Bores definitely made the right decision leaving Ohio. No way he develops into the pitcher he is now with our coaching staff.

Defending champion South Carolina, which had its 22-game tournament winning streak ended by Arkansas, 2-1, last night, is Kent State's opponent tomorrow. The winner then has to beat the Razorbacks twice in a row to reach the championship series.

This was very exciting to hear --- even here in London, England.   I hope that the Flashes can come out of that losers bracket and do what Ohio couldn't do in 1970, namely win it all.  Ohio that year was the only team in the CWS to beat the eventual champion USC, by a 1-0 score.  Climbing out of the losers bracket to the win the championship is difficult but not impossible.  Go Flashes!

P.S. What makes this even more exciting is that the KSU coach was in my son's class at Athens High School.

Does anyone know the last time a MAC school beat the current #1 team in the country in baseball, basketball or football?

Yeah... he "left". Didn't have much of a choice.

I could be wrong. But I think the answer is never. I've looked and seen a #4 and #5 but never a #1.

EMU and WMU had some pretty good teams back in the day.

But if it is the first, MAC office should be all over that. Should.

I think it's a very interesting question. I checked a couple of media guides just out of curiosity. Ohio basketball's media guide lists games against ranked opponents (since 1960). During that time, Ohio is 0-6 against #1's (last one was against UC in 1999). Ohio football media guide does not list those games. However, the 2010 game notes included record vs. ranked opponents since 1990. During that time, Ohio hasn't played a #1.

I checked Miami's guide and they do note their wins vs. highest-ranked opponents. In football, they beat #8 LSU in 1986. And in hoops they've beaten the #6 team twice (Utah in 1999 and UNC in 1973).

Other than tweet volume, the MAC Media Relations guys are not that strong. Of course, maybe it's a double-edged sword. Maybe you don't want the world to know that none of your teams have beat a #1.

Well USC won five straight College World Series starting in that 1970 season. In the CWS opener Ohio beat USC 4-1. However, I'm not sure if USC was #1 at the time going into the tournament, but they finished the year obviously as #1 at the CWS and in the polls.

That's a good thought. I couldn't find a poll for that year except for the final one, but I did find that USC was 41-12 with an 11-3 record in the Pac-8. Texas was 36-6 and Florida State 45-7-1, so those sound like better resumes to have been ranked higher, but who knows for sure.

I'm curious about your sources . . . because my memory says the USC win was a 1-0 Ohio victory, not 4-1.  It is possible your sources are better than my memory, but I have a very distinct memory that it was 1-0, unless I'm confusing the USC game with another game at the CWS that year.

I believe the box score is framed and in the locker room as well.

Ohio's NCAA tournament wins were 6-4 against Minnesota, 7-0 against Southern Illinois and 8-5 against Southern Illinois. In the CWS, the Bobcats beat USC 4-1, lost to Texas 7-2, beat Iowa State 9-6 and lost to Florida State 2-0. That last one is the closest one to 1-0.

Note that this was also the year an undisclosed amount of teams closed up shop early due to the Kent State incident. Not to take anything away from Ohio's baseball team, because they were the premiere team in the region all season long, but some of their top competition just ended their season early as students were sent home. Vern Alden elected to let the team play on because he knew the team was pretty special.

OK, it's fairly obvious that my memory is wrong here, but I usually remember the correct scores of these landmark Bobcat wins.  I'm wondering if the game was 1-0 going into the ninth inning and that's what I'm remembering rather than the final score.  Can anyone find a box score of this game? I've tried and have not been successful in my google searches.  At this point, I'm kind of "bugged" by this because of my apparent "memory problem."  No, I won't use "senior moment" as an excuse!
