I know Springsteen gets all the love here on BA, but I will take Tom Petty over The Boss any day.

To keep this Athens related, this is always my go-to song at any uptown jukebox.

Heresy,off with his head. :-)

Actually, the feeling out here is that Bruce may be committing career suicide with his Bruce on Broadway Show.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. No need to downgrade the Boss. But agreed that Tom will be sorely missed. A great performer and a great artist.

Really? I haven't heard that perspective. Care to elaborate?

P.S.- This is totally related to OU since Bruce performed at the Convo in April of 1976.

April 1976 he played Mem Aud, not Convo. General Admission as I recall.

Mem Aud as part of Born To Run tour.

One of my older brothers was a frosh on East Green. At the end of a night of beer drinking, he and some friends walked up Jeff Hill around midnight, walked through the front doors at Mem Aud and continued straight up to the stage, standing within a couple feet of the Big Man. I've seen Bruce close to 30 times and I'm still jealous of the one time my brother saw him.

Had a chance to see Petty in London at the Royal Albert Hall in 2012. One of our all time best concert experiences. Ranks right up there with McCartney in Madison Square Garden, Springsteen in the Meadowlands, Santana at Red Rocks and Pink Floyd at Blossom. The folks in England embraced Petty long before we did on this side of the Pond. WMMS in the good old days would be playing him all night long tonight.

Few things about BOB:

1.You could only get tickets by entering a lottery. If you won,you got a code to buy tickets.
The code only allowed you to try.It didn't mean you could get seats,or seats you could afford.

2.Ticket prices are "Hamilton esc."
They were advertised as $75- $850.
Only the last 2 rows of the upper balcony are $75.
After that its $200.
Decent orchestra seats are in the $700-$850 range.
The common term around here is "rich man in a poor man's shirt".

3.The show will be Bruce reading excerpts from his book and playing, based on people who saw his rehearsals,11-12 "standard " songs.
They also say it is VERY dark.
But if you his book, that's not unexpected.

4.Same show every night,so there are concerns he'll get bored.
(Running joke.Bruce did an audible. He read chapter 12 paragraph 6,instead of paragraph 7.)

5.A lot of fans think he's only doing this to get a Tony for "Special theatrical Event".

What I can tell you is that I've seen Bruce over 70 times.
No interest in this.
Same with all but 1 person I know.
If you check out "backstreets.com" there are a number of comments from die hard fans with similar positions.

Of course that could change once the show opens.
The first preview was last night.
Mixed comments from the people there.

I entered that process and while driving through upstate NY on vacation got the text that I was "in." Put in my preferred night (Wednesday before Thanksgiving - plan to be in town to see the 110 in the Macy's parade the next day) and bingo, two tickets in the 13th row center. Price was $750 each. Had to pass. On StubHub, people are now asking a minimum of $2300 for those seats.

Yea, the prices are problematic. Not sure you can do much about that though. If he wants to play a small venue that is going to happen. Not his fault. And he's tried to control the secondary market. The lottery you got into was for regular price tickets. The lottery for the $75 tickets are only a week before each show, that's to try to keep people from putting them up on Stubhub. He also handed out free tickets outside the theater before the first preview show. Every Bruce fan I know is excited about it, but not many will attend I'm sure. That's the nature of the beast. But I find it extremely intriguing and I hope they record one of of the shows and release it on video. I'd pay to watch that.

But to the original point. I don't think it's career suicide. He's huge and will continue to be so. If BOB is a flop no one will remember it in a year. Remember when Bono wrote and produced a Broadway show and it was a total flop? Didn't think so. In the end Bruce will be remembered for the 70s and 80s, not for anything he's doing in 2017.

Couple of things:

1.Again,going only from what I've read,Bruce sets the price.
He decided to charge the same as Broadway musicals.

2.When the first batch of BOB tickets went on sale,Backsreets.com put together a seating chart, based on input they got from people who had gotten tickets.
The chart showed the last 2 rows in the balcony @ $75.00.
So, at least for those shows, you could get $75 seats.
As far as I know, the $75.00 lottery is something like the Book of Mormon does, where they offer a few "good" seats at a lower prices.

3.According to the rumor mill, look for an HBO special like Billy Crystal did for his one man show.

4.As far Bono,I remember "Spider Man Turn Off the Dark".
But,that's a lot different than doing a one man show you wrote, directed and star in.

5.I don't know how huge Bruce is anymore,at least in the states.
The last couple of tours he didn't sell out a number of venues.
Although it did make road trips much more tempting.
Around here, tickets used to be impossible to get.
Starting with the Working On A Dream tour, tickets weren't hard to find.
In fact, for a number of shows,I was able to get tickets, below face.

