Given the topic of dealing with issues of ethnicity in athletics, I thought I'd post these two photos that I took last weekend in Steubenville. This is the front and the back of the gravestone of Moses Fleetwood Walker, who was the first African American to play major league baseball. In 1884 he played as a catcher for the Toledo Blue Stockings of the American Association, at the time the other major league. This was before the American League was formed.

Much better the the Human Kinetics one.

There doesn't seem to any disagreement among anyone that his lifestyle ruined his potential and he did not have a great life after baseball.

No amount of research 100 years after the fact is going to answer anything definitively.

It's absurd for that anyone gets emotionally invested in a debate like that (either FOR or AGAINST the name)

I'd also like to mention Miami's use of the term "Redhawk" offends me. Ohio deserves a rival that knows the difference between real and fake animals.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I guess a mythical bird beats a Red Storm, which strikes me as a particularly virulent menstrual period.

After several racist incidents at high schools around the Cincinnati area and the Chief Wahoo thing there is renewed debate over whether Anderson High School should change their Redskins mascot. The funny thing is that Anderson was originally known as the Comets but their mascot was changed in the 1930s. The accepted origin of the Redskins name is that several Anderson faculty were Miami alumni and wanted the change to honor their alma mater.

Red Hawks don't exist? They helped the Black Hawks decimate the squirrel and rabbit population of my neighborhood. Plus small dogs the size of "Speck" from the Pee Wee Herman movie are in danger.

Pretty sure they exist. (even though the more accurate name is red-tail hawk)

Nice try, but apparently that's a stretch according to this: "Redhawks are birds native to Ohio and to Oklahoma, Little said. An Ohio bird guide lists red-tailed hawks and red-shouldered hawks but not redhawks. No redhawk could be found in a comprehensive bird guide either." "Red Tailed Hawk" would be harder to fit on a basketball jersey and the logo would not be as cool.

My son played football at Stewarts Creek High in TN and guess what their mascot and logo is...

And nobody complained that in reality the tails are (sort of) red and the body sort of grayish. I think the logos look pretty cool.
