Yes, true Freshmen do make it to the 2-deep. Here are some that did since 2005 (note, many other played, but were listed at #3 on the depth chart.) It is interesting how many of these players changed position later in their careers, and how many other either left, or were injured.: 2005 - Tommy Stuck Center, became starter after Knabb was injured 2005 - Brandon Jones, backup QB (later was injured) 2005 - Jayson White, #2 FB 2005 - Mark Parson, Nickle Back/#2 CB 2005 - Michael Mitchell, #2 FS (later moved to SS) 2005 - Jamison Hartke, #2 DE 2005 - Josh Leuck, #2 DT (later moved to LT) 2006 - Steven Jackson, #2 FS 2006 - Ernie Hodge, Starting DE (later moved to DT) 2006 - Kris Luchsinger, #2 DE 2007 - Noah Keller, #2 MLB 2007 - Mark Donahue, #2 WR left 2008 - AJ Strum, #2 RG (later moved to LT) 2008 - Riley Dunlop, #2 WR 2008 - Brandon Weaver, #2 DE (later moved to LB) 2009 - James Davis, #2 LG left 2009 - Skyler Allen, #2 C 2009 - Tyler Tettleton, #2 QB 2009 - Gary Fortune, #2 WR left 2009 - Carl Jones, #2 DT 2010 - Mark Smith, #2 LG later was injured 2011 - Antwon Crutcher, #2 NG after injuries ahead of him 2012 - Daz Patterson, #2 RB 2012 - Blake Scipio, #2 Nickle later was injured 2013 - Durrell Wood, #1 RG after injury to Lucas 2013 - Troy Mangen, #2 TE after injuries ahead of him 2013 - Sebastian Smith, #2 WR 2013 - Dyquan Stewart, #2 Nickle left 2013 - Terrell Basham, #2 DE 2014 - Joe Lowery, #2 LT 2014 - Jerrid McCray, #2 RT 2014 - AJ Ouellette, #1 RB 2014 - Kylan Nelson, #2 CB (later became SS) 2015 - Langston Provitt, #2 CB left 2015 - Evan Croutch, #2 WLB 2015 - Jake Hale, #1 LS 2017 - Hagen Meservy, #1 RG after injuries to Wood and Grimes 2017 - Brett Kittrell, #2 C 2017 - Jamal Hudson, #2 CB 2017 - Marlin Brooks, #2 CB
By year, that is 7,3,2,5,1,1,2,5,4,3,0,4,0 Note that the high years are 2005, 2008, and 2013-14, not the best years. Not surprisingly, in years when there is a good team, it is harder for a true Freshman to crack the top 2.
On a position by position basis, the positions where, adjusted for the number of spots (i.e. 5 OL positions, 2 CB spots, etc), the most players are able to crack the top 2 are CB, RB, and DE. Positions that have been hardest for players to crack the top 2 are TE, Safety, and NG/DT, but no positions have been impossible.
Considering that I think next year will be a strong team, I don't expect a lot of Freshmen on the 2-deep. While Daxson and Foster are two of the highest rated incoming Freshmen in recent Ohio history, those two are also at positions where making the top 2 has been the most difficult. Thus, the True Freshman I think is most likely to be on the 2-Deep is Wilbon.
