In his latest coaches show, Boals said they are expected to sign a prospect in April. I assume this is Clayton. This puts us one over the scholarship limit but did I miss where we're allowed to do that this year?

So according to this, the NCAA will allow schools to be over the limit for 2021-22. (Essentially Dwight Wilson's scholarship won't count towards the limit.) It's up to the school on whether or not they can afford it. So maybe bringing Clayton in as the ONLY recruit for next year instead of a normal class of 2-5 guys.

https://www.ncsasports.org/coronavirus-sports/ncaa-eligib...

There are two factors that control the availability of scholarships at the D1 and D2 levels. The NCAA scholarship limits per sport and whether or not the school is fully funded. For D1 fall sports, seniors who have scholarships and who will be using the extra year of eligibility will not count against the team’s scholarship limit for the 2021-22 season. The D2 level has not provided any waivers, so there is no potential for D2 programs to offer additional scholarship money for fall sports recruits.

This does not mean a college will go over the limit of maximum scholarships. Each school will decide how many scholarships they can fund for each team depending on their budget. In a recent survey, 80% of college coaches said they do not plan on cutting scholarships as part of their budget cutting measures. For recruits pursuing an athletic scholarship, hopefully this means the maximum, and possibly over the maximum number of scholarships, will be available for the 2021-22 school year.

Here is an example of how this could play out for a college team:

-A fully funded NCAA D1 FBS football team has a maximum of 85 scholarships. All D1 FBS scholarships are full-rides.

-For the 2020-21 season, the team has 25 seniors on scholarship. Let’s say all of these seniors get an extra year of eligibility.

-For the 2021-22 school year, this program could bring back up to 25 seniors and all of those seniors are eligible to keep their scholarships.

-If the school is able to fund the maximum number of scholarships it can for the 2021-22 school year, they could have 110 athletes on scholarships. That means 25 returning seniors and 85 others.

-The determining factor is whether or not a school can afford to give scholarships over the maximum.

Been a long time since I’ve contributed, but dreaming about starting next season is already fun. If I could prioritize the off season agenda, here would be my goals:

1. Keep Boals. I know nobody does this in this profession, but until someone does at OHIO, then there’s little chance of gaining some traction. Commit to 10 years in Athens. Read the book “Good to Great” and difference between the Hedgehog and the Fox, or a passage in the Bible about Contentment. Instead of trying to be the next Lou Henson at Illinois, be the first Jeff Boals at OHIO. I understand the counter argument to this 100%, so it doesn’t need to be explained, but the cycle of you leave as soon as you do well and you stay if you don’t do great, has to end if we’re to build some momentum. Could Boals be the guy as an alumni and somewhat local boy? I’m doubting it, but that would be great as I think he has the “It” factor.

2. Keep Sears. In fact, I believe he’s the top priority and only concern on the transfer portal. IMO, he’s the face of the franchise moving forward and with his youth even more a priority than Preston, though we all want him back. I don’t think any of the other top of the rotation players see greener pastures anywhere else and other than Sears/Preston I don’t see a P5 school trying to poach anyone.

3. As mentioned, in a perfect world, add an athletic big from the JUCO ranks or portal. A rim protector and someone who attacks the rim offensively. Can you just order one online? . Does JB believe he already has this guy on the roster like a Towns? Just seemed like he was more than an off season away and next year is the big opportunity year for this group.

4. A back up plan for DW3 as I’m thrilled to hear he’s back next year, but we need to have someone in development and the back up options not only seemed rough this past year, but JB didn’t seem to trust them much either other than a couple minutes. Does anyone develop, or do we need to restock?

5. And I know this is one that many may disagree with, but I’d like to see us upgrade at the #3 position. I love having a slasher at this position, who also has a midrange game and was a good outside shooter in HS, but it’s an area of opportunity. He’s just a little too little to finish at the rim and the outside shooting just a little too inconsistent. And you saw the last couple weekends that the scouting report was to not let guys like Preston beat them, and that’s why this player led the team in shots at halftime of the Creighton game and tied for the most at the end of the game. In fact, other teams hedged other guys and sacrificed leaving this guy a little more open than others on the game plan. Maybe he develops, maybe there’s someone to share minutes like White whose already on the roster, but this just seemed like a position we’re decent at, but there was real opportunity for growth.

6. And finally, to make all this possible we probably need a couple to transfer out which is double edged if they’re escorted out, which would lead to hurting the chemistry/culture, which seems to be the main reason we may have all/most of the lineup return when they could move on. Be nice if a couple spots would open up to do a little shopping as with potentially Preston, BVP and Wilson in their last year—next year is a big opportunity to maximize. Then again, I’ve mentioned throughout, there are enough bodies on the bench that if a couple would blow up over the off season, maybe these answers are in-house?

Thoughts?

100% Agree with #2. In my own opinion, I think there were points during the season when Sears was better than JP. The reason is simple: he has God-given quickness and acceleration that JP doesn't have. Combined with the fact that he has 3 more years to play (at least, I'm confused on the affect of this year), he's the most important player to keep.

So much so that I would truly look at the idea of playing 4 guards next year more than half the time. Because let's be honest, the best players on the current roster at this moment are, in no specific order:

Sears
Preston
Wilson
Vander Plas
Roderick
McDay

The next best player is Brown. Five of those guys are basically guards. If there are no new additions, that's the best 7 right now. At that point, it's a matter of developing the big guys we have to fill more minutes with productivity. I've seen enough from Towns, Foster, Granger to believe they can make steps forward to be noticeably better.

Fully agree with an upgrade at the 3, though I don't know where that comes from. I said all year to GoCats that the one type of player missing on this team is a player like UB's Williams. A 6'6" to 6'7" player that is capable of shooting the 3, can handle the ball, but can guard basically anyone on the floor -- with the emphasis on guarding. Those guys don't grow on trees though.

Lastly, on your first point, I can't see Boals moving on...yet. It's my hope that he does exactly what you said: becomes that guy for Ohio over a decade or more. Good things will come if that happens. Big IF right now.

The biggest question that remains: Who chooses to test the portal waters, if anyone? I have to believe someone will simply based on the landscape right now.

Granger might have had his best outing of the season vs Creighton -- 9 minutes, 4 pts on 2 for 2 from the field, 2 rebs (both offensive) and only 2 fouls. On the season he averaged 6.1 minutes per game, 1.4 pts, 46% from the field, 1.2 rebs and 1.7 fouls. An interesting stat for him is that on the season he had as many offensive rebs as defensive (13).

We will get by.

Jim Christian was no failure here. He didn't do much at Boston college. He left here cause he got a job that paid way more.one thing he did well was recruit players who had size and strength. Tariq Owens was awesome at Texas tech. Had Jim stayed on so would he. He may well have put up Gary Trent numbers in the mac. Plus jims teams won 20+ games consistently. Would love to see how caris Laverte would've done here.

Tariq Owens would have been a good one for Ohio. He would not have put up Gary Trent numbers. . . never.

Would love to have seen Caris Lavert in the Green and White as well. He was a John Groce recruit.

I remember when we got our asses wiped of the court by Kansas. It was expected both times. 2007 Kansas had six NBA level players including Mario chalmers, Brandon rush , and Darnell Jackson. The other Kansas team had the Morris twins and Brady Morningstar among other top shelf talent. No surprise at the results in either game. It was impressive how jhon groce took the team to sweet sixteen the following year. I do wonder how they would've done against Kansas that year if they had beat north carolina
