Looks like UK is sending the "SEC Pitcher of the Year Sean Hjelle to the mound on Friday".

Thought it was interesting they failed to mention that these teams met in 2015 with Ohio coming out with a 10-7 win. Would think that would be useful information in a regional preview.

I just checked out Indiana's 2017 schedule. Talk about an UNimpressive schedule especially for a 2 seed.

30% of their schedule was against NCAA teams and they had a top 32 RPI. Maybe not the best #2 seed but not sure what you expect.

Rough start for Ohio. Got the first two out against UK and the Wildcats score two and leave the bases loaded.

Ohio trails 2-0 after one. Klein throws 31 pitches in the first.

2nd inning was dicey too but got a huge 3-2-3 double play to get out of it. I can't even imagine the stress of being thrown into facing a lineup like Kentucky, Klein is clearly scared to give them anything hittable. 50 pitches thru 2, hope we don't have to burn too much bullpen today! 2-0 UK after 2.

Nice defensive play by Kentucky keeps Ohio off the board. Ohio trails 3-0 middle of five.

Ogg comes in to pitch the 5th, gives up a run-scoring single with two outs. Bobcats trail 4-0 after five.

All of Kentucky's runs have come with two outs. Ohio's defense has been excellent today.

We're fortunate to only be down 4-0. 16 of 30 Kentucky batters have gotten either a hit or walk and many of the outs were loud outs as TT alluded to. But we've managed to avoid the big blow. We've got to at least make their ace work a bit so we can hopefully get 2-3 innings with him out of there.

Not over yet. Blessing bailed us out of the 6th and pitched a clean 7th. Hjelle is out of the game after the first 3 Bobcats in the 7th all scored with a Rudy Rott HR!

Lost 6-4, made it interesting in the 9th with Rott at the plate. I am impressed with how they battled. We can win the next 2.

Hard fought game, and proud of the Bobcats, but it's real hard to win a game when you walk nine batters, two with the bases loaded.

NC State tops Indiana 7-6 in 12 innings. Indiana led most of the way. Gave up tying run in 8th inning. Then NC State got 2 in the 12th. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 12th, Indiana got a walk and an RBI triple, but a strikeout stranded the tying run at 3rd. It can't hurt Ohio to play an opponent that had to go 12 innings, didn't get done until 11:40 and lost a heart-breaker.

Game tied at 2 in 4th.

Ohio got 2 in the first inning and probably could have been more. First 4 guys reached (a walk forced in the first run). A sac fly followed and then another walk to load the bases again with 1 out, but a double play ended the inning.

Indiana has followed with a pair of solo shots in the 2nd and 4th innings, and Ohio has only had a couple of base runners since the 1st inning.

Starting to get away from Ohio a little. Now 6-2 Indiana going to the bottom of the 6th. Colletti came in for Salisbury in the 4th.

Ohio lost 11-2. Once Indiana got going, Ohio couldn't stop them. Logan Sowers hit three home runs. And once pitcher Jonathan Stiever found his groove after a bad first inning that could have been worse, Ohio didn't manage much at the plate.

As I watched Ohio get outclassed at bat, in the field and on the mound, I found myself pondering this question: How did Bob Wren bring together such talents as Mike Schmidt, Jim French, Steve Swisher, Tom Murphy, Rich McKinney and his others who saw action in the majors? Who dominated the MAC?

Ohio has to schedule better non conference games. This is a talent team but they don't get challenged enough to learn how to fight through something like the NCAA tournament.

The "Grey Eagle" (as Wren was sometimes called) was a really great recruiter. At one time, as I recall, he ranked third among active coaches with the number of former players in pro ball -- and several of these were in the majors at the same time. When one establishes that kind of reputation it feeds on itself and recruiting becomes easier because you've got that kind of reputation. In my youth I was fortunate to see coaches like Wren, Hess and Snyder. All were OHIO graduates and had national respect in the coaching field in their respective sports.

To add a bit of history to this thread. Back in 1970, the NCAA did have the top teams host the first round of the NCAA tournament. It was not played at neutral sites. Ohio was the host team for our district, but that was the year of the Vietnam War riots and the Ohio students caused the campus to be shut down and school cancelled. Thus the baseball team had to move to Columbus to host the NCAA tournament. The Cats played a practice game at Miller Park in Lancaster before the tournament. This quite possibly might be the only time a future Hall of Farmer ever played in Lancaster.

About the success of Bob Wren, few remember that back then there was a directive to cut the Athletic budget. I don't know where the directive came from, whether it was the AD or higher ups. So where does Ohio do the cutting, they drastically cut the baseball budget, the only program that is prominent nationally. This is when Wren said to heck with it and retired. Then Bobcat baseball went the next 30-40 years very seldom winning the MAC and producing vey few players who went on to the pros.

Don't know a ton about the others, but Wren didn't bring Schmidt to Athens. The architecture program did. Schmidt was initially a walk-on.

Not to deny the greatness of Bob Wren, but that is correct. I recall an interview long ago on the Tim McCarver Show where Schmidt said he wanted to play basketball at Ohio but wasn't allowed because of an injury, then met a bunch of guys on the baseball team playing pick up basketball and they encouraged him to "try out."

Thanks, DXer. That explains the discrepancies between Mike's memory and mine. Mike apparently was remembering that games in an earlier tournament in the 1960s were played in Athens, and I was remembering where the 1970 tournament was actually played. I had forgotten that it had originally been scheduled for Athens. Now that you mention that fact, I do recall that what you state is correct. As I often say, my memory is perfect as I never forget anything, but I sometimes have retrieval problems. ;-)