Except for closing night, you could get tickets for the last few Giant's Stadium/Metlife tour shows up till the day of the show.In fact, there really weren't any "drops".You could walk up to the box office the day of the show and get tickets.

I think the people who want to have seen the "Greatest Hits" shows. That's how he ended The River tour.

Personally,I think that, unless Bruce can put out a really good album, something I don't know if he's still capable of,his popularity is going to go down not up.

Wow, could disagree with you more. Even if we brought up politics ;) Wrecking Ball, in my mind, is the best album of the 21st Century. I'm being a bit hyperbolic, but it is SO GOOD. Rolling Stone agreed, naming it the best album of 2012.

I was surprised to hear that about the Metlife shows, and to be honest I didn't believe it so I looked it up. Every show at Metlife was completely sold out according to Billboard. I went to the show at Lincoln Financial. I had to log on at exactly the moment tickets went on sale to get nosebleeds. It sold out in minutes, as did all the other shows he played in Philly on the tour. According to this New York Daily News article he also sold out the Prudential Center in minutes:

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/music/bruce-spri...

Also according to the LA Times, The River Tour was the top grossing worldwide tour of 2016 pulling in $268.3 million globally and was the highest grossing tour since 2014 for any artist topping Taylor Swift's 2015 tour which grossed $250.1 million. If you're bringing in more than Taylor Swift you're still VERY popular.

1.Wrecking Ball isn't my favorite album.
I have a lot of boots and they have better versions of LOHAD,Wrecking Ball and American Land.

To me,Bruce's last great album was The Rising.

2.Metlife may have "officially" sold out but my wife and got tickets to every show on the last 2 tours there by going to the box office the day of the show.
There were also a lot of empty nose bleed seats. That could have been no shows.

3.Pru sold out fast.
So did the Garden.
But,you're talking about a couple of shows for the entire NY/NJ/Conn area.
Plus, at that time, there was no hint of a stadium tour.

Having to cancel the first Garden show for snow worked out great.
We got to download the Chicago concert for free.

4.No question about Bruce's worldwide grossing.
His shows outside the states sell out like the BITUSA days.
He's just not as popular back home, especially outside of the the 2 coasts and places like Chicago.

5.What remains to be seen is what direction he goes in after BOB.
Last week's NYT article did talk about a new album, but no details.
There was also talk of a follow up Seeger Sessions album/tour.
Just have to wait and see.

6.The other thing that will be interesting is what happens to ticket prices on the secondary market after the show officially opens.

I don't know about his popularity outside the two coasts and Chicago. I just moved back to Cincinnati so I'll weigh in on that after living here for awhile. But the vast majority of that tour revenue came from the U.S. When you're doing an extended stadium tour like he did I don't expect the nosebleeds to be sold out in every stadium. I don't think any artist could do that. Fact of the matter is it was the top grossing tour of 2016 and he sold out a ton of arenas and stadiums all over the country. I think your opinion might be shaded by your dislike of Bruce's politics ;)

I'm personally completely agnostic on this issue, because I know next to nothing about Springsteen. I have not kept up on the music scene since I left college, and I was not that much into it then, either. But, in reading this thread, I get the impression that the same is true of you (Del) and some others here. Your view of Springsteen is colored in a favorable direction because of his politics.

I think your opinion might be shaded by your dislike of Bruce's politics ;)

Politics has nothing to do with my feeling on this.

Like I posted,I've seen Bruce over 70 times.
I go back to the Greetings days.

I've seen at least 1 show, for every tour since BITUSA.
I saw him before that, but not every tour.
Went to all 10 nights at GS and the 3 nights at Shea on The Rising tour
I think that qualifies me as a pretty loyal fan.

I don't know when you first started seeing Bruce, but would venture you don't go back as far.

When you first become a fan of any band, that affects how you look at their music.

He's never kept his political leanings a secret.
Although he did become more vocal about his leanings, starting with BITUSA.

The fact that I disagree with his politics doesn't take away from the fact that I like his music.

That being said, based on my experience the quality of his music and his popularity are far from what they used to be.

No different then most artists.
I remember when YES played to sellouts at the Garden.
Last week they played a theater (NJPAC).

You also can't expect the same energy from someone in his late 60's as when they were in their 30's.
The closest I saw him come to this were the 3 shows at Metlife last year, especially night 3.

You said you like Wrecking Ball, but can that compare to BTR,Darkness,Nebraska or Joad ?

