Last week,a couple of the local radio stations around here were saying this was coming.
The only question was when.

They said it involved a top personality at NBC.They said they weren't going to give out the person's name, "apologizes to Mrs. Lauer".

The question was whether they would hold off till after Thanksgiving.

Given the Board's policy on rumors I couldn't post it,until it became "official".

Yes I guy here in Athens posted that this morning. It's gotten to the point that you wake up every morning and ask "who's next?" Sexual assault is never ever right but this whole thing seems to be spiraling out of control.

It’s a very delicate thing. I genuinely believe most of these things coming out recently are women who finally feel empowered to speak up, and that’s a good thing. At the same time, there are likely some embellishments for whatever reason. There’s no way to know which is which, though.

In the cases of some of the older ones, I get that it was not seen as big of an issue back then, but it doesn’t justify it either. I don’t know if losing your current job for something unrelated way back when is necessarily a useful consequence, but if not, what would be?

Matt’s unfortunately reads like it’s a slam dunk, detailed account of violating company policy at his current employer.

My view is very similar to this.

I genuinely believe many of these cases are legitimate and I don't respect men who act in this manor. While I genuinely believe many of these stories are legitimate, the fact is I have no way of really knowing. Outside the accuser and the accused, it is impossible for anyone else to know the truth of what did/did not happen.

Assuming you don't have digital recordings of some kind, it becomes he said vs. she said. In these high-profile cases, I likely don't have any personal knowledge of a person's character.

Additionally, verbal and physical abuse are two different things. I'm not condoning either, but lumping each of these stories together under "sexual abuse" doesn't make sense.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Holy Hocking, first it was Roger Ailes and now Matt, two of our most famous (and rich) grads. Who is next: Rufus?
p.s. OU has to take some responsibility for this. They built the golf course to near to his dorm.

I also thought of that today -- two of OU's most prominent figures in journalism (Ailes and Lauer) will forever have their images tarnished. A real damper for J-school grads and the school overall...

Come on, beating up a poison nut is NOT sexual abuse. Buckeyes are asexual. ;-)

Some of the stuff that's come out about Lauer is really bad, especially the fact that he could lock his office door using a button under his desk.

I know that in a lot of these cases, schools have revoked offender's Honorary Degrees.
I believe O.U. worked out an arrangement where Lauer was bot his Bachelors, not an honorary,so I don't think that can be changed.
Does anyone know if his name is on anything at O.U. ?

Wasn't he charged with domestic abuse?

I remember Professor Ray Gusteson telling my Political Science Graduate class in the early 90s about the rise of one of two of his former students (George Voinovich and Roger Ailes.) This was before Fox News and I only vaguely knew the Ailes name because of hearing about his ties to Richard Nixon's 1968 campaign. Dr. Gusteson described them in great detail.

I remember Clarence Page coming to speak to some sort of lecture series, (I think it was my undergrad years in the mid 1980's perhaps?). I knew him because of his appearances on the McLaughlin Group. After the talk, a bunch of chatted with him and if I recall correctly he wanted to have a beer at Tony's so there we were hanging out with him at Tony's for a drink or two. I remember when Matt Lauer made it big. It was a source of pride for all Bobcats. Now within the span of a year two of these mighty names (Ailes and Lauer) have fallen and how, their behavior was just awful. Please God let that be the last.

Interesting reading with lots of background. https://pagesix.com/2017/12/02/matt-lauer-and-his-wife-ha... /

Had wondered about him for years and stopped watching the Today show I was raised on and watched for 4 decades when CBS came on with their new show but it is an interesting article with lots of background ...and info....just not sure I would call it reporting per se

The article talks about Lauer going to the Hamptons on weekends.

There was somewhat of a brouhaha around here a couple of years ago when it came out that, not only was he using a helicopter to go back and forth to the Hamptons, back then they said it was a few times per week, but that NBC was paying for it.

Nope. Now we have this Logan Paul kid who left OU to make a career out of YouTube and is widely disliked for the idiotic decisions he made with his video. It's not been a good run for high-profile former OU students...
