. Why? Because he won more games than any other coach? Well, he also lost more games than Bob Wren and Jerry France combined, so doesn't that make him--by far--the losingest coach in Ohio history? The answer is probably somewhere in the middle. I think Bobcat Love summed it up with his first post. He's a great Bobcat, but a change could bring the program out of middledom. Perhaps the retirement is a year later than originally speculated (or wished for), but I think the future of Ohio baseball is bright.

I agree with Love's points as well.  Had the fortune(some might say misfortune) of living in Wichita when they won the NCAA title and also in New Orleans when both Tulane and UNO were national powers.  Being from Ohio, I was surprised at how big/deep a following an elite college baseball program can develop and the general lift it can bring to an athletic department.

That's been bugging me like crazy the past few days.

So, you won more games than anyone else.  In a sport that plays more games than anyone else.  And you coached longer than nearly everybody else (not sure if he is our longest-tenured coach ever or not -- has to be close).  Sorry, I'm not impressed.

This legend stuff makes me laugh I'm sorry. Loyalty, longevity, OK. If a legend wins two conference titles and has close to a .500 record against D1 schools, then we have seriously lowered all expectations.

It sounds like the door for OHIO to move down to DII is finally open losing an iconic coach like Joe Carbone. Taking another look at Carbone's record most of his impressive seasons came early in his tenure. He effectively made himself Boeh proof by what he accomplished in his first dozen years then beyond that brought equity value as a long tenured MAC coach. It does look suspecious that he is retiring at 64 but he must have a very generous state pension. His retirement could be spurred by the universities early retirement intiative, figuring that he could have future issues accessing that pension as the state's pension fund is under political pressure for cuts.

Yea - lets bring in someone from outside Ohio. Please. I will be calling Schaus with my opinion. I want an Ohio alum coaching Ohio Baseball. Several good options.

I just want someone who can use all the positive qualities this program has. No one on the current staff is coming even remotely close. The right hire opens my donating pockets and I would assume many other frustrated players in the past. Whether that is someone who played at Ohio or didn't, I don't really care. A good coach could turn this team into a MAC and regional contender in 3 years easily. Then when that coach leaves for a southern job, we reload with another coach. There is no reason we can't be a top 5-top 10 team in the Midwest. Seriously. Look at how college baseball is laid out. Minnesota, Ohio State and Michigan are the only Big Ten schools worth anything. Then Notre Dame. Horizon is terrible. A-10 Midwest schools are terrible. Kent State and Miami should be our only real threat in the MAC.

My suggestion is to get an assistant from a top tier program.  Someone who has been around winning and an extremely successful coach.  Someone that is young, eager, motivated and ready to turn this program around.

I bet there are a lot of young asst. at big time programs that would jump at the chance to start their head coaching careers at a school like Ohio U.  MAC head coaches that were young and came in and won, went on to much bigger schools.  Look at the old Ball State Coach, Tracy Smith from Miami, anyone that ever coached at Kent State.

You take a look at OU's facilities compared to those other MAC Schools and the fact we are further south than many, the campus is beautiful, the academics are much better than most of the other MAC schools.  A young up and comer would be crazy to pass on an opportunity like OU.

So basically get someone who is young and around big time winning programs.

What about someone like this:

http://vucommodores.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/holliday...

This is the type of guy I would want to play for.

I'm talking about the highly regarded plan exposused by Prof. Steven Hays to save money by moving the athletic department down from Division I to Divsion II. My response is that it won't happen unless the current athletic leadership like Schaus, Solich, Groce, Carbone, Theis all move on and the athletic department collapses across the major sports. Basketball and Football are doing well right now. Vollyball is doing very well. Now is not the time to pull the plug on D1 athletics unless you believe Carbone's retirement will be the start of downsizing across the athletic department, if a lessor replacement is chosen.

The academics at the school are in decline. OHIO has tried for many years to compete with the top level universities by offering comprehensive graduate education but now is cutting the full time MBA program. Outside of landing major research contracts in medicine and engineering this school is sliding backwards.

A former WOUB reporter said Carbone told her women shouldn't be in sports. So, yeah, there's another reason to welcome this news.

I was on campus during those glory years in baseball. Carbone was one of many great players and a great coach in Wren. As a matter a fact the late 60's early 70's were Ohio best few years in athletic accomplishments.
I always remember Joe talking about how difficult it was to compete in the early part of the season because of the cold weather. Now with the new indoor facility on the horizon the new coach should have better results.
As far as an earlier post about whether he was forced out or not...Baseball is not a revenue or even a high profile sport on college campuses. I would tend to think he wasn't pushed cause why would they give him the opportunity to take the earlier retirement bonus, qualify for a better state pension, and then re-hire for 1 more season? At $75K per that's real cheap for a coach today in a D-1 program. I would be willing to bet that his replacement will be paid better.
Joe's a great guy and he will probably get hooked up with a professions team to scout college talent. He'll get paid decent, collect his state pension, plus maybe social security, and whatever else he saved on his own. Financially he will probably be in a better place.

I'm just playing devil's advocate here that the next coach for Ohio Baseball may be paid less than Carbone to save costs. The general trend under McDavis-Schaus is to go first rate on the next hire but it could conversely be an indication of a new trend downward in Ohio athletics hiring. The hire for a replacement baseball coach will be a true test.