I'm not alone in my opinion.
Check out Backstreets or Greasy Lake.
Those sites are die hard Bruce fans, most of whom share his political views.
You'll see a lot of people feel the same way I do.

Don't get me wrong,if he tours again,I'll go.
But I don't know how many times.

Might want to put away that 8 track player, OCF. Those of us who go back to the WMMS days of Springsteen like his work for what his work is. I'm not a huge lyrics guy - heck, one of my favorite songs is Maggot Brain - but Springsteen's stories much like those of Harry Chapin which is a totally different genre, tell the stories of Americans.

Never had an 8-track tape, Alan.  Had some cassettes and several cassette players.  Before that I had some reel-to-reel tape.  Before tape, it was record players.  Now, I have songs on my iPhone.  Want to to know the genre that I have the most of?  <drum roll>  . . . Civil War music!

Bring the good old bugle, boys, we'll sing another song
Sing it with a spirit that will start the world along
Sing it as we used to sing it, 50,000 strong[N 1]
While we were marching through Georgia.

Chorus
Hurrah! Hurrah! we bring the jubilee![N 2]
Hurrah! Hurrah! the flag that makes you free!
So we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea
While we were marching through Georgia.

Now, there's a song that'll get your toes tapping and bring a smile to your face . . . unless you're steeped in Lost Cause mythology.  smiley

As I said, I know virtually nothing about Springstein.  As my children were growing up they often remarked that their father was the most clueless person they knew when it came to popular culture.  My oldest daughter's friends voted me the most "nerdy Dad."  Second place went to an OHIO professor who specialized in studying slime molds.  My daughter said that it was my ham radio antennas on our roof that put me over the top.  It's an award that I felt honored to receive.  heartyescool

I was just kidding, hence the wink emoticon at the end. You definitely go back further with Bruce than I do, especially since I wasn't born until the late 80s haha. Of course his popularity isn't what it used to be though. That's just logical. I saw Paul McCartney two years ago. It was amazing and it was in front of a huge crowd, but I'm sure he was even better in his prime. Same goes for Bob Dylan, who I saw in June and thoroughly enjoyed. And I wouldn't compare Wrecking Ball to those other albums or any of them to each other. They're all unique and different experiences. Plus, I said WB is the best album of the 21st Century. BTR is probably the best rock album of all time in my opinion.

As our illustrious President would say... WRONG!

I started listening to Bruce when I was in high school. I grew up in a very conservative area and espoused those conservative beliefs until my early 20s when I came to my senses. Even during those dark times I was a huge Bruce fan.

But if you like Marching Through Georgia I present to you my favorite version of it, performed by my second favorite band, Old Crow Medicine Show:

Del, not the first time I’ve been wrong, probably won’t be the last. I accept the correction.

I like that version of MTG. Very lively. It’s one I have on my iPhone, along with about 20 other versions, including one by Acker Bilk in jazz style. The OCMS version has only one negative in my mind: they changed a word in the second verse that destroys authenticity. But overal I really like that version.

Amazing. A thread to honor the life of Tom Petty devolves into a debate about Springsteen, then a discussion about versions of Marching Through Georgia.

Del,some interesting,at least to me,Bruce stuff.

1.I have an old video CD of the first time he played BTR in public.
The lyrics weren't finished, so he hummed some verses

2. I've got a boot of an early version of Thunder Road.
At that time it was titled "Wings for Wheels" and Angelina's,not Mary's,dress waved.

3.Bruce's popularity exploded after the BITUSA release.
He sold out 6 nights at Giants Stadium as fast as they could take the orders.
That was when they used an "open" stage so they sold seats for virtually the entire stadium.

My wife and I couldn't get seats to opening night,so we went to the stadium to try and score seats in the parking lot.
No luck,so the two of us,and about 100 other fans, sat in the parking lot, near the back entrance and listened.Sound was actually pretty good.
When he started the encores, they opened the stadium gates and let us go up to the stage area.

4.The BITUSA GS shows were pre 9/11 so security wasn't too bad.Mostly looking for cameras.
I do a lot of photography.
Using a few of my friends I was able to get a 35mm camera and a "long" telephoto into the stadium.
(Actually tested it out on a football field to determine settings)
Was able to get pictures from the back of the stadium that look like you were in the front row.

5.My all time favorite Bruce concert was Boardwalk Hall in A/C.
It wasn't a concert,it was an event.
All the casinos and restaurants were blasting Bruce onto the boardwalk.
He opened with Atlantic City and it got better from there.
Really weird walking back along the boardwalk, after the show.
